FIU disaster field exercise trains future responders for complex crises at home and abroad

This year’s simulation explores how disaster response lessons could apply to Cuba during a future transition environment
May 14, 2026 – Florida International University kicked off its annual Disaster Field Operations Exercise today at the Biscayne Bay Campus, bringing together graduate students, emergency responders and community partners for a full-scale simulation focused on disaster response in domestic and international environments.
Led by FIU’s Academy for International Disaster Preparedness, part of the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, the two-day exercise gives approximately 50 students the opportunity to move from classroom theory to field operations. They were joined by 50 volunteers and representatives from over 25 participating agencies and organizations.
“Disasters are unpredictable, and emergency managers must be ready to respond wherever their expertise is needed,” said Javier I. Marques, senior vice president, chief of staff and executive director for FIU’s Academy for International Disaster Preparedness.
Students are being tested on their ability to assess needs, coordinate resources, manage logistics and support response and recovery efforts. On Thursday, students responded to a simulated disaster in the United States. On Friday, the exercise shifts to an international scenario involving a major hurricane striking Cuba, a situation that could have implications for disaster response teams supporting the island during a theoretical period of government transition.
“For South Florida, Cuba is not an abstract international scenario. It is a neighboring island with deep cultural, family and humanitarian ties to our region,” said Dulce M. Suarez, assistant director of FIU’s Academy for International Disaster Preparedness.

Broward Children’s Center Introduces Animal-Assisted Therapy Program with Certified Therapy Dog
May 13, 2026 – Broward Children’s Center (BCC) – a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving infants, children and young adults who are developmentally disabled and medically fragile and their families – is proud to continue its commitment to delivering the highest quality of care to medically fragile children and has launched a new animal-assisted therapy program at its Children’s Comprehensive Care Center (CompCare). The Animal-assisted Therapy program is anchored by Wrigley, a one-year-old Boston Terrier certified therapy dog and marks a new chapter in the facility’s approach to whole-child care at the only freestanding sub-acute pediatric skilled nursing facility in the Southeast United States.
CompCare, located in Pompano Beach, is a 36-bed, freestanding, pediatric skilled nursing facility that serves children and young adults from birth to 21 years old who have medically complex conditions and are medically stable. The newly renovated 15-bed nursery serves newborns to eight-year-olds.

Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute and Lakeland Regional Health Hollis Cancer Center Expand their Academic Cancer Care Network With Addition of Three Advanced Oncology Specialists
Medical oncologists bring unique expertise in complex blood cancers and solid malignancies to Central Florida.
May 12, 2026 – The partnership announced in January between Lakeland Regional Health (LRH) and the Tampa General Hospital (TGH) academic health system has taken its next step in developing a cancer care network serving Central Florida by adding medical oncology subspecialists to the Hollis Cancer Center in Lakeland.
Led by Dr. Ankit Kansagra, medical oncologist and associate vice president of Oncology Integration & Community Alignment, TGH Cancer Institute, the team comprises Dr. David Swoboda, clinical director of Leukemia, TGH Cancer Institute, and Dr. Noman Ashraf, director, Medical Oncology, TGH Cancer Institute. The team of experienced medical oncologists will work together to expand highly specialized cancer care, strengthen research collaboration and broaden access to clinical trials across the region.

30-Year-Old Survives a Near-Fatal Stroke and Heads Back to Traveling the World
The Sound of Life Restored
At just 30 years old, Diana Hurtado never imagined she would suffer a stroke.
In August 2025, she experienced minor pain on the right side of her head while driving for Uber—something she brushed off as stress, fatigue or even a dental issue.
But everything changed in an instant. Diana suddenly lost all sensation in her left arm.
Still, she tried to rationalize it, blaming exhaustion or her prior injuries. She parked at a nearby store to rest, hoping the feeling would pass. But within minutes her condition worsened. She called her chiropractor, who attributed the tingling and numbness to a herniated disc she had been treating and advised her to go home and rest.
But soon her headache became unbearable, the left side of her face began to droop and her speech became slurred. That’s when she looked up her symptoms online and saw a message that likely saved her life: you are having a stroke; call 911.
“At that point I couldn’t feel my fingers anymore,” said Diana. “I actually had to use Siri to make the call.”

The Lymphoma Research Foundation’s Third Annual South Florida Golf Invitational Raised Over $575,000 to Power Breakthroughs in Research to Cure Blood Cancers
May 12, 2026 – The Lymphoma Research Foundation invited the community to tee up for a better tomorrow at the Third Annual South Florida Golf Invitational on Monday, May 4, 2026. Supporters putted for a purpose at the iconic La Gorce Country Club, one of the most exclusive private golf clubs in the United States, designed by Jack Nicklaus, while being a catalyst in finding cures. The exclusive tournament highlighted the Foundation’s strong donor base with a unique, intimate experience for the 72 participants.
The event raised $575,000 to support the Lymphoma Research Foundation’s mission to realize the promise of science to eradicate lymphoma and serve the community touched by this disease. Proceeds will power breakthroughs in research that cure blood cancers and directly support cancer patients in need. Lymphoma is the most common blood cancer in adults and the third most common cancer overall among children. The Lymphoma Research Foundation is the nation’s largest nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to funding lymphoma research and supporting the lymphoma community through evidence-based education, support services and resources.

May 12, 2026 – HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital today announced the opening of a new 667‑space parking garage on its campus, a transformative investment to improve access and convenience for patients, visitors and caregivers.
The $36 million project significantly expands on-campus parking capacity, freeing up spaces across existing parking areas allowing patients and their families to more easily access care and connect with the hospital’s award-winning clinical teams. Sarasota Memorial Health Care System Achieves New Milestone with Two 5-Star Hospitals
May 13, 2026 – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System reached an important milestone today — both its Sarasota and Venice hospitals earned the highest 5-Star quality rating from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
In today’s update to the CMS Care Compare website – a federal tool that helps patients evaluate quality and safety in more than 4,000 hospitals nationwide – Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota earned a 5-Star rating for the 11th consecutive year, while Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice improved from four stars to its first 5-Star rating since opening in 2021. The community-owned health system boasts the only 5-Star hospitals in the four-county Suncoast region, and its flagship SMH-Sarasota campus remains the only hospital in Florida, and among just 12 in the nation, to maintain a perfect 5-Star rating every year since the ratings began in 2016.
The addition of SMH-Venice to the 5-Star ranks highlights the health system’s ability to replicate a culture of excellence and patient-centered care across campuses, said Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder.

Low Health Literacy Adds up to $238 Billion in Annual Health Care Costs
May 15, 2026 – For many health care consumers, understanding how health care and health insurance benefits work feels like learning a foreign language. Nearly 9 out of 10 adults struggle to understand basic terms about health care and health insurance, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).1
The World Health Organization estimates that this “language barrier” can cost American adults between $143 to $7,798 more per year on health care,2 totaling up to $238 billion in unnecessary costs annually.3 It also can lead to skipped preventive care and unnecessary hospital stays, the CDC report states.

Novel CAR T cell therapy developed by UT MD Anderson researchers moves into clinical studies
May 15, 2026 - The novel therapy targets CD94+ relapsed or refractory T/NK cell lymphomas
UT MD Anderson received Investigational New Drug clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to begin Phase 1 clinical trial
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and CTMC, a joint venture between UT MD Anderson and Resilience, today announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a ‘safe to proceed’ for the Investigational New Drug (IND) application for a novel chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy.
The cell therapy, developed in the laboratory of Sattva Neelapu, M.D., professor of Lymphoma & Myeloma at UT MD Anderson, will enter a Phase 1 clinical trial for patients with relapsed or refractory CD94+ T/NK cell lymphomas. CTMC will manufacture the therapy for the trial, which Neelapu will lead.

CMS Announces Early Adopters to Advance Solutions for Electronic Prior Authorization, Accelerating Momentum Ahead of 2027 Requirements
May 13, 2026- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), through its Health Tech Ecosystem, is advancing its electronic prior authorization efforts through a newly established Electronic Prior Authorization Acceleration initiative to address key challenges and drive solutions ahead of 2027 requirements.

Two Lee Health Acute Care Hospitals Have Earned Five Stars in the Annual CMS Quality Star Ratings
May 13, 2026 — Patient safety and high-quality care remain top priorities for Lee Health, and the health system is pleased to announce that two of its adult acute care hospitals have earned five-star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the highest distinction in the agency’s annual hospital rating system.
HealthPark Medical Center and Lee Memorial Hospital both improved their ratings from four stars to five stars. Gulf Coast Medical Center maintained its four-star rating, while Cape Coral Hospital received a three-star rating. Children’s hospitals are not included in the CMS rating system.

Lee Health Expands Pediatric and Family Care with New Surgery Center Opening in 2028
May 13, 2026 — Lee Health proudly announces the start of construction on its new Pediatric Surgery Center and Family Medicine Clinic, expected to open in early 2028.
The facility will provide specialized, high-quality care to patients and families throughout Southwest Florida. Spanning 60,000 square feet across two stories, it will be located adjacent to the Golisano Children’s Hospital and HealthPark Medical Center campus.
The first floor will include four pediatric surgery operating rooms and two endoscopy suites. The second story will include space for a Family Medicine Residency clinic to support the training of future Lee Health physicians, as well as a dedicated area for pediatric-focused care and family medicine services.

NIH-supported project expands access to care for children with amblyopia
May 15, 2026 – A group of pediatric eye disease researchers supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched an open-access tool designed to help manage pediatric cases of amblyopia, a condition in which the brain fails to properly develop normal vision in one or both eyes early in life. It is the leading cause of preventable single-eye (monocular) vision loss, affecting three of every 100 children in the nation. The tool is aimed at expanding access to evidence-based amblyopia clinical-decision-making expertise amidst a shortage of pediatric eye care specialists in the United States.

Researchers identify first suite of human antibodies against measles virus
NIH-funded study lays foundation for antibody-based measles treatment.
May 14, 2026 – A scientific team funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has isolated and mapped in detail the first comprehensive group of human antibodies targeting the measles virus. The findings reveal previously unknown details about how the human immune system fights measles and identify specific antibodies capable of reducing the virus to undetectable levels in an animal model. The research could serve as the foundation for development of a measles treatment.
Measles cases have recently increased in the United States and worldwide. More than 470,000 measles cases were reported globally in 2024, and at least 72 outbreaks have been recorded in the United States since January 2025. While effective prevention in the form of vaccination is available, no safe and effective therapies have received regulatory approval in the United States. This leaves people who cannot safely receive the vaccine – the immunocompromised, pregnant women, and infants too young to be vaccinated – with a lack of medical options.

May 12, 2026 – A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded study has identified key differences in human pancreatic islet cells that may help explain why some people are more likely to develop diabetes. Researchers found that the mix of hormone-producing cells in the pancreas varies widely from person to person, and that variation plays a central role in how the body regulates blood sugar.
