JUPITER MEDICAL CENTER RECEIVES $10 MILLION DONATION
The gift will establish the “Elliott Family Center for Cardiac Electrophysiology”
JUPITER, Fla. – May 13, 2024 – Jupiter Medical Center is pleased to announce a $10 million donation to establish the “Elliott Family Center for Cardiac Electrophysiology.” The donation comes from Jupiter-based donors Hugh and Nancy Elliott. The funds will help to expand the not-for-profit hospital’s existing Electrophysiology (EP) Lab from one lab to two and support future growth and expansion needs. Between fiscal year 2022 and 2023, Jupiter Medical Center saw a nearly 40 percent increase in demand for electrophysiology procedures.
During an EP study, highly trained electrophysiologists who specialize in heart arrhythmias use minimally invasive, state-of-the-art equipment to monitor and map the heart’s electrical systems. The studies help physicians understand each patient’s unique arrhythmia, including the cause, where it is originating, how well certain medications are working, and if a patient needs an implantable device like a pacemaker or another procedure to help control their abnormal heart rhythms.
“At Jupiter Medical Center, we are committed to expanding access to the highest quality health care,” said Amit Rastogi, MD, MHCM, President and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “We are grateful to Hugh and Nancy for their donation, which supports our shared vision. Their generous gift will ensure our community will continue to have access to world-class health care where it’s needed – close to home.” JMC’s Elliott Family Center for Cardiac Electrophysiology will be part of the hospital’s award-winning Robson Heart & Vascular Institute, which features an AFib Center of Excellence. Since launching in 2020, the hospital’s heart program has rapidly expanded to meet the growing demand for its services, including a Structural Heart Program.

STATE LAW NAMES TGH BEHAVIORAL HEALTH HOSPITAL ONE OF FIRST BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TEACHING HOSPITALS IN FLORIDA
TGH Behavioral Health Hospital to expand access to world-class care and strengthen health care workforce to meet growing demand.
Tampa, FL May 13, 2024 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and University of South Florida (USF) celebrated today a new state law that names the TGH Behavioral Health Hospital one of the first four behavioral health teaching hospitals in the state of Florida and creates the Florida Center for Behavioral Health Workforce within the University of South Florida’s Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI).
Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, Senator Jim Boyd, who championed the legislation, and Senator Darryl Rouson, who co-sponsored the legislation, joined John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General; Rhea Law, president of USF; Tampa Mayor Jane Castor; Dr. Charles Lockwood, executive vice president of USF Health and dean of the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine; Dr. Ryan Wagoner, chair, USF Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine; Marty Mann, chief development officer, Lifepoint Health; and Kathy Bolmer, chief operating officer, Lifepoint Health; on Monday at the site where the TGH Behavioral Health Hospital is presently under construction. There, they signed their names to a beam that will support the new structure. The TGH Behavioral Health Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as one of the first and only freestanding academic medical behavioral health hospitals in Florida.
“Tampa General is working to transform health care through innovation. Across the nation, there is limited access to behavioral health services and a workforce shortage unable to support the growing need. We turned to our partners at the University of South Florida and in the state Legislature, to address the issue and craft a meaningful solution that not only benefits the patients we treat at Tampa General, but every community across the state of Florida,” said Couris. “Now, with Senate Bill 330 signed into law, the TGH Behavioral Health Hospital is one of the state’s first behavioral health teaching hospitals, where patients needing behavioral health services will have access to academic-based, world-class care. Additionally, medical students and residents will benefit from critical learning alongside Tampa General’s best-in-class providers, extending the reach of our care as they advance their careers in behavioral health.”

STUDY: OLDER ADULTS WITH AGGRESSIVE BLOOD CANCER ARE RESPONSIVE TO TREATMENT AND SHOW PROLONGED SURVIVAL
Standard of care treatment for acute myeloid leukemia extends survival in adults 80 to 90 years old
MIAMI, FLORIDA – MAY 10, 2024 – Standard of care treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is safe and effective for adults over 80, according to a study published in Blood Neoplasia. For roughly a quarter of patients, this treatment can durably prolong survival.
AML is an aggressive and often deadly form of blood cancer that can be difficult to treat. For older adults with AML, the conventional treatment consists of a medication called venetoclax combined with a hypomethylating agent (HMA), also known as VEN-HMA. AML treatment is often intensive and can significantly suppress the immune system and put one at risk of other health complications. As a result, some adults with AML, especially those of advanced older age, may be considered ineligible to receive treatment at all and be recommended to pursue palliative care.
“Our study reveals that a significant portion of these patients at the extremes of older age still derive benefit from the VEN-HMA regimen – which is the standard of care for older AML patients and those who are ineligible to receive intensive chemotherapy,” said Justin Watts, M.D., chief of the Leukemia Section at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and the study’s corresponding author. “While acknowledging it certainly isn’t for everyone, we hope our findings encourage health care providers to thoughtfully explore all treatment avenues for elderly patients with AML, rather than prematurely resorting to HMA alone, best supportive care, or hospice care,” Watts added.

ALARMING RISE OF ELECTRONIC VAPING USE IN U.S. ADOLESCENTS
FAU Study Explores Temporal Trends in Youth Grades Nine to 12
BOCA RATON- (May 13, 2024 – Electronic vapor products (EVPs), also known as e-cigarettes or vaping devices, have an allure because of their marketed image as a safer alternative to traditional cigarette smoking and for their variety of appealing flavors.
Yet, they contain many substances beyond nicotine, including propylene glycol, glycerin, flavorings and potentially harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde and metals, which could pose significant health risks such as respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Vaping also is strongly linked with a serious medical condition that damages the lungs due to the vitamin E acetate, an additive used in tetrahydrocannabinol-containing e-cigarettes.
In 2022, 6% of adults in the U.S. reported current vaping device use. Widespread use by adults has raised concerns about EVP use among adolescents.
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine explored temporal trends in EVP use from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey for ninth through 12th grades among 57,006 subjects from 2015 (earliest available data) to 2021 (most recently available data) from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Results of the study, published online ahead of print in the peer-reviewed Ochsner Journal, show alarming statistically significant and clinically important increases of the daily use of EVPs in U.S. adolescents.
Daily use of EVPs increased from 2% in 2015 to 7.2% in 2019, greater than three-and-one-half times increase. Although the percentage decreased to 5% in 2021, it was still more than a two-and-one-half increase since 2015. The researchers speculate that the effects of COVID-19, which included lockdowns and remote schooling, may have contributed to the decrease in 2021 but cautioned that further research is warranted.
Findings also show that in 2015, the percentage of EVP use was significantly higher in boys (2.8%) than girls (1.1%). By 2021, the percentage of EVP use was higher in girls (5.6%) than boys (4.5%), a one-and-one-quarter increase.

GOOD SAMARITAN MEDICAL CENTER IS ONLY HOSPITAL IN NORTHERN PALM BEACH COUNTY TO OFFER INSPIRE® THERAPY FOR OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA
WEST PALM BEACH, FL—May 13, 2024—Good Samaritan Medical Center (GSMC) is now offering Inspire Therapy, an obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment option for those who cannot use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. GSMC is the only hospital in northern Palm Beach County to offer Inspire. The first procedure was completed by surgeon Dr. Anastasiya Quimby, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon with special fellowship training in head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction.
OSA affects 22 million Americans. When left untreated, OSA can cause vehicle and workplace accidents, worsening mood and memory, stroke, heart attack, and even death. It occurs when the airway collapses during sleep and blocks the flow of oxygen to the brain. The brain senses a lack of oxygen and wakes the body up just long enough to take a breath, then falls back asleep. This cycle repeats throughout the night and causes poor, disruptive sleep.
Inspire works inside the body with a patient’s natural breathing process to treat sleep apnea. Mild stimulation opens the airway during sleep, allowing oxygen to flow naturally. The patient uses a small handheld remote to turn Inspire on before bed and off when they wake up. The safety and efficacy of Inspire was evaluated during the STAR clinical trial. Five-year STAR trial outcomes show patients using Inspire experience significant reductions in sleep apnea events and significant improvements in quality-of-life measures.
