| Dramatic Drop in Marijuana Use Among U.S. Youth Over a Decade: (2011 to 2021)
FAU Study Also Finds Changing Landscapes of Use by Gender, Race/Ethnicity
October 28, 2024 – Marijuana has emerged as one of the most commonly used illicit substances among adolescents in the United States. Given the rising number of states legalizing recreational marijuana for adults and the decreasing perception of risk among adolescents, tracking trends in youth marijuana use is more crucial than ever.
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine conducted a comprehensive study using data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey between 2011 and 2021, which surveyed 88,183 adolescents in grades nine through 12. Researchers focused on the overall time trends in use of marijuana as well as variations by gender, race/ethnicity, and school grade. These data provide important insights into the changing landscape of marijuana use among American youth.
The study, published in the journal Pediatric Reports, reveals that one of the most striking results from the analysis is the significant decrease in the percentage of adolescents reporting current marijuana use. In 2011, 23.1% of adolescents indicated they were current users, but by 2021, this figure had dropped to 15.8%. Additionally, the percentage of adolescents trying marijuana for the first time before age 13 also saw a notable decline, from 8.1% in 2011 to 4.9% in 2021.

Lee Health and Lee County Vote to Approve Mission Agreement, Allowing for Conversion of the Health System to a Community-Focused Nonprofit
After more than a year of due diligence, the final vote marks the conclusion of a three-phase process shaping the future of Southwest Florida’s preeminent healthcare provider.
October 28, 2024 — More than a year ago, the Lee Health Board of Directors began evaluating a future for the health system to safeguard its long-term strength, ensure local control and protect its safety-net mission—offering high-quality healthcare to everyone in the community, regardless of their ability to pay. This afternoon a vote by the Lee County Board of County Commissioners approving the Mission Agreement, following the October 7, 2024 vote by the Lee Health Board of Directors approving the same, marked the final step in the approval process. The votes allow for the conversion of the health system from a public/special district of government to a community-focused nonprofit and clearing the path for Lee Health to finalize the conversion through the complete transfer of assets and liabilities of Lee Health to the successor community-focused nonprofit entity, Lee Health System, Inc.
Changes to Lee Health’s Enabling Act in 2023 allowed the Board of Directors to evaluate if conversion to a community-focused nonprofit was in the best interest of the residents of Lee County. Following the course prescribed by the legislation, the Board of Directors commissioned an independent study, engaged expert, third-party counsel, collaborated with federal, state and local governments and held multiple Board work sessions, community town halls and public workshop meetings.

World Stroke Day: Raising Awareness on Stroke’s Impact Across All Ages
October 29, 2024 — On World Stroke Day, Palm Beach Health Network (PBHN) joins health care providers globally in raising awareness about stroke, a condition that affects approximately 800,000 people annually in the U.S., according to the CDC. While often associated with older adults, stroke is increasingly affecting younger adults, due to factors like hypertension, diabetes, and tobacco use. It’s critical to recognize that stroke can strike anyone, regardless of age.
“Strokes do not discriminate by age,” says Dr. Dennys Reyes, an interventional neurologist at the at Delray Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center. “More and more, we are seeing younger patients affected by stroke, and this makes it even more important to educate the public about early recognition and prevention. Every second counts.”
Strokes occur when the blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In both cases, prompt medical intervention is key. Over 87 percent of strokes in the U.S. are ischemic strokes, caused by a clot that blocks blood flow to the brain. These types of strokes can be treated effectively if the patient reaches a hospital in time.

Are robots the future of eldercare?
Researchers in the College of Arts and Sciences’ robotics program are developing software for an autonomous household robot that could help care for the elderly.
By College of Arts and Sciences University of Miami – Are robots the future of eldercare? by College of Arts and Sciences University of Miami – College of Arts and Sciences
In many countries facing aging populations and declining fertility rates, the number of elderly people who need help in their homes may soon exceed the number of younger people able to provide it.
Ubbo Visser, a computer scientist at the University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences, believes robots could help solve this problem.
“Think of it: If you’re able to keep an elderly person one year longer in their home, not only does this give that particular person comfort to be at home, but also it would have a significant financial impact on the medical system,” said Visser, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science. “Sometimes all you need is a robot who is bringing things or a robot who is helping you out of a lounge chair to go to the restroom.”
While this might sound like something out of a science fiction movie, Visser and his students are already developing software for an autonomous household robot able to perform tasks like bringing an elderly person water and reminding them to take their medication.
These are simple tasks for a human, but for a robot, they require complex abilities such as understanding human speech and recognizing and manipulating objects.

R. Pedro Martinez-Clark, Founder of Amavita Heart and Vascular™, Partners with LimFlow®, an FDA Approved System for Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia Patients
Miami, FL – October 15, 2024 – Pedro Martinez-Clark, MD, FACC, a renowned Harvard-trained cardiologist and founder of Amavita Heart and Vascular™, has joined forces with LimFlow® to offer an innovative solution for patients suffering from chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). This partnership with Dr. Pedro Martinez-Clark follows the recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the LimFlow® System, a minimally invasive treatment designed to save limbs and improve the quality of life for patients who have exhausted all other revascularization options and are at risk of major amputation.
The most severe form of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is CLTI, affecting millions of Americans, causing reduced blood flow to the extremities, leading to chronic pain, festering wounds, and, often, amputations. LimFlow® is a groundbreaking transcatheter arterialization of deep veins (TADV) system that offers new hope for patients by reestablishing blood flow in deep veins, helping to heal wounds, reducing pain, and, most importantly, preventing limb loss. It is also the first and only FDA approved purpose-built TADV system.
“As a physician dedicated to treating PAD and preventing amputations, I am excited to partner with LimFlow® and bring this groundbreaking technology to my patients,” said Dr. Pedro Martinez-Clark. “Many of the individuals who suffer from CLTI are underserved and have no remaining options, facing the life-changing reality of amputation. With the LimFlow® System, we can restore blood flow to their limbs, dramatically improving their prognosis and overall quality of life.”

Major gift to enhance Miami Lighthouse for the Blind fight against cortical visual impairment
October 28, 2024 – MIAMI, Fla. – Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MLB) has received a $2 million gift to study and treat a serious condition affecting the sight of more than 180,000 children in the United States.
The grant will help researchers focus on cerebral visual impairment, often called cortical visual impairment (CVI), a disorder caused by damage to the parts of the brain that process vision. It’s most common in babies and young children who have suffered an injury – or lack of oxygen or infection − before, during, or shortly after birth.
“Due to the complexity of the condition, early detection is key to providing a proper diagnosis,’’ said Virginia Jacko, CEO of MLB. “CVI typically goes undetected or misdiagnosed, so this new funding will help lead to a better understanding of the condition’s genetic and neural basis.’’

Genomic variants that increase risk of kidney disease are found in nearly one-third of West Africans
Previous research established that genomic variants in APOL1 increase the risk of developing chronic kidney disease among African Americans.National Human Genome Research Institute
NIH study suggests potential for earlier health interventions for people with West African ancestry.
A study from researchers at National Institutes of Health (NIH) and their collaborators revealed a significant genetic risk factor for kidney disease in people from Ghana and Nigeria. Their study demonstrated that having just one risk variant in a gene known as APOL1 can significantly increase the risk of developing kidney disease. APOL1 is important for the immune system and variants of the gene are linked to increased risk of chronic kidney disease. The study is published in the New England Journal of Medicine and was conducted by researchers from the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) Kidney Disease Research Network.

Bovine H5N1 influenza from infected worker transmissible and lethal in animal models
Some antiviral drugs highly effective against bovine H5N1.
October 28, 2024 – A highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus, isolated from the eye of a farm worker who became infected through contact with dairy cows, was lethal in mice and ferrets infected in a high-containment laboratory environment, according to a new study in Nature. The study investigators also found that the virus isolated from the worker, who experienced mild inflammation of the cornea (conjunctivitis), could be transmitted through the air between separated ferrets and might be capable of binding to and replicating in human respiratory tract cells.
The virus isolated from the worker is called huTX37-H5N1 and has a mutation (PB2-E627K) frequently seen in avian influenza viruses that replicate in mammals, typically making virus replication more efficient. These mutations underscore the need for continued monitoring and evaluation of viruses from the current H5N1 outbreak.
