“We are thrilled to bring the single-port robot to Broward Health Medical Center,” said Ryan H. The single-port robotic system is the latest iteration of robotic technology that allows surgeons across multiple specialties to perform complex procedures with more camera visibility, precision and maneuverability through a single incision. Benefits of using the robot can include rapid recovery, reduced scarring, and improved quality outcomes for patients.

JUPITER MEDICAL CENTER FIRST IN PALM BEACH COUNTY TO OFFER PASCAL PRECISION SYSTEM

Groundbreaking FDA-approved technology allows cardiologists to offer alternative treatment for patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation (DMR)

May 25, 2023 – The leader in quality, safety and patient experience, Jupiter Medical Center is pleased to announce it is the first in Palm Beach County to introduce the PASCAL Precision Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair System, an alternative life-saving therapy for patients with severe degenerative mitral regurgitation (DMR). The innovative technology, approved by the FDA in late 2022, provides surgeons with enhanced precision in transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) cases.

Augusto Villa, MD, FACC, FSCAI, is medical director of the Structural Heart Program at Jupiter Medical Center. He successfully performed the procedure on a patient at Jupiter Medical Center in late March.

“This is an exceptional addition to our full continuum of cardiac care at Jupiter Medical Center,” said Dr. Villa, a board-certified and fellowship-trained Interventional cardiologist with extensive experience in cardiovascular diseases, interventional and structural cardiology. “For patients too high-risk for open heart surgery, which would typically be the conventional way to repair a mitral valve leakage, the PASCAL is minimally invasive and provides an excellent outcome.”

ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD LEUKEMIA PATIENT RINGS BELL CELEBRATING CANCER-FREE DIAGNOSIS FOLLOWING CLINICAL TRIAL

May 25. 2023 -Following two and a half years of treatment for leukemia, the day Avinash “Avi” Ghirow, 11, had long been waiting for finally arrived in March, when he rang the bell to celebrate the end of his chemotherapy treatments. It is a celebration that may not have been possible if Avi had not been enrolled in a clinical trial recommended by doctors at Broward Health.

“This was an incredibly happy day for Avi,” said Hector Rodriguez-Cortes, M.D., the pediatric hematologist-oncologist who treated Avi at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. “He cried because he knew the magnitude of this outcome, and we were all so happy for him, we cried too.”

Avi’s symptoms could easily have been overlooked as the flu or a multitude of other minor ailments. His family first took him to a pediatrician because he was pale, lethargic, coughing and not drinking much. The pediatrician suggested taking Avi to a local emergency department for further evaluation. He was then transferred to Broward Health Medical Center where bloodwork revealed that his complete blood count was abnormal, eventually leading to a diagnosis of leukemia.

When Avi was diagnosed in December of 2020, his medical team, led by Dr. Rodriguez-Cortes, presented all treatment options to his parents, including a clinical trial,  Protocol AALL1731.

The Lasher Family Research Acceleration program will fund cutting-edge research and education within the hospital.

May 24, 2023 – Tampa General Hospital today announced a generous gift from the Lasher family of Tampa, Florida, to support the TGH Foundation and infectious disease research programs. This is a collaboration between Tampa General Hospital and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

The Lasher Family Research Acceleration program will fund cutting-edge research and education concentrating on advanced treatments and critical care for patients suffering with infectious diseases like COVID-19.

Tampa General Hospital  is committed to becoming a recognized global leader on the forefront of infectious disease clinical care, research, and education under the direction of Drs. John Sinnott and Kami Kim. MIAMI CANCER INSTITUTE AND MIAMI CARDIAC & VASCULAR INSTITUTE, PART OF BAPTIST HEALTH SOUTH FLORIDA, TREAT FIRST LIVER CANCER PATIENT IN THE COUNTRY WITH NEW ROBOT FOR INOPERABLE TUMORS

May 25, 2023 – Miami Cancer Institute and Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, a part of Baptist Health South Florida, are the first in the United States to successfully treat a patient with liver tumors by using the Quantum Surgical’s Epione® robot to perform a CAT scan guided microwave ablation. The procedure was performed under the guidance and care of Govindarajan Narayanan, M.D., chief of interventional oncology at Miami Cancer Institute and a vascular interventional radiologist with Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute.

The Epione® robot allows physicians to treat inoperable tumors precisely, at an early stage, in locations that are difficult to reach, due to their size or their location. This technology is designed to target and perform percutaneous tumor ablations, a minimally invasive treatment in which one or more needles are inserted using imaging guidance, through the skin and into the tumor to destroy it.

“I am honored to be the first physician to utilize this technology in the United States as this robotic-assisted equipment is going to change the way we deliver effective treatments to our patients for cancerous tumors,” said Dr. Narayanan. “Baptist Health has always been at the forefront when it comes to providing the very best care to the South Florida community and beyond. I am proud to be a part of such an incredible team.”

Miami Cancer Institute and Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute offer patients access to new technologies years before other regional hospitals. The team of multidisciplinary physicians represents the complete spectrum of cardiovascular and oncologic care and is dedicated to providing families with the best treatment.

PRADO NAMED INTERIM PROVOST AND EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

May 26, 2023 – The double ’Cane, who holds key academy and leadership positions at the University, will begin his new role on July 1.
Guillermo “Willy” Prado is so passionate about the process of creating new knowledge that he had his personalized University of Miami license plate inscribed with the letters RSRCH—a truncated version of the word “research.”

“Submitting a grant, executing a study, devoting the time and effort it takes to do a systematic investigation that yields new concepts—that has always fascinated me,” said Prado, dean of the Graduate School, vice provost for faculty affairs, and professor of nursing and health studies, public health sciences, and psychology.

Indeed, that passion has resulted in Prado, a recognized researcher on adolescent health and prevention, having his work appear in more than 190 peer-reviewed articles and serving as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or mentor on more than $100 million in National Institutes of Health funding.

Now, he will apply the same passion he has for research to his new role as the University’s interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.

FROM LIFT OFF TO SPLASH DOWN: AN UPDATE ON MAYO CLINIC STEM CELLS IN SPACE

It’s been six years since Mayo Clinic physician Abba Zubair, M.D., Ph.D., watched stem cells from his regenerative medicine laboratory blast into space as part of a research effort to see if zero gravity would help the cells multiply faster.

May 26, 2023  – Approximately 15 million people worldwide experience a stroke annually, according to the World Health Organization. Currently, stroke remains a top cause of death and disability in the world.

Finding new therapies for stroke is important to Abba Zubair, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic physician and scientist whose mother was stricken by a stroke when he was younger. As a regenerative medicine specialist, Dr. Zubair is focused on using adult stem cells — known as mesenchymal stem cells —and their use in future treatments for stroke.

Growing up in Nigeria, Dr. Zubair had high ambitions, including dreams of becoming an astronaut. Though he has not taken flight, his work has – literally. In 2017, several samples of donated stem cells from Dr. Zubair’s lab were on a rocket launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The goal was to find out if the cells could hold up in space and be more quickly mass-produced in microgravity for use in stroke treatment.

LARGE STUDY PROVIDES SCIENTISTS WITH DEEPER INSIGHT INTO LONG COVID SYMPTOMS

May 25, 2023 – NIH-funded research effort identifies most common symptoms, potential subgroups, and initial symptom-based scoring system – with aim of improving future diagnostics and treatment.

Initial findings from a study of nearly 10,000 Americans, many of whom had COVID-19, have uncovered new details about long COVID, the post-infection set of conditions that can affect nearly every tissue and organ in the body. Clinical symptoms can vary and include fatigue, brain fog, and dizziness, and last for months or years after a person has COVID-19. The research team, funded by the National Institutes of Health, also found that long COVID was more common and severe in study participants infected before the 2021 Omicron variant.
The study, published in JAMA(link is external), is coordinated through the NIH’s Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER)(link is external) initiative, a nationwide effort dedicated to understanding why some people develop long-term symptoms following COVID-19, and most importantly, how to detect, treat, and prevent long COVID. The researchers hope this study is the next step toward potential treatments for long COVID, which affects the health and wellbeing of millions of Americans.

“Americans living with long COVID want to understand what is happening with their bodies,” said ADM Rachel L. Levine, M.D., Assistant Secretary for Health. “RECOVER, as part of a broader government response, in collaboration with academia, industry, public health institutions, advocacy organizations and patients, is making great strides toward improving our understanding of long COVID and its associated conditions.”
