Hybrid Position Allows KIDZ Medical Nurse Practitioner to Explore Many Roles
Growing up, Nicole Echeverri, DNP, MSN, APRN-FNP-BC, was always interested in the medical field. Looking for a career that combined the science of medicine and patient care, she decided to pursue nursing and then an advanced degree to become a nurse practitioner. What she didn’t plan on was going into pediatric oncology.
“When I was doing my final practicum in nursing school, there was a lottery for the rotations, and I got the last number of the lottery,” she explained. “No one wanted pediatric oncology; as young college girls, we thought it was so sad. I wrote to the nursing school and said emotionally, I can’t do this. I get attached very easily, and I will not succeed in this.
“Within a week or two of the rotation, I realized it was my calling,” she said. “It’s exactly what I was meant to do. It’s now 17 years later, and I’ve never done anything else.”
Echeverri, a certified pediatric nurse practitioner at KIDZ Medical Services, specializes in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Helen & Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. There, she sees patients, runs a chemotherapy infusion unit within the clinic, and also serves as a nurse manager and educator.

AMA on Ways and Means unanimously endorsing budget neutrality reform

MAY 21, 2026 - “Physicians are grateful that the House Ways and Means Committee took a major step in curing a flawed budget policy that results in physicians facing Medicare cuts every year. Without reform, the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule produces a year-end budget mashup that injects uncertainty in physician practices due to the requirement that the fee schedule remain budget neutral. These cuts threaten the viability of practices, especially in rural and underserved communities.
“Members of Congress are hearing from patients and physicians about the availability of quality healthcare. No doubt, that message is resonating; the committee unanimously supported HR 8163 (the Provider Reimbursement Stability Act). The AMA thanks Reps. Greg Murphy, MD (R-NC) and Tom Suozzi (D-NY) for their leadership on this important bipartisan effort. We look forward to working with Congress as this bill moves along. The vote today is an encouraging sign that meaningful budget neutrality reform is possible.”

Paula and Randy Ringhaver give $75 million to Mayo Clinic in Florida
MAY 21 2026 – Inspired by the memory of their infant son and Mayo Clinic’s vision for the future of healthcare, Paula and Randy Ringhaver of St. Augustine, Florida, have made a $75 million gift to Mayo Clinic in Florida. The gift will support Bold. Forward. Unbound., Mayo Clinic’s investment across the organization to transform healthcare through integrated digital and physical spaces.
In 1980, the Ringhavers’ son, Randal “Lee” Ringhaver, Jr., passed away at 8 1/2 months old from an aggressive form of leukemia. Their daughter, Bree, was 2 1/2 years old at the time of Lee’s passing. To honor his memory, the family has chosen to name the newly expanded hospital tower at Mayo Clinic in Florida the Lee Ringhaver Tower.

Sarasota Memorial Deploys New, Non-Surgical Treatment to Destroy Inoperable Liver Tumors
May 21, 2026 – Sarasota Memorial’s Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute is among the first wave of hospitals and cancer centers introducing a breakthrough, non-surgical treatment for liver tumors – a major advance in cancer care that offers new hope for people with limited options.
A low-risk, ultrasound procedure that can target and destroy inoperable and hard-to-reach liver tumors, the Edison Histotripsy System is completely non-invasive, meaning it can be performed without surgical cuts or incisions. Rather, it involves positioning an ultrasound machine over the abdomen and directing high-intensity sound waves toward liver tumors. The sound waves create a cloud of tiny bubbles that mechanically break down the cancerous masses into a harmless liquid that the body’s natural filtration system clears away over time.
The Food & Drug Administration cleared HistoSonics’ novel treatment for primary and metastatic liver tumors in late 2023, after more than two decades of research and clinical trials. Sarasota Memorial is among a select group of about 100 regional hospitals and cancer centers adopting the technology during its early rollout phase.
“We’re always looking for new and better ways to care for our patients, and this is one of them,” said Kenneth Meredith, MD, gastrointestinal surgical oncologist with SMH First Physicians Group, chief of surgical oncology at Sarasota Memorial and medical director of the gastrointestinal cancer specialty program at SMH’s Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute. “While surgery is typically the first and most effective course of treatment for liver cancer, this technology is a safe, viable option for patients whose tumors cannot be surgically removed, or who may not be good candidates for surgery.”

Center for Child Counseling Honored as FAU Employer of the Year
May 21, 2026 – Florida Atlantic University (FAU) recently honored Center for Child Counseling (CFCC) as Employer of the Year at its 2026 Northern Campuses Awards Ceremony.
“This award honors the partnership we have established with the Center for Child Counseling and recognizes them for actively recruiting from FAU and for providing excellent learning opportunities for our students,” said Kelly Nielsen, assistant director of the Florida Atlantic Career Center.

Philip Marchesini named HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital chief executive officer
May 20, 2026 – HCA Healthcare West Florida Division President Jyric Sims announced today that Philip Marchesini been named chief executive officer (CEO) and market lead for HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital. Marchesini served as CEO of HCA Florida Northside Hospital since 2024, where he led significant operational and clinical advancements.
Prior to his role at Northside Hospital, Marchesini served as chief operating officer of HCA Florida Largo Hospital and HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital. He previously worked in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, at a 412-bed Community Health Systems facility, where he served as assistant CEO and interim CEO of the network’s behavioral health hospital. Marchesini began his career in Philadelphia as a corporate and civil litigation attorney. $1 million helipad opens at HCA Florida Englewood Hospital during EMS week
The upgraded facility is designed to improve air transport across Southwest Florida, building on recent investments to expand emergency services.
May 21, 2026 – HCA Florida Englewood Hospital celebrated the official ribbon-cutting and opening of its new $1 million state-of-the-art helipad during National EMS Week, honoring the hospital’s longstanding partnership with first responders and emergency transport teams who provide lifesaving care on the ground and in the air.
Now fully operational, the new helipad enhances emergency access across the growing Southwest Florida region and strengthens the hospital’s ability to rapidly transport critically ill and injured patients when every second matters.
Designed to prioritize speed, all-weather reliability and enhanced safety for patients and flight crews, the helipad represents another major investment in emergency care infrastructure at HCA Florida Englewood Hospital.

UT MD Anderson names Albert Koong, M.D., Ph.D., chief scientific officer
MAY 21, 2026 – The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center today announced that Albert Koong, M.D., Ph.D., an internationally recognized physician-scientist, has been appointed chief scientific officer (CSO), effective June 1. Koong has served as CSO ad interim since Jan. 1.
The CSO role oversees UT MD Anderson’s laboratory and clinical research enterprise, champions innovation, develops strong partnerships, and provides focused leadership on the science and clinical translation of research programs. In this role, Koong already has accelerated the institution’s momentum on key strategies around impact, accessibility and culture, as well as strengthened communication, alignment and trust across the research community.
Koong has made substantial contributions in the field of oncology research since joining UT MD Anderson nine years ago, and has served in multiple leadership roles, including as division head of Radiation Oncology.
“Dr. Koong has consistently demonstrated exceptional capability and strategic insight, and he has a true commitment to teamwork, transparency and innovation,” said Peter WT Pisters, M.D., president of UT MD Anderson. “At a time of rapid scientific advancement, expanding artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and unprecedented opportunity, we need a leader with deep institutional knowledge and broad national and global respect. CMS Moves to Rein In Misused Medicaid Dollars and Reward Quality Care
Proposed Rule Caps Excessive State Payment Practices, Potentially Saving Taxpayers More Than $775 Billion Over 10 Years
MAY 20, 2026 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed today a sweeping crackdown on state Medicaid payment practices that have driven payment rates well above Medicare levels, leading to excessive federal costs. The Medicaid Managed Care State Directed Payments (SDP) and Medicaid Fee-for-Service (FFS) Targeted Practitioner Payments Proposed Rule would set clear caps and better align Medicaid payments with Medicare standards. If finalized, the proposed rule would generate an estimated $775 billion in total savings over 10 years, including $510 billion in federal savings. Our goal: to refocus Medicaid dollars on individuals and families instead of inefficient payment schemes.
An SDP is an arrangement in which the state directs the health plan on how to pay provider reimbursement rather than allowing the plan to negotiate provider payment. States have often used these arrangements to increase provider payments toward a limited set of providers, typically those capable of providing the non-federal share through provider taxes and intergovernmental transfers. Provider taxes are fees charged to entities such as hospitals based on health care services, and an intergovernmental transfer is when a local government entity (like a public hospital) transfers funds to the state to be used as the non-federal share, both of which are used as the state’s portion of Medicaid payments made back to those same providers. Essentially, shifting money from federal coffers to state coffers. By combining these financing tools with excessive payments, states can shift the state’s share of Medicaid financing to federal taxpayers by drawing more federal dollars without equivalent state fund spending; as a result, the federal government’s effective match rate has shifted far higher than specified in federal law.
In a June 2024 report, the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC) found that while overall, 70% of non-federal share for managed care payments come from state funds, “more than half of [state] directed payments are financed by [intergovernmental transfers] or provider taxes.”1 This is one of the key reasons why stronger oversight and accountability measures are so important. When misused, SDPs drive up costs without improving care. When used correctly, SDPs can properly fulfill their role to expand access, lower cost, and improve quality of care and health outcomes for Medicaid enrollees.

HHS: Statement: Update on Title 42 Order
MAY 22, 2026 – As of today, HHS has issued an interim final rule revising the authority under 42 CFR Part 71.40, which temporarily limits the entry of specific people into the United States to help stop the spread of dangerous diseases. The revised rule now applies the ability to suspend introduction into the United States to U.S. lawful permanent residents (green card holders). Given the current Ebola outbreak, this means lawful permanent residents who have been in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda, or South Sudan within the last 21 days are prevented from entering the United States.
The rule does not permanently bar lawful permanent residents from returning to the United States. Instead, it gives CDC discretionary authority to restrict entry when needed and allowed by law. Applying this authority to lawful permanent residents for a limited period of time provides a balance between protecting public health and managing emergency response resources.

Secretary Kennedy Celebrates Landmark Iowa MAHA Legislation, Announces First-Ever Surgeon General Warning on Excessive Screen Time
MAY 21, 2026—U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. traveled to Iowa Wednesday to join Governor Kim Reynolds for the signing of the state’s landmark MAHA bill and launch of a new advisory from the HHS Office of the Surgeon General warning families, schools, and community organizations about the harms of excessive screen use among children and adolescents.
“Governor Reynolds and the state of Iowa are leading the nation by taking bold action to improve nutrition, increase physical activity, reduce excessive screen time, and address the root causes of chronic disease,” Secretary Kennedy said. “At the same time, HHS is releasing the first-ever Surgeon General’s warning focused on the harms of excessive screen use because American children are facing a growing crisis of social isolation, poor mental health, physical inactivity, and digital addiction. Iowa’s leadership shows what is possible when states partner with the Trump Administration to help children live healthier, more active, and more connected lives.”
Secretary Kennedy began the day at the Iowa State Capitol, where he and Governor Reynolds convened a roundtable discussion with state legislators, public health officials, and community advocates focused on improving nutrition through SNAP reform, strengthening behavioral health and cancer prevention efforts, and expanding healthcare access through the Rural Health Transformation Fund created under the Working Families Tax Cut Act.

NIH researchers identify avenue for enhanced GLP-1-induced weight loss
Modulating intracellular signaling may extend drug effects.
MAY 22, 2026 – A team of researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have unveiled new details about the events GLP-1 receptor agonists trigger within neurons, which have been largely unexplored until now. A study in mice identified key intracellular signaling processes that are tied to the weight-loss effects of the GLP-1 drug semaglutide. The findings improve our understanding of how increasingly prevalent GLP-1s may influence human behavior and identify new opportunities to potentially enhance treatment.
The weight-loss benefits of GLP-1s are well documented and scientists generally know the brain regions associated with these effects. However, several questions remain, such as why responses to medication differ between patients and why the effects for most eventually plateau.
“We know much less about the nuts and bolts of what goes on within the neurons that these medications target. By digging into these mechanisms, we’re beginning to answer some of these questions,” said co-corresponding author Andrew Lutas, Ph.D., an investigator at NIH’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

AHA: House introduces Rural Community Hospital Demonstration extension bill
MAY 22, 2026 – Rep. Randy Feenstra, R-Iowa, yesterday introduced a House version of the Rural Community Hospital Demonstration Program Reauthorization Act, a bill that would extend the Rural Community Hospital Demonstration for five years. The Senate passed their version of the bill May 20. The RCHD provides cost-based Medicare reimbursement for hospitals with fewer than 51 beds that do not qualify as critical access hospitals. The House bill was co-introduced by Reps. Jared Golden, D-Maine, Mike Flood, R-Neb., and Rep. Janelle Bynum, D-Ore.
“Many rural hospitals face financial uncertainty from low patient volumes, sicker patient populations, a challenging payer mix, geographic isolation, and shifts in care delivery,” said Lisa Kidder Hrobsky, AHA senior vice president for advocacy and political affairs. “The Rural Community Hospital (RCH) Demonstration Reauthorization Act allows hospitals to continue providing essential care in their communities by supporting the financial stability of participating rural hospitals. Hospitals with 50 beds or less are some of the most vulnerable to closure and the RCH demo offers an important model to maintain access in rural communities around the country.

Tampa General Hospital Opens TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center
The program provides comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for patients with obesity in the Palm Beaches.
May 18, 2026– Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has launched a new clinic, TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center, to deliver comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for adults with obesity in the Palm Beaches and on the Treasure Coast. The center is supported by the advanced clinical expertise and coordinated services of Tampa General Hospital, Florida’s premier academic health system.
Dr. David B. Schwimmer, a gastroenterologist board certified in obesity medicine, will serve as medical director and supervise the clinic, which will be located in Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach.
The TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center serves adults age 18 and older who meet one or more of the following criteria:
