CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON NISHANT PATEL, MD, FIRST IN COUNTY TO PERFORM 150-PLUS PROCEDURES USING CRYONB FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT

Innovative therapy uses freezing to temporarily block signals from nerves in affected area during a cardiothoracic procedure at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.

Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. – April 25th, 2024 – Nishant Patel, MD, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, is the first physician in Palm Beach County to perform more than 150 minimally invasive heart valve procedures using Cryo Nerve Bloc (cryoNB) therapy to help manage postoperative pain in patients.

Achieving the 150-case milestone makes Dr. Patel the No. 1 user in the county of cryoNB therapy, an innovative non-opioid alternative for pain relief after surgery. Dr. Patel has been using cryoNB therapy at the hospital for approximately 2 ½ years.

The cryoNB technology, which is manufactured by AtriCure, uses a unique freezing method to temporarily block pain signals from nerves in the affected area, producing an effect similar to that of a local anesthetic. The surgeon utilizes a sterile, single-use probe to freeze the nerve at a specific temperature and disable it without damaging its protective structure. This allows the nerve to gradually regrow and the patient to resume normal feeling over several months.

Cross Country Healthcare and FAU Launch Future of Nursing Survey

BOCA RATON, Fla. April 25, 2024 – Cross Country Healthcare, Inc. Survey results reveal a nuanced perspective among nurses toward the integration of artificial intelligence, with more than half expressing reservations and 38% questioning its potential benefits for the nursing field. While a minority recognize AI’s capacity to enhance efficiency, documentation, research, skill development and patient monitoring, concerns linger regarding its perceived lack of empathy, job displacement risks, data security, regulatory complexities, and the learning curve associated with new technology.

GLOBAL CONSORTIUM TO STUDY PICK’S DISEASE, RARE FORM OF EARLY-ONSET DEMENTIA

APRIL 24, 2024 – JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Pick’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease of unknown genetic origin, is a rare type of frontotemporal dementia that affects people under the age of 65. The condition causes changes in personality, behavior and sometimes language impairment. In patients with the disease, tau proteins build up and form abnormal clumps called Pick bodies, which restrict nutrients to the brain and cause neurodegeneration. The only way to diagnose the disease is by looking at brain tissue under a microscope after a person dies.

Researchers at Mayo Clinic in Florida, University College London in England and collaborators worldwide have established the Pick’s Disease International Consortium to study a specific MAPT gene variation known as MAPT H2 that makes the tau protein and acts as a driver of disease. They investigated a connection between the gene and disease risk, age at onset, and duration of Pick’s disease. Their findings are reported in The Lancet Neurology.

Mayo Clinic researchers identified the first MAPT gene mutations for a behavioral form of dementia in 1998, and other genetic changes associated with related dementias in 2001, which paved the way to understanding the mechanisms of tau-related disease. This new study confirms a tau genetic factor linked specifically to Pick’s disease and opens up new avenues of therapeutic design.

NIH RECOVER MAKES LONG COVID DATA EASIER TO ACCESS

Deidentified data from thousands of adults with long COVID are now available to researchers.

April 25, 2025 – Secure data from more than 14,000 adults who participate in National Institutes of Health observational research on long COVID are now available to authorized researchers through BioData Catalyst (BDC). BDC is a cloud-based ecosystem developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH, to accelerate research on heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders. The research on long COVID — broadly defined(link is external) as signs, symptoms, or conditions that persist or develop for at least four weeks after an infection from the virus that causes COVID-19 — is provided through the NIH Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (NIH RECOVER) Initiative.

By giving researchers access to secure data, analysis tools, and resources, the BDC ecosystem aims to spur scientific innovation, collaboration, and discovery, while providing a platform for sharing data and validating results. The addition of RECOVER data to BDC can help investigators identify and explore long COVID connections that may benefit from or inform future studies.

ANALYSIS IDENTIFIES 50 NEW GENOMIC REGIONS ASSOCIATED WITH KIDNEY CANCER RISK

April 26, 2024 – In a new analysis of genetic susceptibility to kidney cancer, an international team of researchers has identified 50 new areas across the genome(link is external) that are associated with the risk of developing kidney cancer. These insights could one day be used to advance our understanding of the molecular basis of kidney cancer, inform screening efforts for those at highest risk, and identify new drug targets. The study was led by scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

A previous genome-wide association study (GWAS) of people of European ancestry identified 13 regions of the genome that are associated with kidney cancer risk. However, the study population was not diverse. To identify additional regions, researchers conducted a GWAS in participants of many different genetic ancestries that included 29,020 people with kidney cancer and 835,670 people without kidney cancer. Analysis of the data, which came from published studies, biobanks, and a new study, resulted in the identification of 50 new regions associated with the risk of developing kidney cancer, bringing the total number of such regions to 63.

EXPERIMENTAL NIH MALARIA MONOCLONAL ANTIBODY PROTECTIVE IN MALIAN CHILDREN

The experimental monoclonal antibody binds to and neutralizes “sporozoites,” the form of the malaria parasite transmitted by mosquitoes that invades the liver to initiate infection. NIAID

Mid-stage trial shows treatment prevents infection, disease.

April 26, 2024 – One injected dose of an experimental malaria monoclonal antibody was 77% effective against malaria disease in children in Mali during the country’s six-month malaria season, according to the results of a mid-stage clinical trial. The trial assessed an investigational monoclonal antibody developed by scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and results appear in The New England Journal of Medicine.

“A long-acting monoclonal antibody delivered at a single health care visit that rapidly provides high-level protection against malaria in these vulnerable populations would fulfill an unmet public health need,” said Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of NIH.
