HOLY CROSS HEALTH HONORS 97-YEAR-OLD VOLUNTEER CARMEL PROVENCAL
April 12, 2024 – In recognition of National Volunteer Month, Holy Cross Health in Fort Lauderdale celebrated 97-year-old Carmel Provencal, who has been volunteering for the hospital since 1959, when the Sisters of Mercy first arrived from Pittsburg
The sisters arrived in the summer wearing black wool habits. Provencal immediately told them that she was a seamstress and would make them habits suitable for Florida, so she made them white cotton habits. In her 65 years of service at Holy Cross, the former home economics teacher has logged 45,360 volunteer hours. Provencal also fashioned quilts for palliative care patients, knit caps and blankets for babies and crafted bags that attached to walkers. Even today, she still sews.
“Carmel embodies the core values of Holy Cross,” said Mark Doyle, President and CEO of Holy Cross Health, who presented Provencal with a plaque, flowers and a superheroes t-shirt inscribed with the words ‘The Remarkables.’ “She is an integral part of Holy Cross and a true treasure to us. Over the years, she has touched the lives of so many here at Holy Cross and in our community.”

MEMORIAL SPORTS MEDICINE + MIAMI SHARKS = A WINNING COMBINATION
April 11, 2024 – Memorial Sports Medicine Center has been named the official medical service provider of the Miami Sharks, South Florida’s Major League Rugby team. The Sharks began their inaugural season last month, with Memorial clinicians providing preventative care, as well as attending to the injury and rehabilitation needs of the professional athletes.
Memorial’s orthopedic and sports medicine specialists serve as team physicians, with athletic trainers also on-site with the Sharks at Chase Stadium, home of Inter Miami CF of Major League Soccer. Memorial’s involvement represents its commitment to provide top-notch orthopedic and medical services to its community athletic teams and universities. In addition to the rugby team, it also works with Florida Memorial University, Florida National University, and the University of Fort Lauderdale, among others.
“Our sports medicine center has been built to meet the needs of South Floridians,” said Rayford Shipman, director of the orthopedic service line at Memorial Healthcare System. “This includes not only professional and amateur athletes, but also recreational competitors and individuals of any age that suffer from sports-related injuries or chronic wear-and-tear conditions.”

GROUNDBREAKING CANCER TREATMENT COLLABORATION BETWEEN NICKLAUS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, FIU SAVES LIVES
8-YEAR-OLD LOGAN GETS A SECOND CHANCE
When eight-year-old Logan learned his cancer had returned it was not the news he or his family had hoped to hear. Just two years earlier during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Logan was told he was cancer-free, but that celebration turned to heartache when he learned he had to face that battle for a second time.
Dr. Maggie Fader, pediatric hematologist/oncologist, KIDZ Medical at the Helen & Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, in collaboration with a team of researchers led by Diana Azzam, assistant professor of environmental health sciences at the FIU Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work at Florida International University (FIU), has developed a functional precision medicine approach that targets cancer by combining genetic testing with a new way to test individual drugs on tumor samples.
This approach was used successfully to guide treatment of relapsed hard-to-treat pediatric cancer patients for the first time. This new approach resulted in 83% of the children showing improvement, including Logan, 8, whose relapsed acute myeloid leukemia was successfully treated through this new guided approach by Dr. Fader.

TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL TO ESTABLISH DR. JAGADAMBA AND KRISHNA CHIVUKULA MEN’S CENTER WITH $6.5 MILLION GIFT FROM FAMILY
The Center’s name reflects the Chivukula’s generosity and passion for health and wellness.
Tampa, FL – April 10, 2024 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) revealed plans this week for a new center focused on men’s health made possible with the generous contribution of Dr. Jagadamba and Krishna Chivukula to the TGH Foundation.
The Dr. Jagadamba and Krishna Chivukula Men’s Health Center, named in recognition of the couple’s $6.5 million donation, is an excellent complement to the highly successful USF’s Pamela Muma Women’s Health Center, which opened in 2019 and is driven by a meaningful partnership between TGH and USF Health. The Dr. Jagadamba and Krishna Chivukula Men’s Health Center will provide seamless, coordinated, comprehensive primary and preventive care for male patients, just as the Muma Center focuses on women’s health. Services will be available to members of the Chivukula Health Center and tailored to the needs of each individual patient, offering annual visits with providers, as well as priority access for urgent, acute, and chronic health care needs.
“With the generous support of the Chivukulas, we’re able to increase access to world-class care for men across the Tampa Bay region,” said Tampa General Hospital president and CEO John Couris. “At the Dr. Jagadamba and Krishna Chivukula Men’s Health Center, like at the Pamela Muma Women’s Health Center, our patients can gain access to timely appointments and test results, as well as care coordination for those who need to see a specialist or schedule a surgery.”

CLEVELAND CLINIC USES NONINVASIVE ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGY TO TREAT SOME LIVER TUMORS
April 10, 2024 – Cleveland Clinic has started using a recently FDA-approved ultrasound device to treat liver tumors. The non-invasive technology, called histotripsy, uses brief high-intensity ultrasound pulses that disrupt and kill the targeted tumor cells.
Choon Hyuck David Kwon, M.D., Ph.D., director of Minimally Invasive Liver Surgery at Cleveland Clinic’s Digestive Disease Institute, led a team of surgeons and nurses during the first procedure that liquified a small tumor on the left side of the patient’s liver. Following the procedure in December 2023, the patient recovered well. The patient was being treated for liver metastases from colorectal cancer.
To deliver the treatment, Dr. Kwon used an ultrasound machine connected to a mobile robotic arm, which was positioned above the patient’s abdomen to precisely target the liver tumor. The microsecond ultrasound pulses created microbubbles in the targeted tumor, which disrupted and killed the diseased cells.

NAACOS CO-FOUNDER, LONGTIME CEO CLIF GAUS WILL RETIRE FROM NAACOS
Search Committee Formed to Find Gaus’ Successor by This Fall
WASHINGTON, D.C. April 11, 2024 – National Association of ACOs President and CEO Clif Gaus, Sc.D., will retire this fall from the organization that he helped co-found in 2012 and has since served as president and CEO. At the time of its founding, NAACOS was and still is the only national organization dedicated to serving ACOs, which rely on groups of physicians, hospitals, and other providers voluntarily working together to improve care coordination, improve quality of care, and lower costs for patients. The NAACOS Board of Directors has formed a search committee to find Gaus’ replacement and expects to name a successor this fall.
When NAACOS was founded by ACO executives organizing themselves to respond to new opportunities to participate in the Medicare ACO models, there were a little more than 100 Medicare ACOs. Today, there are more than 600 Medicare ACOs, serving more than 13 million beneficiaries, nearly 20 percent of all of Medicare. Under Gaus’ leadership, NAACOS counts nearly 70 percent of them in its membership. NAACOS works to advance ACOs through shared learning and education and proactive advocacy with Congress and federal agencies. The organization has grown to represent organizations more broadly interested in value-based care, including in commercial plans, Medicaid, and Medicare Advantage.

FDA’S ODAC RULES UNANIMOUSLY ON A FASTER WAY TO APPROVE MULTIPLE MYELOMA THERAPIES
DECISION WAS BASED ON RESEARCH LED BY SYLVESTER COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER’S C. OLA LANDGREN, M.D., AND WILL ENABLE PATIENTS TO GAIN QUICKER ACCESS TO NEW THERAPIES
April 12, 2024 – An advisory committee at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration voted 12-0 today in favor of a major shift in how the agency evaluates new treatments for multiple myeloma. The FDA often adopts the recommendations of its expert committees, and if it accepts this change, the result will be faster approval of new treatments for multiple myeloma.
Physician-scientists from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, presented their assessment of a newer way to evaluate treatments through measuring “minimal residual disease.”
If the FDA adopts this new endpoint, patients will gain quicker access to new therapies, said C. Ola Landgren, M.D., Ph.D., director of Sylvester’s Myeloma Research Institute. Landgren led the assessment, called the “EVIDENCE meta-analysis,” and presented the findings at today’s Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee meeting.
“The research and evidence presented by Dr. Landgren was impactful, positive, clear and convincing,” said Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., director of Sylvester. “The vote by the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee supporting the use of minimal residual disease to approve new multiple myeloma treatments will greatly speed up the development of new drugs for myeloma and help the thousands of patients with myeloma receive optimal therapy.”

CMS PROPOSES NEW POLICIES TO SUPPORT UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES, EASE DRUG SHORTAGES, AND PROMOTE PATIENT SAFETY
New Mandatory Model Proposed to Improve Health Outcomes Post-Surgery and Advance Climate Resiliency
April 10, 2024 – Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule updating Medicare payments and policies for inpatient hospitals and long-term care hospitals. The proposed rule takes a variety of approaches to improving the health of people with Medicare by addressing social determinants of health, strengthening emergency preparedness, and improving maternal health. The fiscal year (FY) 2025 Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) and Long-Term Care Hospital Prospective Payment System (LTCH PPS) rule builds on the Biden-Harris Administration’s work to support historically underserved and under-resourced communities and promote value-based care.
“Hospitals should be a place you go into and get the care you need, regardless of whether you’re struggling to afford your rent, the color of your skin, or what else is going on in the world around you,” said U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. “The Biden-Harris Administration is doing everything in its power to ensure hospitals have the prescription drugs and supplies they need so providers can focus on what they do best – helping our loved ones be healthy.”

AI MODEL HAS POTENTIAL TO DETECT RISK OF CHILDBIRTH-RELATED POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
NIH-funded study suggests model could identify large percentage of those at risk.
April 11, 2024 – Researchers have adapted an artificial intelligence (AI) program to identify signs of childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) by evaluating short narrative statements of patients who have given birth. The program successfully identified a large proportion of participants likely to have the disorder, and with further refinements—such as details from medical records and birth experience data from diverse populations—the model could potentially identify a large percentage of those at risk. The study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health, appears in Scientific Reports.

STUDY REVEALS NO CAUSAL LINK BETWEEN NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS AND ACETAMINOPHEN EXPOSURE BEFORE BIRTH
NIH-funded research in siblings finds previously reported connection is likely due to other underlying factors.
APRIL 11. 2024 – Acetaminophen exposure during pregnancy is not linked to the risk of developing autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability, according to a new study of data from more than 2 million children in Sweden. The collaborative research effort by Swedish and American investigators, which appears in JAMA, is the largest of its kind and was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Scientists compared siblings – who share genetics and other variables such as parental health, environmental exposures, and socioeconomic factors – and were able to limit the influence of other potential risk factors. This allowed them to focus specifically on, and eliminate, the risk associated with acetaminophen. The study design was unique due to the size of the population captured in the Swedish Medical Birth Register and the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register. Before siblings were considered, there appeared to be a small increase in risk for neurodevelopmental disorders in children exposed to acetaminophen, which was noted in previous studies.
