Dr. Shanel Bhagwandin Jupiter Medical Center First in the Region to Perform Robotic Whipple Procedure The minimally invasive approach is associated with faster healing for pancreatic procedure
August 12, 2025 — Jupiter Medical Center (JMC), the region’s only independent, not-for-profit hospital, is again leading the way in robotic surgery, as the first from between Palm Beach and Orange Counties to offer a robotic option for the complex Whipple procedure. The procedure, also known as a pancreaticoduodenectomy, is used to treat pancreatic cancer, cysts, tumors, and pancreatitis, as well as other types of gastrointestinal tumors and cancers. The life-saving procedure involves removing the head of the pancreas, the first part of the small intestine, the gallbladder, and bile duct, reconstructing a large part of the gastrointestinal tract.
“Jupiter Medical Center continues to lead the way with our advanced surgical robotics program,” said Amit Rastogi, MD, MHCM, President and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “Since opening the Johnny and Terry Gray Surgical Institute in 2024, we’ve continued to advance our offerings to ensure that we are providing the best possible care for our patients, which includes an increase in access to the latest minimally invasive procedures.”
Jupiter Medical Center’s surgical robotics program is robust, spanning numerous specialties and offering the latest technology. Last year, JMC became one of the first hospitals in Florida to acquire the da Vinci 5, the most advanced surgical robot, which was used to perform the robotic Whipple procedure.

UM Study: Breaking the Link Between Alcohol Use and Pancreatic Cancer

Model provides better understanding of how chronic inflammation related to alcohol consumption accelerates pancreatic cancer development
AUG. 12, 2025 – Despite increasing evidence linking alcohol consumption to cancer, little is known about the biological mechanisms behind the association. A new study, published today in Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology, suggests that inhibiting a cellular molecule called CREB might thwart pancreatic tumor development in response to alcohol.
“Our model serves as an important platform for understanding how chronic inflammation related to alcohol consumption accelerates the development of pancreatic cancer,” said Siddharth Mehra, Ph.D., a scientist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and first author on the study.
Chronic, high alcohol use damages acinar cells in the pancreas, specialized cells that produce digestive enzymes. The damage in turn causes the cells’ enzymes to increase inflammation in the tissue, exacerbating damage to the pancreas.
Over time, precancerous lesions can develop, increasing the risk for full-blown pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest types of tumors. Previous studies have implicated CREB, a DNA-binding protein that regulates gene activity, and associated molecules in helping to mediate this process.

Sarasota Memorial Prepares to Clear Land for SMH-North Port and $57 Million Expansion
August 11, 2025 – As Sarasota Memorial Health Care System prepares to begin clearing land for North Port’s first full-service hospital, SMH leaders are already planning the future expansion of the south county campus.
The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board approved spending $57 million to add three floors of shell space to the 100-bed hospital, and one floor of shell space to an attached medical office building. That will bring the total cost of the project to $507 million.
A groundbreaking is planned for November. When completed, Sarasota Memorial Hospital-North Port will be nine stories tall, and the adjacent medical office building will be three stories. Adding shell space now rather than waiting five years or more will allow SMH to quickly double the inpatient capacity from 100 to 208 beds and increase the medical office space from 60,000 to 90,000 square feet.
“Given the rapid growth in the south county region, and the escalation of cost and impact of future construction, we felt it made sense, financially and operationally, to design the first tower so that it can be expanded quickly with less impact on patients, staff and hospital operations,” said David Verinder, CEO of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System.

Beware of fake “free” services or gifts — protect your Medicare information and stay alert.
August 13, 2025 (SUNRISE, Fla.) – Scammers posing as salespeople may try to trick you into signing up for hospice care without your knowledge.
Here’s how the scam works:
-Scammers may contact you by text, phone, email, fake ads or even show up at your door. -They offer “free” gifts or in-home services such as cooking, cleaning, groceries, protein shakes or medical equipment.
-In exchange, they may ask for your Medicare number and a signature. -Without your full understanding, you may be enrolled in hospice care so they can fraudulently bill Medicare in your name. -Protect yourself: Never share your Medicare number or sign anything in exchange for free services.
