A CHILDHOOD CANCER SURVIVOR FINDS HER CALLING IN PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGY-ONCOLOGY NURSING

September 22, 2023 – Although Dana Tabib’s cancer diagnosis at age seven drastically altered her childhood and challenged her family, it has made her a more compassionate and insightful nurse – and a walking reminder of the resilience and hope of survivorship.

As a nurse manager in pediatric hematology-oncology at Broward Health Medical Center, Dana has devoted her nursing career to helping children facing cancer and other blood disorders, such as sickle cell anemia.

“I wanted to go into nursing so that when I was at work, I would think to myself, ‘I was in that bed,’” Dana said. “Because I was a patient for so long, I knew I could relate to our patients and help make a difference.”

Dana was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), one of the deadliest blood cancers according to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in April 1979. After undergoing initial treatment near her home in Indianapolis, Dana got a grim prognosis and learned a bone marrow transplant was her only option.

“Doctors told my mom that there were no other treatments available, and if we stayed in Indianapolis, I would pass away,” said Dana, adding that there were no clinical trials. “Even with the bone marrow transplant, they told us that I had only a 13 percent chance of survival.”

FAU RECEIVES $1.3 MILLION GRANT FOR ALZHEIMER’S OUTREACH IN BROWARD COUNTY

Nursing Project Will Provide Dementia Support and Services to Broward’s Underserved Communities

September 20, 2023 – Florida Atlantic University’s María de los Ángeles Ortega, DNP, APRN, in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, has been awarded a three-year, $1.3 million grant from the Administration for Community Living’s (ACL) Alzheimer’s Disease Program Initiative for a groundbreaking project designed to advance health equity and improve quality of life for individuals living with or at high risk for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) and their family caregivers.

ACL was created around the fundamental principle that all people, regardless of age or disability, should be able to live independently and participate fully in their communities.

FAU’s project, “Connecting Communities to Caring-Based Dementia-Specific Services and Supports,” is designed to link historically underserved and marginalized communities in Broward County with specialized dementia services and supports. In addition, this initiative also aims to improve dementia capability for service provision to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are living with dementia as well as their families.

According to ACL, many older adults and people with disabilities need help with the daily tasks of life or require physical assistance such as help with dressing and eating. For others, it is help with making decisions and planning. Still, others require a blend of supports. Each person is unique, and the help they may need is unique as well.

SYLVESTER RESEARCH: SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS LINKED WITH OUTCOMES AND SURVIVAL IN PATIENTS TREATED FOR NON-SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER

“We believe our social determinants of health scoring system is the first to provide a composite perspective on many of the nonmedical factors that affect outcomes in patients receiving treatment for non-small cell lung cancer,” said Dao Nguyen, M.D., Sylvester Thoracic Cancers Group co-leader. Photo by Sylvester

Newly developed scoring system provides composite view reflecting income, education, geographical location, access to specialized care, race and other factors

September 22, 2023 – Researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine found an association between “social determinants of health” and outcomes and survival in patients undergoing surgery and treatment for non-small cell lung cancer.

The findings are based on a statistical scoring system the researchers developed that consolidates and analyzes several measures of socioeconomic status and related factors.

MEMORIAL OPENS PRIMARY CARE FACILITY TO SERVE NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE RESIDENTS

Location Increases Convenience, Decreases Obstacles to Care

September 20, 2023 – Seeing a need for the high-quality, patient-centered care it provides, Memorial Healthcare System has opened a new medical facility in northwest Miami-Dade County. Located at NW 186th Street and NW 87th Ave, it offers easily accessible, primary care services to residents of Palm Springs North (PSN), Country Club of Miami, Miami Lakes, and Hialeah. The communities surrounding Memorial’s newest facility are home to more than 500,000 people.

Memorial will be bringing an Urgent Care Center to the same location in the coming months.

“Nearly 15% of our overall patient volume is from northwest Miami-Dade, so this audience is already familiar with the Memorial brand and the quality of care we provide,” said Melida Akiti, chief community officer for Memorial Healthcare System. “By making it more convenient to access primary care services close to home, we’re removing barriers and providing more individuals the resources to take ownership of their health journeys.”

To put things in perspective, nearly half a million Miami-Dade families are defined as ALICE; they are either in or one emergency away from poverty.

NEW GENE MARKERS DETECT LYNCH SYNDROME-ASSOCIATED COLORECTAL CANCER, MAYO CLINIC STUDY

September 20, 2023 — Researchers from Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center and Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine have discovered new genetic markers to identify Lynch syndrome-associated colorectal cancer with high accuracy. Studies are underway to determine if these genetic markers are in stool samples and, if so, how this could lead to a non-invasive screening option for patients with Lynch syndrome. Their research was published in Cancer Prevention Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

“This is an exciting finding that brings us closer to the reality that clinicians may soon be able to offer a non-invasive cancer screening option to patients with the highest risk of getting cancer,” says Jewel Samadder, M.D., co-lead author of the paper and gastroenterologist at Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. “I look forward to the day when I no longer have to remind patients with Lynch Syndrome to schedule their annual colonoscopy and complete the prep, when they will instead be able to provide a stool sample to screen for cancer.”

COVERAGE FOR HALF A MILLION CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WILL BE REINSTATED THANKS TO HHS’ SWIFT ACTION

CMS Requires States to Pause Disenrollments and Reinstate Coverage for Impacted Individuals

September 21, 2023 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is announcing that it has helped half a million children and families regain their Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance (CHIP) coverage. On August 30, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a call to action to states about a potential state systems issue where systems were inappropriately disenrolling children and other enrollees, even when the state had information indicating the person remained eligible. Thanks to CMS’ swift action, nearly 500,000 children and other individuals who were improperly disenrolled from Medicaid or CHIP will regain their coverage, and many more are expected to be protected from improper disenrollments going forward.

CMS sent a letter on August 30 to all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands requiring them to determine and report whether they have a systems issue that inappropriately disenrolls children and families, even when the state had information indicating that they remained eligible for Medicaid and CHIP coverage. Today’s summary indicates that to-date 30 states report having this systems issue. As a result, to avoid CMS taking further action, all 30 states were required to pause procedural disenrollments for impacted people unless they could ensure all eligible people are not improperly disenrolled due to this issue.

CLINICAL TRIAL TO TEST IMMUNE MODULATION STRATEGY FOR HOSPITALIZED COVID-19 PATIENTS BEGINS

Part of NIH’s STRIVE consortium, the therapeutic may prevent overactive immune systems from causing severe symptoms.

September 22, 2023 – A clinical trial has launched to test whether early intensive immune modulation for hospitalized COVID-19 patients with relatively mild illness is beneficial. The placebo-controlled study, part of the global clinical trials consortium known as Strategies and Treatments for Respiratory Infections and Viral Emergencies (STRIVE), will enroll approximately 1,500 people at research sites around the world. It is supported by the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in partnership with NIH’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).
Immune modulators—treatments for modifying the immune system to better respond to disease or illness—are lifesaving for certain hospitalized COVID-19 patients. However, the optimal timing for administering the medicines to achieve the best outcomes has not been defined.
