MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM EXPANDS CARDIOVASCULAR SERVICES WITH NEW HOME FOR MEMORIAL CARDIAC AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE AT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WEST
April 1, 2026 – Memorial Healthcare System is expanding access to advanced cardiovascular care with the opening of a redesigned home for the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute (MCVI) at Memorial Hospital West, creating a centralized, patient-focused destination for comprehensive heart and vascular services.
The new MCVI space represents a $15.59 million investment in cardiovascular care and includes approximately 20,000 square feet of clinical space that will address growing demand on the west side of Broward County, where the need for cardiovascular services was expected to outpace existing capacity. Previously located in office space within the hospital’s adjoining medical office building, MCVI services are now moving into a dedicated standalone facility on Memorial Hospital West’s campus that is designed to bring multiple specialties and services together in one convenient location.
“At the center of this expansion is a commitment to the community and enhancing patient access,” said Dr. Ralph Levy, Chief of Adult Cardiology Medical Services at Memorial Healthcare System. “As demand for cardiovascular services continues to grow, having the right space and infrastructure is critical. This new environment allows us to care for more patients in a way that is more coordinated, more efficient and more convenient for those we serve.”
The building has been fully reimagined and redesigned to support the growing needs of the cardiovascular program. The result is a modern, integrated environment where patients can access physician visits, imaging, diagnostic testing and treatment in one location.
A key feature of the expansion is the addition of a dedicated outpatient cardiac CT imaging service, anchored by a Siemens Alpha 256-slice cardiac CT scanner. This next-generation system uses photon-counting CT, a breakthrough advancement that provides significantly higher image resolution and improved diagnostic precision compared with conventional CT technology.

TGH Cancer Institute and USF Health Morsani College of Medicine Convene International Scientific Leaders for the “Microbes, Genes & Cancer” Symposium
Meeting in Tampa highlighted advances in microbial oncology, cancer biology and cancer immunology, as well as the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Interleukin-2.
April 6, 2026 — Internationally recognized leaders in oncology, virology, immunology, cancer biology and related fields gathered in Tampa on March 2-3 for the “Microbes, Genes & Cancer” Symposium, a high-level scientific meeting hosted by the Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Cancer Institute, the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and the Global Virus Network (GVN).
The symposium explored the latest research to better understand how microbes, genetics, epigenetics and immune pathways intersect to drive cancer development, progression and treatment response.
Taking place at the USF Morsani College of Medicine in downtown Tampa, in the heart of the Tampa Research and Medical District, the symposium served to underscore Tampa General’s growing ability to attract many of the world’s most influential scientific leaders around emerging questions in cancer biology and treatment. Designed for both established investigators and trainees, the Microbes, Genes & Cancer Symposium emphasized cross-disciplinary dialogue and practical insights to inform future research directions, clinical strategies and collaborative efforts.
The meeting kicked off International Science Innovation Week, a broader collaboration among the TGH Cancer Institute, the Global Virus Network and the USF Health Institute for Translational Virology and Innovation, which include the Microbe, Genes and Cancer Symposium and the 2026 Global Virus Network Annual International Scientific Meeting held later in the week.

Discovery highlights how targeting metabolism may improve patient well-being during prostate cancer care
APRIL 6, 2026 – A new study has found that metformin, a widely prescribed diabetes drug, may mimic one of exercise’s core biological effects in men with prostate cancer, raising levels of a molecule tied to energy balance and weight control even when patients are inactive. The findings suggest metformin could help counter the metabolic strain of hormone therapy, when fatigue and other side effects often limit physical activity.
Led by physician-scientists at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, the study appears in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine.
Exercise is one of the most reliable ways to support health during cancer treatment. It helps regulate weight, blood sugar and cardiovascular health—factors that shape how patients feel during therapy and how well they recover afterward.
For many people with cancer, however, regular exercise isn’t always feasible. Fatigue, hormone therapy, pain or advanced disease can limit physical activity precisely when metabolic health becomes most important.
That reality has led researchers to ask a practical question: if exercise confers its benefits through specific biological signals, could some of those signals be activated in other ways?
According to the research, the answer may be yes. Sylvester investigators report that metformin raises levels of a naturally occurring molecule involved in how the body manages energy and weight in prostate cancer patients.
The finding does not suggest that a pill can replace physical activity. Instead, it offers insight into the internal pathways that underlie exercise’s metabolic benefits—and how those pathways might still be engaged when movement is limited.

Orlando Health to acquire Alabama health system, expanding presence and patient care in the state

Stanford Medicine opens new facility offering proton therapy for pediatric and adult cancer patients

APRIL 7, 2026 – Stanford Medicine is the first in the world to introduce ultracompact proton therapy that will make the advanced targeted radiotherapy more accessible to patients.
Stanford Medicine is opening a first-of-its-kind facility to deliver a form of radiation therapy that has been difficult for cancer patients to access.
The treatment, called proton therapy, enables oncologists to deliver cancer-killing radiation precisely to a tumor with minimal damage to healthy tissues. Although it was developed in the 1950s, proton therapy has been hard for Northern California patients to obtain. The football-field-sized footprint of traditional proton therapy equipment, and its high cost, prevents most hospitals from offering the treatment.
Stanford Medicine’s innovation — in collaboration with two medical technology companies — is to drastically shrink the size and cost of the machinery used to deliver proton therapy. They are opening the first proton therapy facility using the new equipment at the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center in Palo Alto, where leaders will cut the ribbon on April 7.

HRSA Announces More Than $135 Million to Expand Nutrition Services and Strengthen Rural Health Workforce
APRIL 7, 2026— The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) today announced more than $135 million in new funding opportunities to expand nutrition services and strengthen the rural health workforce. CMS Finalizes 2027 Medicare Advantage and Part D Payment Policies that Strengthen Accountability and Long-Term Sustainability
April 6, 2026- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released the Calendar Year (CY) 2027 Medicare Advantage (MA) and Part D Rate Announcement today to improve payment accuracy across both programs. The finalized policies also advance CMS’ vision of a sustainable and stable MA program that offers choice to Medicare beneficiaries and is a responsible steward to taxpayers.
The policies in this Rate Announcement are projected to result in a net average increase of 2.48%, or over $13 billion in additional MA payments to plans in CY 2027. This expected increase includes consideration of the various elements that impact MA payments, such as growth rates of underlying costs, 2026 Star Ratings for 2027 quality bonus payments, and risk adjustment updates.
“Medicare Advantage and Part D should work for the people who rely on them,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “These updates keep coverage affordable and ensure patients get real value from their plans.”
CMS is committed to ensuring Medicare beneficiaries are free to choose the health coverage that best meets their needs, and that such coverage maximizes value. Establishing accurate payments in MA and Part D is foundational to this objective and will enable the agency to maintain affordable Medicare coverage while acting as good stewards of a more sustainable and credible program over the long term.

2027 Medicare Advantage and Part D Rate Announcement
April 6, 2026 – Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Announcement of Calendar Year (CY) 2027 Medicare Advantage (MA) Capitation Rates and Part C and Part D Payment Policies (the CY 2027 Rate Announcement).
In the CY 2027 MA and Part D Advance Notice, CMS proposed updates to payment factors for CY 2027 and received a wide variety of comments on the proposals. CMS appreciates the submitted comments. We carefully considered all applicable comments as we finalized the policies contained in the CY 2027 Rate Announcement. The final policies in the CY 2027 Rate Announcement are projected to result in an increase of 2.48% or over $13 billion in payments to MA plans in CY 2027. When accounting for estimated risk score trend in MA due to factors such as population changes and coding practices, this amounts to a 4.98% increase.
