PALM BEACH GARDENS MEDICAL CENTER IS FIRST HOSPITAL IN SOUTH FLORIDA TO USE IMPELLA RP FLEX WITH SMARTASSIST HEART RECOVERY TECHNOLOGY April 12. 2023 –Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center (PBGMC) is the first hospital in South Florida to treat a patient with Impella RP Flex with SmartAssist, one of the world’s smallest heart pumps.
This innovative technology, which provides temporary right heart mechanical circulatory support, allows PBGMC to provide more comprehensive and advanced care options to patients in South Florida and the Treasure Coast experiencing acute right heart failure. Impella technology enables patients to recover their native heart, which is ideal for a patient’s quality of life and has the potential to save costs to the healthcare system.
Impella RP Flex received U.S. FDA pre-market approval in October 2022 as safe and effective to treat acute right heart failure or decompensation for up to 14 days following left ventricular assist device implantation, myocardial infarction, heart transplant or open-heart surgery. Impella RP Flex is implanted via the internal jugular (IJ) vein, which enables patient mobility, and its dual-sensor technology is designed to optimize patient management.
Dr. Nishant Patel, a cardiothoracic surgeon, was on the PBGMC team that used the Impella RP Flex recently. He said, “We are excited to add the Impella RP Flex pump to our armamentarium at PBGMC. This is a novel device that can help save some of our sickest patients suffering from right heart failure. I’m excited to provide this therapy for our community and keep our hospital at the forefront of innovation in Palm Beach County.”

UHEALTH TRAUMA SURGEONS TO HOST COMMUNITY FORUMS FOR INPUT ON BLOOD CLOTTING DRUG STUDY
April 13, 2023 – Surgeons at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are seeking community feedback on a planned international study to investigate a blood clotting agent as a treatment for trauma patients who are bleeding to death.
“Bleeding out is the most common cause of preventable death after a traumatic injury,” said Jonathan P. Meizoso, M.D., M.S.P.H., assistant professor of surgery at the Miller School and a member of the surgical team at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. “We want to see if giving a blood clotting drug soon after arrival in the trauma center can save lives.”
Two virtual community forums, hosted on Zoom, are planned to discuss the Trauma And Prothrombin Complex Concentrate (TAP) Trial. The first will be April 13 at noon and the second April 24 at 6 p.m. Attendees will have a chance to ask questions and learn about trauma research from Dr. Meizoso, the site principal investigator for the TAP trial at the Miller School.
TAP TRIAL WILL EVALUATE KCENTRA’S EFFECTIVENESS
The TAP Trial will evaluate the effectiveness of Kcentra®, in addition to standard care, in injured patients predicted to require a large volume blood transfusion. Kcentra® (or 4-factor prothrombin complex concentrate) is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug currently used to reverse the effects of medications given to “thin” the blood for patients who experience bleeding and/or require surgery.
“There is evidence that Kcentra® may reduce the chance of dying in injured patients who are not on blood-thinning medications,” said Dr. Meizoso. “Finding a way to improve patient survival rates is our highest priority here at Ryder Trauma Center.”

FLORIDA BLUE FOUNDATION HONORS NINE WITH SAPPHIRE AWARDS FOR ADDRESSING MENTAL WELL-BEING, PROVIDES $525,000 IN FUNDING
STAT!
April 13, 2023 – The Florida Blue Foundation, the philanthropic affiliate of Florida Blue, is honoring nine recipients, including five who are from South Florida, who are doing exemplary work to provide mental health care services and support to those who otherwise may not have access to this type of care.
The Florida Blue Foundation announced the winners at its annual Sapphire Awards ceremony on April 12 in Orlando. The awardees will share $525,000 that will allow them to continue to focus on ideas and programs to improve access to mental well-being services in their communities.
“As a mission-driven company focused on helping people and communities achieve better health, we are committed to improving access to care, including mental health support, to reduce the stressors that often impact entire families and communities,” said Susan Towler, executive director of the Florida Blue Foundation. “We are truly impressed with the results these nine awardees have achieved and look forward to working with them as they continue to make a difference for the individuals and communities they serve.”
According to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five adults experiences a mental illness each year and one in six children experiences an episode of mental health disorder each year. Given the growing mental health crisis, it is difficult for many people to get the care they need. Fortunately, there are people, programs and organizations within the state of Florida that are addressing mental well-being challenges and improving outcomes.

A NEW APPROACH TO PAYING FOR PRIMARY CARE IN THE MEDICARE SHARED SAVINGS PROGRAM Highlights:
Innovative payment models within accountable care organizations (ACOs) would strengthen primary care and advance CMS’ goal of having all traditional Medicare beneficiaries in a care relationship with accountability for quality and total cost of care by 2030.
There is broad multistakeholder support for a hybrid payment option within the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), including primary care clinicians, ACOs, consumer organizations, health plans and others.
CMS should implement a hybrid primary care payment model within MSSP that accommodates the differing needs and capabilities of various primary care practice types.
April 13, 2023 – Continued underinvestment in primary care, increased administrative burden, and lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have dramatically undermined access to primary care that’s essential for better health. There is growing consensus that payment reform is necessary to create a robust primary care system, changing both how and how much we pay. Evidence has shown that prospective payments offer primary care practices the flexibility to transform care delivery and provide comprehensive, team-based care. Specifically, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) recommends shifting primary care payment toward hybrid models that include prospective population-based payment in addition to a per-visit payment.
ACOs offer opportunity to test payment shifts
The accountable care model is built on a foundation of comprehensive, coordinated, team-based primary care and stands to benefit from improvements that strengthen that foundation. As the largest and only permanent ACO program, serving nearly 11 million traditional Medicare beneficiaries, the MSSP is well-positioned to drive primary care payment innovation. Given CMS’ existing authority to implement partial capitation within the MSSP and test new ways of payment through the CMS Innovation Center, the model offers the opportunity to rapidly implement hybrid payments for primary care.
Leading voices from the primary care and accountable care communities agree. On March 22, 27 diverse organizations, representing primary care clinicians, ACOs, medical groups, consumer advocates, mental health, and health care payers sent a letter to CMS leadership calling on the agency to establish a new hybrid primary care payment option in the MSSP this year. Additionally, the letter outlines six principles to guide the approach: Equity considerations must be embedded in the hybrid payment option. There will be added value for the Medicare beneficiary. The option must result in increased investment in primary care. The option must be fully voluntary. The option must be available rapidly and in all geographies. Implementing this option will create additional value for Medicare.

MIAMI JEWISH HEALTH AND MCDOWELL HOUSING PARTNERS HAVE CLOSED AND BROKEN GROUND ON DOUGLAS GARDENS RESIDENCES The $137 million development will provide accessible housing and on-site medical and social services to local, senior residents April 11, 2023– Miami Jewish Health (MJH), a nonprofit provider of healthcare and living options for aging adults, and leading real estate investment and development firm McDowell Housing Partners (McDowell) closed a $137 million deal for the upcoming Douglas Gardens Residences, Broward County’s newest senior health and living community, creating the largest affordable living development for seniors in the county.
The project will deliver an updated mixed-income community, successfully merging health care and housing into one development for local seniors, on what is currently the MJH 25-acre Douglas Gardens North Campus. Douglas Gardens Residences, which is expecting completion in late 2024, will provide 410 fully ADA-accessible studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units offered at moderate and market-rate prices for residents 62 years of age and older. Three hundred ninety units will be reserved for age and income-qualifying residents, and 20 units will be available at market-rate rental levels.
“Broward County is one of the most cost-burdened counties in the country, with residents spending more than 50% of their income on housing,” said Jeffrey Freimark, president and CEO, Miami Jewish Health. “Increasing rents can be particularly detrimental for seniors, who often live on fixed incomes. Douglas Gardens Residences provides a solution, offering a high-quality housing option at affordable rent levels while integrating comprehensive healthcare services readily available to Broward residents.”

JERSEY MIKE’S RAISES $125,618 FOR GOLISANO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL DURING MARCH AND DAY OF GIVING
April 13, 2023 – During March, the sale of sandwiches at Jersey Mike’s 13 locations in Southwest Florida raised $125,618 for Golisano Children’s Hospital. On March 29, all 13 local restaurants donated 100% of the day’s sales.
Since Month of Giving began in 2011, Jersey Mike’s has raised more than $67 million for local charities, including $250,000 in the last 5 years for Golisano Children’s Hospital. Funds raised help fulfill the region’s critical pediatric healthcare needs through innovative programs, technologies and services.
“As the need for pediatric services continues to increase in our region, we are grateful that local Jersey Mike’s locations continue to support Golisano Children’s Hospital year after year through the Month of Giving campaign. The stores also educate their employees and staff about the cause to help promote donations at the register throughout the month,” said Katy Martinez, Director of Development. “This incredibly generous month-long campaign culminates with a day of giving where 100% of proceeds benefit Golisano. Support like this makes sure we can continue to provide world class care close to home for our children and families.”

REGENERATIVE BIOTHERAPEUTICS: PIVOTING TOWARD A NEW STRATEGY FOR FIGHTING DISEASE April 12 2023 – Mayo Clinic has made significant strides biomanufacturing early-stage therapeutics. The focus is on new medicines derived from the human body, called biotherapeutics, which are shaping the future of medicine.
“Our commitment to delivering new cures for unmet conditions is behind Mayo’s pivot to biomanufacturing,” says Julie Allickson, Ph.D., the Michael S. and Mary Sue Shannon Family Director of Mayo Clinic’s Center for Regenerative Biotherapeutics and the Otto Bremer Trust Director, Biomanufacturing and Product Development, Center for Regenerative Biotherapeutics.
Regenerative biotherapeutics is an emerging field in which biologics from human sources — cells, blood, enzymes, tissues, genes or genetically engineered cells — are used in medicines. The hope is that biologics will provide targeted healing with fewer side effects.

AMA: RESTORED RESTRICTIONS ON MIFEPRISTONE IS A STEP BACKWARDS Appeals court order undermines evidence-based decisions by the FDA
April 13, 2023 - “Last night’s decision from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals is a profoundly dangerous step backwards on access to mifepristone. The appeals court elevated speculative pseudoscience over data and evidence, arbitrarily rolling back access to a safe and effective drug and leaving millions of women without a critical medication for reproductive health care. The AMA fully supports the Department of Justice’s request for emergency relief from the U.S. Supreme Court and will continue fighting to prioritize evidence-based decisions that maintain access to mifepristone.
“Judges and lawmakers should not be substituting their own opinion for the experience, expertise, and authority of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Nor should they ignore the substantial weight of scientific evidence from hundreds of studies and millions of patients confirming the safety and effectiveness of mifepristone, which has been used for decades in both medication abortion and miscarriage management. The appellate court order, if allowed to stand, creates more barriers to care, harms patients and physicians, and exacerbates the maternal mortality crisis, especially for historically marginalized communities. It also opens a pandora’s box for similar politically motivated, unscientific attacks by judges with no medical or scientific training against the FDA’s scientific, evidence-based approvals of countless other medications.”

TRANEXAMIC ACID DOES NOT APPEAR TO PREVENT MATERNAL HEMORRHAGE AFTER CESAREAN DELIVERY
April 13, 2023 – Tranexamic acid appears no more effective than placebo in reducing the need for blood transfusion or preventing maternal death in patients with increased risk for excessive bleeding because of cesarean delivery, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Tranexamic acid slows the natural breakdown of blood clots and was considered promising for reducing the risk of excessive bleeding after giving birth—known as postpartum hemorrhage—after cesarean delivery.
In addition, patients who received tranexamic acid had slightly less need for additional medical or surgical interventions to treat postpartum hemorrhage and a slightly lower drop in red blood cell count.
The study was led by Luis D. Pacheco, M.D., of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and colleagues. It appears in the New England Journal of Medicine. Funding was provided by NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).
“Our findings differ from those of previous trials, which were smaller and therefore did not have the statistical power to detect a difference in the need for blood transfusion between groups,” said study author Monica Longo, M.D., of the NICHD Pregnancy and Perinatology Branch. “The current study included participants from 31 birthing centers across the United States and found no benefit of the drug, compared to placebo.”
Previously, researchers have theorized that since tranexamic acid prevents the breakdown of blood clots, the drug might slow blood loss and reduce the risk of postpartum hemorrhage. Tranexamic acid has been found to be effective among women experiencing postpartum hemorrhage. Researchers sought to determine the effectiveness of the drug for patients undergoing cesarean delivery who did not have hemorrhaging at the time of treatment.
Researchers assigned 11,000 patients to receive either intravenous tranexamic acid or placebo after umbilical cord clamping at the time of cesarean delivery. The study included women who had undergone scheduled and unscheduled cesarean delivery.
The researchers reported the results as a single primary outcome of events that might be expected with postpartum hemorrhage, the need for a transfusion of red blood cells or death. These events occurred in 201 patients (3.6%) in the tranexamic acid group and 233 (4.3%) in the placebo group, a difference that was not statistically significant. For the placebo group, one death occurred. There were no deaths in the tranexamic acid group. There was no significant difference between the groups for the secondary outcome of estimated blood loss of more than 1 liter during the procedure: 7.3% in the tranexamic acid group, 8% in the placebo group.
