ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight: Aaron Howell
By Lois Thomson
As someone who previously worked in Fort Myers for several years, Aaron Howell admitted, “I never saw myself living in the ‘real’ South Florida.” However, that changed when he accepted a position last year with the Cleveland Clinic of Florida, where he works as senior director of cancer for the Florida market.
He explained his responsibilities: “Any radiation oncology, medical oncology, palliative care services rendered or staffed within the state of Florida are under my purview in conjunction with my dad, Dr. Zeina Nahleh, vice chief of cancer for Florida, and one of the best breast oncologists in the country.”
Howell was previously with the global GenesisCare team, but said with the Cleveland Clinic being one of the best-known healthcare brands, he appreciated the chance to join. “I saw an opportunity and I wanted to see if I could come over here and make a difference.” He believes he has done so, saying, “Because all of our facilities, outside of Weston, in Martin and St. Lucie and Indian River Counties, are new to the organization, there has been a lot of alignment, integration, program-building, and growth over the past year.”

OP ED: No Matter the Changes in the Healthcare Landscape, Our Strategic Focus Remains Unchanged.
By: Paul Hiltz, NCH President & CEO
Earlier this month, the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) was signed into law. This expansive legislation changes how healthcare is funded and delivered, especially through Medicaid. While intended to reduce federal spending and promote personal responsibility, it may also have unintended consequences:
The law restructures Medicaid, capping the federal funding Florida receives—even as the cost of care continues to rise. Medicaid already reimburses providers below the cost of delivering care. These new reductions make it even harder to sustain care for Medicaid patients without risking our system’s financial health.

Equiply Launches in Florida to Help Hospitals Modernize Capital Planning
By Oscar Misla
Hospitals across the country are facing a quiet but growing challenge: aging medical equipment with no clear roadmap for replacement. Much of the infrastructure installed over a decade ago is now reaching the end of its useful life—and many health systems are still relying on spreadsheets and guesswork to decide what to replace, when, and why.
It’s no surprise that for many hospitals, capital planning feels like running toward a brick wall. Department leaders submit disconnected wishlists, finance teams juggle tight budgets, and urgent replacements often take priority over long-term strategy.
That’s why we built Equiply—a platform that transforms capital planning from a reactive cycle into a proactive, data-driven process. And we’re proud to bring this solution to Florida as we officially launch operations in the state, following our selection into the Mayo Clinic Innovation Exchange.

APhA Deeply Concerned with ACIP Secretariat for Undermining Pharmacist Representation
July 31, 2025 – The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) is deeply concerned with the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) Secretariat’s decision to label Liaison organizations as a “special interest groups” and therefore, “biased” in decision-making.
APhA has served as a non-biased Liaison organization with pharmacists, who are free from conflict of interest, voluntarily serving as scientific advisors on the ACIP work groups for over 25 years. To be told after this length of time and after much scientific and clinical expertise was provided to protect the public and keep patients safe that Liaison organizations are considered “special interest groups” and therefore expected to have “bias” is disgraceful and disrespectful.

Beta-HPV can directly cause skin cancer in immunocompromised people
NIH case study finds virus drives creation of cancer cells in context of defective T cells.
July 30 2025 – Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have shown for the first time that a type of human papillomavirus (HPV) commonly found on the skin can directly cause a form of skin cancer called cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) when certain immune cells malfunction. cSCC is one of the most common cancers in the United States and worldwide. Previously, scientists believed HPV merely facilitated the accumulation of DNA mutations caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, usually the primary driver of cSCC. The findings were published today in The New England Journal of Medicine.
“This discovery could completely change how we think about the development, and consequently the treatment, of cSCC in people who have a health condition that compromises immune function,” said Andrea Lisco, M.D., Ph.D., of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). “It suggests that there may be more people out there with aggressive forms of cSCC who have an underlying immune defect and could benefit from treatments targeting the immune system.”
