BROWARD HEALTH CELEBRATES $500,000 GIFT TO ENHANCE NEWLY RENAMED BROWARD HEALTH FOUNDATION SIMULATION AND LEARNING CENTER
June 30, 2025- Broward Health celebrated a significant update to its simulation and learning center at Broward Health North that was made possible by a $500,000 gift from the Broward Health Foundation.
Funds were used to upgrade patient simulators known as manikins and technology used to replicate real-world medical scenarios in a controlled, risk-free setting, allowing healthcare professionals to refine their skills, ultimately improving patient care and outcomes. The center is now equipped with three adult, one pediatric and one neonatal manikin.
“We are grateful to our donors whose generous investments in these vital programs strengthen our entire healthcare system, ultimately making a lasting difference in the well-being of our community,” said Don Eachus, president of the Broward Health Foundation.
The Broward Health Foundation Simulation and Learning Center provides targeted training and ongoing education for nurses and healthcare professionals across the entire Broward Health system, including Broward Health’s four regional hospitals, ambulatory clinics and Broward Health Physician Group practices.

ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight: Jorge Quintero
Jorge Quintero lives in South Florida, but his work for The Goodman Group takes him all over the country. Based in Minnesota, The Goodman Group has three sectors: healthcare, residential, and commercial, and Quintero is national vice president of Operations and Business Development for the healthcare sector. Quintero said the company has hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the nation, but he is responsible for two hospitals, and neither is close to home.
“I oversee Bitterroot Hospital in Hamilton, Montana, a very small, 25-bed acute care facility, and the second hospital is Flagstaff Medical Center in Flagstaff, Arizona. It’s the only hospital in Flagstaff so it has 268 beds.” He also oversees seven post acute care facilities, which include rehabilitation centers and skilled nursing facilities. Some of these post acute care facilities are located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, but “otherwise,” Quintero said, “I live in the airport.”
Quintero described his responsibilities for all of the facilities, saying, “I do the day-to-day operations, so I handle processing and quality improvements, and I oversee the facilities and construction.” Included in this is oversight of new investments, renovations, procurement, budget, and cost control, and resource optimization. “I also collaborate with HR regarding talent acquisition, and I oversee customer satisfaction for the entire enterprise.”

Jackson Heart Institute Recognized by Society of Thoracic Surgeons Among Top Cardiac Programs in the Nation
JUNE 30, 2025 – Jackson Heart Institute’s adult heart surgery program has earned the coveted 3-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) and Multi-procedural (overall cardiac surgical performance) across all analyzed Jackson Heart Institute procedures in the STS data-base. This prestigious recognition places Jackson Heart Institute among the top-performing cardiac surgery programs in the nation.
The STS star rating system represents the gold standard for measuring cardiac surgery quality and patient outcomes. Programs that earn three stars demonstrate “better than expected” outcomes based on a comprehensive analysis of patient risk factors and surgical results.
“This recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional cardiac care to our patients and community,” said Hari Mallidi, MD, Jackson’s chief of cardiac surgery and director of Jackson Heart Institute. “Our dedication to clinical excellence, combined with our multidisciplinary team, state-of-the-art facilities, and evidence-based practices has resulted in superior patient outcomes that we’re incredibly proud of.”

Sarcoma Awareness Month: The “Forgotten Cancer”
Palm Beach Gardens man survives deadly, 28-pound tumor found in abdomen. Tampa General surgeon performs nearly nine hours of surgery to remove rare sarcoma tumor.
June 30, 2025 – July is Sarcoma Awareness Month. Known as the “forgotten cancer,” sarcoma is a rare and complex disease that forms tumors in either the bones or soft tissues.
According to the Sarcoma Foundation of America, approximately 17,000 people are diagnosed with sarcoma each year in the United States, about 4,000 with bone sarcomas and 13,000 with soft tissue sarcomas. Currently, more than 50,000 patients and their families are struggling with sarcoma.
Palm Beach Gardens resident Carl Feldman is one of the lucky survivors.
In 2023, Feldman had a 28-pound sarcoma tumor removed from his abdomen by surgeons at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) during a nine-hour surgery. Feldman learned about his massive, beach ball-sized tumor in the fall of 2022 at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Cancer Institute in Palm Beach Gardens. Dr. Vijay Narendran, medical oncologist at the TGH Cancer Institute, confirmed the tumor was liposarcoma, a rare type of malignant soft tissue tumor. Liposarcoma develops in fat tissue and is most often found in the abdominal cavity or extremities.

These lighthearted moments may seem small, but they mean the world to families who can’t be home for holidays and milestones. The festive photos offer a heartwarming reminder that even in the NICU, there’s room for a little fun—and a lot of love.

FORT LAUDERDALE OFFICIALS HOST FIREWORKS SAFETY DEMONSTRATIONS AHEAD OF FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY
July 1, 2025- In preparation for the Fourth of July holiday, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue and Broward Health joined forces to educate the community about the dangers of fireworks. They provided safety tips and discussed common injuries typically seen during the holiday.
“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional display. These are conducted under controlled conditions by trained experts,” Battalion Chief Christopher Davis-Partridge, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said. “The City of Fort Lauderdale throws an annual 4th of July Spectacular at Las Olas Oceanside Park featuring a professional fireworks display.”
“Improper use of fireworks can easily ignite grass, brush, or rooftops, especially during dry conditions. A single firework landing in the wrong place can put homes and lives at risk,” Battalion Chief Davis-Partridge said. “Please avoid using fireworks near buildings, trees, or dry vegetation. Make sure all fireworks are fully extinguished before discarding.”

NCH Rooney Heart Institute Earns Prestigious 3-Star Ratings for Excellence in Cardiac Surgery
July 1, 2025 – The NCH Rooney Heart Institute is proud to announce its outstanding outcomes in cardiac surgery, reaffirming its place among the top cardiovascular programs in the country. The Institute earned three-star ratings – the highest possible denomination – from the prestigious Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) in several major categories, including Isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR), and the new category Multiprocedural Composite Quality Ranking. Only approximately one-quarter of hospitals nationwide received this top designation in the new category.
The cardiac surgery program at NCH performs over 400 cardiac surgical cases a year. For more than 25 years, since the first coronary bypass surgery at NCH in November 1995, the NCH cardiac surgery team has maintained a consistent focus on patient outcomes, data-driven improvement, and clinical excellence. The STS star ratings, which are based on a rolling three-year evaluation, are among the most respected measures in cardiac surgery and position NCH in the highest performing quartile for heart surgery with exceptionally lower rates of 30-day morbidity and mortality, and favorable observed-to-expected (O/E) outcome ratios across the board. With this year’s recognition, the Rooney Heart Institute has now received three stars for isolated CABG for over a decade.

Breast cancer risk in younger women may be influenced by hormone therapy
NIH study could help to guide clinical recommendations for hormone therapy use among women under 55 years old.
June 30 2025 – Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have found that two common types of hormone therapy may alter breast cancer risk in women before age 55. Researchers discovered that women treated with unopposed estrogen hormone therapy (E-HT) were less likely to develop the disease than those who did not use hormone therapy. They also found that women treated with estrogen plus progestin hormone therapy (EP-HT) were more likely to develop breast cancer than women who did not use hormone therapy. Together, these results could help to guide clinical recommendations for hormone therapy use among younger women.
