JUPITER MEDICAL CENTER RECEIVES FINAL APPROVAL FOR NEW 92-BED PATIENT TOWER Target completion date for the $110 million project is May 2025
April 21, 2023– Jupiter Medical Center has received final approval from the Town of Jupiter for a new five-story, 92-bed patient tower. The building is a $110 million project and will add to the hospital’s existing 248-bed capacity. In addition to the tower, the medical center is also approved to build a five-deck garage with 800 parking spaces, a project estimated to cost approximately $25 million. Both projects come amid significant expansions and renovations to the independent, not-for-profit medical center’s main campus at 1210 S. Old Dixie Highway in the heart of Jupiter.
The new patient tower will increase the hospital’s capacity for inpatient care, including oncology, cardiovascular, and orthopedics. The patient tower and the parking garage have a target completion date of May 2025.
“Jupiter Medical Center is currently undergoing the most transformative period in our 44-year history,” said Amit Rastogi, MD, MHCM, President and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “We have several expansion projects underway to ensure our community continues to have access to the highest quality health care and best patient experience for generations to come – and right where they need it, close to home.”

| MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM INVESTS IN ITS COMMUNITY’S FUTURE Land Purchase Paves Way for Significant Possibilities on Iconic Hollywood Corner
April 21, 2023 – Memorial Healthcare System, which has been providing care to Hollywood and South Florida communities for 70 years, has purchased two parcels of land at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and State Road 7. Previously part of the footprint of the Hollywood Fashion Center, the parcels are approximately eight acres and nearly 360,000 square feet on a high-traffic intersection just east of the Florida Turnpike.
Memorial will convene a work group and consult with internal and external stakeholder audiences to determine the optimal use for the property, but preliminary conversations have focused on a health and wellness hub that would serve the community. “We’re committed to increasing access for a growing population to the high-quality facilities and services residents have come to expect from us,” said K. Scott Wester, president and CEO of Memorial Healthcare System. “While we’ll certainly be creative in our approach to what is ultimately offered, keeping individuals and communities healthy is always our main mission.”
The Memorial property is part of the ongoing revitalization of the 441 corridor and seen as a gateway to Hollywood from the west. There is currently a 155,000 square foot building and an adjacent parking lot on the site.

The annual $40,000 grant from VITAS Healthcare provides tuition assistance to four students pursuing a licensed practical nursing (LPN) degree each year.
“VITAS is committed to the future of nursing, and we are honored to provide opportunities to those in the Miami-Dade community who have a passion for hospice care,” said Betty Bel, vice president of operations for VITAS in South Florida and a Miami Dade College alumna. “It is a privilege to support talented, aspiring nurses with tuition assistance for their education and equip them with tools to advance in an industry that ultimately strengthens our entire community.”
The scholarships will be awarded to two recipients each spring and fall semester, totaling four per calendar year. Eligible nursing students who apply for the financial aid will submit a hospice-related short essay and commit to two years of employment with VITAS.
VITAS leaders presented the $40,000 check to the Miami Dade College Foundation, accepted by Foundation CEO Nelson Hincapie and COO Julie Vives, along with Tommie Norris, DNS, RN, dean of nursing; Dr. Bryan Stewart, president of the medical campus; and Kayla Mathis Campbell, chair of the LPN program.

COMMUNITY SUPPORTERS RAISE $3 MILLION FOR CANCER RESEARCH
Fundraising total is double last year’s amount for Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute
MIAMI, FL – April 20, 2023 – More than 1,600 participants spent Sunday, March 12, walking and dribbling basketballs while raising money to fund innovative cancer research during the third annual Bounce Back from CancerTM, a partnership between Baptist Health Foundation and the Miami HEAT.
Miami Heat team captain Udonis Haslem led the Miami HEAT’s effort and served as the event’s celebrity ambassador and social media influencer for the second straight year. UD was at the Kaseya Center to celebrate with the dedicated cancer fighters, a quarter of whom walked and dribbled 14 miles from Miami Cancer Institute on Kendall Drive.Bounce Back 2023 Post-Event Image
Bounce Back from Cancer brought together cancer survivors and their supporters, leaders and staff from the Miami HEAT and Miami Cancer Institute, sports fans and community members to help fulfill the Institute’s vision of a world without cancer.
“This year’s Bounce Back from Cancer was an incredible success,” said Richard Berkowitz, JD, CPA, event chair and founding and executive chairman of Berkowitz Pollack Brant Advisors + CPAs. “This groundswell of support for Miami Cancer Institute from survivors, their families and friends allowed us to double the participants and funds raised over last year.
Michael Zinner, MD, CEO and executive medical director of Miami Cancer Institute, added, “The funds raised through this event are furthering our work and enabling us to conduct clinical trials that lead the nation in groundbreaking cancer therapies.”
EVP and chief commercial officer for The HEAT Group, John Vidalin, added, “The entire Miami HEAT organization is once again proud to partner with Baptist Health Foundation for this extraordinary cause. HCA FLORIDA BRANDON HOSPITAL NOW OFFERING ROBOTIC ASSISTED TECHNOLOGY FOR LUNG CANCER HCA Florida Brandon Hospital now offering robotic assisted technology for lung cancer April 20, 2023 – HCA Florida Brandon Hospital has performed its first robotic-assisted navigational bronchoscopy for lung biopsy. The new technology improves accuracy and precision of lung cancer biopsy, enabling physicians the ability to diagnose and treat lung cancer earlier than ever.
“According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women and is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States,” said Tripp Owings, chief executive officer at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital. “We are proud to offer this new robotic technology to our patients in an effort to combat lung cancer and help Floridians live a longer, healthier life.”
The robot features an ultra-thin, easily maneuverable catheter that can move 180 degrees in all directions, allowing doctors to navigate through small and tortuous airways to reach nodules in any airway segment within the lung. The system’s flexible biopsy needle can also pass through very tight bends via the catheter to collect tissue in the peripheral lung, enabling a more precise biopsy and easier surgical experience for patients.
Most lung nodules are small and harmless. But over time, some nodules can grow and even become cancerous. Suspicious nodules larger than eight millimeters may need to be biopsied. Previously, there were several options for testing a lung nodule, including with a needle inserted into the lungs, with a camera placed in the mouth (traditional CT-guided bronchoscopy) or with chest surgery. But nodules at the outer edges of the lungs are hard to reach with these older methods. With robotic bronchoscopy, a highly maneuverable robotic arm is able to get to these distant areas.

“BROWARD HEALTH GAVE ME HOPE AND A CHANCE AT A NEW LIFE” APRIL 19, 2023 – Hyvelle Ferguson-Davis had a slight headache when she was at work one day in January 2014. As the pain grew stronger, she started having blurred vision, so she decided to head home.
The mother of two did not think much of her headache. “I took an aspirin and laid down for a nap,” Ferguson-Davis said.
Unbeknownst to her, she was having a stroke.
After her nap, her daughter noticed she was slurring her speech and called 911. The paramedics suggested that she should go to the hospital because her blood pressure was high, but the busy mom refused.
“I had a schedule and responsibilities. Back then I used to take care of everyone but myself,” Ferguson-Davis recalled. Shortly after Ferguson-Davis’ foot went numb and her arm started caving in, her husband rushed her to Broward Health Coral Springs where she learned she was having a stroke.
Our multidisciplinary team successfully treated the slow bleed and sent her to the rehabilitation center at Broward Health North for three weeks.

AMERICANS ARE THINKING ABOUT END-OF-LIFE CARE BUT FALL SHORT OF MAKING NECESSARY PLANS, ESPECIALLY PEOPLE OF COLOR Americans Are Thinking About End-of-Life Care But Fall Short of Making Necessary Plans, Especially People of Color
For Black, Hispanic and Asian Americans, uncertainty about where to find information is a factor.
April 12, 2023 – In its annual survey of attitudes about end-of-life care and planning, VITAS® Healthcare found that Americans’ words and actions are not aligned when it comes to advance care planning. Although more than half of Americans say they know the type of medical treatment they want to receive at their end of life, only about one in four (22%) have formally documented their wishes. These discrepancies, which are even more stark for people of color, highlight a gap in American awareness and education on advance care planning.
In its annual Advance Care Planning Report, VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of hospice and palliative care, details Americans’ attitudes and opinions on planning for end of life, as well as insights among different generations and racial groups on the topic. The findings come from a nationwide study commissioned by VITAS and issued in conjunction with National Healthcare Decisions Day (April 16).
“Advance care planning is something that can benefit all people. Unfortunately, there is a gap between thinking about end-of-life planning and actually documenting those wishes,” said Dr. Joseph Shega, VITAS executive vice president and chief medical officer. “I can’t stress enough how valuable advance care planning is for all Americans. It allows patients to make their preferences known early and is useful as they become seriously ill and enter advanced disease stages. Knowing a patient’s wishes for end of life ensures care aligns with their goals and values. It also relieves the burden on families to make critical medical decisions on behalf of their loved ones.”

CLEVELAND CLINIC-LED STUDY SUGGESTS MORE PATIENTS WITH COMMUNITY-ACQUIRED PNEUMONIA COULD BE SWITCHED FROM IV TO ORAL ANTIBIOTICS EARLIER Cleveland Clinic-Led Study Suggests More Patients with Community-Acquired Pneumonia Could Be Switched from IV to Oral Antibiotics Earlier
Earlier switching was associated with shorter duration of antibiotics and hospital stay April 21, 2023 – Findings from a Cleveland Clinic-led study showed for patients with community-acquired pneumonia treated with intravenous (IV) antibiotics, earlier switching to oral antibiotics in clinically stable patients was associated with shorter duration of antibiotics and hospital stay.
The results from this retrospective study, led by Abhishek Deshpande, M.D., Ph.D., a staff physician investigator in the Center for Value-Based Care Research and Michael B. Rothberg, M.D., vice chair of research, Cleveland Clinic Community Care, were recently published in Clinical Infectious Diseases.
Current clinical practice guidelines from the American Thoracic Society/Infectious Diseases Society of America recommend switching from IV to oral antibiotics once patients are clinically stable, which is typically after three days of IV therapy. Early switching in stable patients appears safe but data showed it occurred infrequently in patients with community-acquired pneumonia.
