Healthcare Turnarounds Don’t Fail Because Leaders Are Weak

A healthcare organization does not collapse overnight. Margins are chipped away — bit by bit — while productivity declines, the workforce is burned out, and, at best, governance is fragmented. Liquidity is in short supply, and confidence—both internal to an organization and external has diminished before distress ever becomes inevitable.
Once the organization fails, the narrative that leadership failed, the strategy was flawed, and oversight was lagging, plays out with predictable regularity.
But that explanation is incomplete.
Healthcare turnarounds fail less because of leadership weakness and more because of the absence of a structured execution system designed for the realities of healthcare delivery. Recovery cannot be improvised in an industry defined by regulatory complexity, clinical responsibility, and financial pressure. Recovery requires sequencing. It requires discipline. It requires an architectural framework.
Most turnaround models used today come from sectors outside healthcare, ignoring the clear fact that healthcare is not like any other sector. A manufacturer can shutter a plant and move the business elsewhere. A retailer can exit a market, closing its doors. Yet a healthcare organization cannot reduce capacity without affecting patient access and quality or risking the erosion of community trust.

The other is a West Coast Workday implementation for a hospital system that is also undertaking a joint venture, requiring systems integration and operational alignment to move forward simultaneously.
Christiaans’ connection to ACHE dates back to graduate school. After a period away, he reactivated his membership about eight years ago and says the value of the organization remains as strong as ever. For him, ACHE continues to offer members meaningful professional development, strong peer connections, and a pathway for long-term leadership growth in healthcare.

Alan B. Miller Medical Center Celebrates Ribbon Cutting; Next-Generation Hospital to Open in May 2026
Palm Beach Gardens, FL, April 29, 2026 — Business and community leaders, healthcare professionals and invited guests gathered on April 29 for the ceremonial ribbon-cutting of the Alan B. Miller Medical Center, a transformative new hospital set to open for patient care in May 2026. The ribbon-cutting event marks a significant milestone for the seven-story, 365,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility, representing a nearly $430 million investment in the future of healthcare in Palm Beach County. Situated on a 34-acre campus, the hospital features 156 private patient rooms, including six suites, with capacity for future expansion as the community grows.

May 1, 2026- As Shane Strum marks five years as CEO at Broward Health, public healthcare in Broward County has never been stronger. MIAMI (April 30, 2026) – A deadly form of leukemia may be stopped before it ever develops by introducing targeted maternal screening in the United States, according to new research. The national study, led by physician-scientists at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, found that a virus passed from mother to child—often decades before cancer appears—drives sharply higher disease rates in certain populations, pointing to a practical opportunity to prevent cases entirely.
Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma is rare, aggressive and often fatal, but it is also preventable. Its cause—human T-cell leukemia virus type 1, or HTLV-1—is typically transmitted early in life, most often through breastfeeding. Decades later, that early exposure can surface as a fast-moving cancer with few effective treatment options.

Lee Health Awards Grants to Improve Health Beyond Hospital Walls
April 30, 2026— Lee Health has awarded two community microgrants to local nonprofit partners advancing access to care and essential services for vulnerable residents across Southwest Florida. The grants support Project Dentists Care and Lehigh Community Services, two organizations working to address critical gaps in preventive care, oral health, food security, transportation, and public benefits enrollment.

ROCHESTER, Minn. — A Mayo Clinic-developed artificial intelligence (AI) model can help specialists detect pancreatic cancer on routine abdominal CT scans up to three years before clinical diagnosis. It identifies subtle signs of disease before tumors are visible, when curative treatment may still be possible. The findings, published in Gut, mark a milestone in Mayo Clinic’s multiyear research effort to enable earlier detection of one of the deadliest cancers.
The study validates this next-generation AI model using data and workflows that mirror clinical practice, including CT scans from multiple institutions, imaging systems and protocols.
Researchers used the AI model to analyze nearly 2,000 CT scans, including scans from patients later diagnosed with pancreatic cancer — all originally interpreted as normal. The system, called the Radiomics-based Early Detection Model (REDMOD), identified 73% of those prediagnostic cancers at a median of about 16 months before diagnosis — nearly double the detection rate of specialists reviewing the same scans without AI assistance.
The advantage was even greater at earlier time points. In scans obtained more than two years before diagnosis, the AI identified nearly three times as many early cancers that would otherwise go undetected.

Mayo Clinic study finds remote monitoring may detect early complications, reduce burden for lung transplant patients
April 29 ,2026 — In a study published in the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation Open (JHLT Open), Mayo Clinic researchers found that remote patient monitoring (RPM) is a feasible and effective way to detect early health changes and support care decisions for lung transplant recipients during their first year after discharge from the hospital.
Lung transplant recipients require intensive, ongoing monitoring after transplant to detect complications such as rejection or infection.
“Many of these patients live far from the transplant center, making frequent in-person follow-up challenging,” says Cassie Kennedy, M.D., co-senior author and medical director of the lung transplant program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. “In recent years, we have transplanted patients from 25 states, including Hawaii. RPM allows us to stay closely connected to our patients — no matter where they live — after they return home and respond quickly when changes occur.”
While remote patient monitoring has shown benefits in other patient populations, evidence in lung transplant recipients has been limited.

Increases full-year guidance
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., April 30, 2026 — Encompass Health Corporation (NYSE: EHC), the largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in the United States, today reported its results of operations for the first quarter ended March 31, 2026.
“We are very pleased with our start to 2026 as first quarter revenue increased 9.0% and Adjusted EBITDA grew 11.2%,” said Mark Tarr, President and Chief Executive Officer. “During the quarter, we continued to expand our capacity to treat patients in need of inpatient rehabilitation services, opening a new 49-bed hospital in Irmo, South Carolina, and adding 44 beds across existing facilities. For the full-year 2026, we expect to open eight hospitals with a total of 389 beds and add approximately 175 beds to existing hospitals. Our value proposition and operating strategy continue to be validated and we remain highly optimistic about the long-term prospects of our business.”

Adding weekly GLP-1 to cognitive behavioral therapy further reduces heavy drinking
Clinical trial suggests semaglutide may help patients with alcohol use disorder and obesity.
April 30, 2026 – A team of National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists and international colleagues have reported the first evidence from a randomized controlled clinical trial indicating that a GLP-1 receptor agonist can reduce the days in which patients with obesity and alcohol use disorder engage in heavy drinking. Led by researchers at Copenhagen University Hospital, the new study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that GLP-1s could be useful in treating alcohol use disorder.
“Very few medications are currently approved for alcohol use disorder, and these are vastly underutilized. A new option that is more accessible and more effective could be a gamechanger for closing the treatment gap,” said Director of NIH’s National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) George Koob, Ph.D., a study co-author.

Symptom-based approach treats opioid withdrawal in newborns with minimal drug exposure
NIH-funded clinical trial shows that the new approach could also decrease time in the hospital.
April 27, 2026 – A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded clinical study shows that a symptom-based treatment for babies with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) — a highly prevalent condition wherein opioid exposure during pregnancy leads to withdrawal after birth — could speed up their recovery.
To treat babies with moderate to severe symptoms of NOWS, doctors often administer opioid medication, lowering the dose over time. Many doctors commonly use this scheduled dosing approach, however, the new study found that providing “as-needed” doses of opioid medications based on each baby’s signs of withdrawal helped them stop the medicine sooner and go home earlier.

This dynamic half-day gathering will bring together community leaders, healthcare professionals, policymakers, advocates, and changemakers to advance health equity and strengthen well-being across South Florida’s Black communities.
The Summit will feature keynote speaker Dr. Roger Mitchell, President of the National Medical Association, who will frame the national and local landscape shaping Black health today. His remarks will highlight three themes that will guide the day’s discussions: rebuilding trust in healthcare, ensuring accurate and culturally relevant health information reaches our communities, and inspiring the next generation of leaders and advocates. Through keynote remarks and panel conversations, participants will explore strategies and share lessons that strengthen communities and improve health outcomes across the region.
