Baptist Health Foundation Receives $1 Million Grant from Ocean Reef Community Foundation to Benefit Baptist Health Homestead Hospital
March 16, 2026 – Baptist Health Foundation announced today that it has received a $1 million grant from Ocean Reef Community Foundation benefiting the Baptist Health Homestead Hospital Clinical Expansion Fund. The grant will support the building of a four-story, 134,000 sq-ft tower at Baptist Health Homestead Hospital in Homestead, Florida, to increase inpatient capacity, expand surgical and diagnostic resources and enhance the patient experience. The Ocean Reef Community Foundation will be recognized at the hospital with a naming ceremony at a later date.
“We are grateful for the generosity of the Ocean Reef Community Foundation, and for their partnership in this important initiative,” said Alex Villoch, CEO of Baptist Health Foundation. “They understand Baptist Health Homestead Hospital’s vital need for increased capacity. This grant supporting the hospital’s expansion will help us provide extraordinary patient care and treatment in South Dade and the Upper Keys for generations to come.”
Homestead and South Miami-Dade County are experiencing unprecedented growth. The area is expected to welcome around 50,000 new residents in the coming years, placing a strain on the region’s healthcare infrastructure, including Homestead Hospital. The hospital is a crucial healthcare lifeline for Homestead and the Keys, which are isolated from major medical centers and advanced services. Homestead Hospital currently sees nearly 10,000 admissions and performs over 3,000 surgeries annually, operating at consistently high levels of patient utilization.

Global distinction highlights JMC’s exceptional quality, safety, and patient experience
March 5, 2026 – Jupiter Medical Center (JMC) has again been recognized on Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 list, a global distinction that highlights leading hospitals for quality, safety, and patient experience. The annual rankings are developed by Newsweek in partnership with Statista, a global data research firm.
This marks the fourth year that Jupiter Medical Center has earned this designation, making it the only health system in the region to attain this prestigious honor. The World’s Best Hospitals 2026 ranking evaluates hospitals across 32 countries, including the United States, based on a comprehensive methodology that considers:

VITAS Healthcare Inpatient Hospice Care at Oak Manor
MARCH 16, 2026- Residents in Pinellas County now have improved access to high-quality, compassionate end-of-life care with the opening of VITAS Healthcare inpatient hospice care at Oak Manor in Largo. As the first VITAS inpatient center in the region, the facility strengthens the continuum of care for people facing terminal illness by providing around-the-clock clinical support in a comfortable, supportive environment.
The center features 12 private patient rooms designed to offer comfort, dignity and support for patients and families. Individuals living at Oak Manor or anywhere in Pinellas County can now benefit from expert symptom management and clinical oversight without traveling far from home.
The facility, located at 3500 Oak Manor Lane in Largo, is expected to care for more than 400 patients and their families each year.

FAU Researchers Find Concerning Rise in U.S. Teen Obesity Over a Decade
March 16, 2026 – Nearly 1 in 5 teens in the United States is obese, putting their long-term health at serious risk. Obesity in adolescence leads to many deleterious medical conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and mental health struggles with low self-esteem and depression.
Understanding patterns of obesity and weight-loss efforts in U.S. adolescents is critical for shaping effective clinical and public health interventions. Yet, data remain sparse on whether and how adolescents attempt to lose weight.
To explore these issues, researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine analyzed obesity trends among 85,588 U.S. high school students (grades nine to 12) from 2013 to 2023 using the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the most recent data available from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They examined patterns of overweight, obesity and weight-loss attempts, both overall as well as in subgroups of gender, grade level, race and ethnicity. Overweight describes adolescents above a healthy weight for their height, while obesity denotes a greater excess. Both adolescent overweight and obesity have been linked to higher health risks in the short and long term.

For me, this work is not only professional – it’s personal. Cancer has touched my own family, a reality shared by countless families across South Florida and around the world.
The data underscores what so many of us are experiencing firsthand. For example, the American Cancer Society notes increasing incidence among adults under 50, prompting greater emphasis on symptom awareness and timely screening. Separately, updated cervical cancer guidelines now recommend initiating screening at age 25 and prioritizing primary HPV testing every five years for individuals ages 30 to 64.

Ignacio is Breathing and Living Stronger
March 16, 2026 – Ignacio, 9 years old, was born with complete tracheal rings. While typical tracheal rings are “C” shaped, Ignacio’s was abnormally “O” shaped, a rare congenital anomaly.
Ignacio and his family were unaware of this diagnosis until he was 1 when he required emergency surgery at another facility where the medical team communicated to the family that he had congenital tracheal stenosis. He was subsequently discharged from that hospital and was not advised to follow up.
Ignacio is a sports-fanatic who loves playing soccer with his friends, learning karate and running through his school playground but always felt a shortness of breath and at times had trouble keeping up with his friends while racing. Unevaluated by an Otolaryngologist (ENT) until the age of 8, this past year, Ignacio was evaluated for sleep apnea by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital experts where he received multiple exams and studies to get to the bottom of Ignacio’s narrowed airways.

March 17, 2026 – Leaders in brain science, philanthropy, neuroarts, and community health from across the U.S. and abroad converged in Palm Beach County March 2–4, 2026, for the Brain Coast Advisory Council launch convened by Palm Health Foundation. The gathering marked a pivotal moment in South Florida’s emergence as a nationally recognized brain-forward ecosystem, linking the region’s world-renowned brain science institutions, community assets, and innovation to improve brain health and resilience.
South Florida’s Brain Coast has been identified as one of four regions central to an emerging U.S. brain economy strategy—alongside Houston, California, and Pennsylvania—with its unique differentiator being the ability to unite cutting-edge neuroscience research with community-centered action. That vision drew Council leaders to the table, united by a shared conviction cited by the recent McKinsey Health Institute report, The Human Advantage: Stronger Brains in the Age of AI: “Stronger brains strengthen resilience, productivity, and shared prosperity. It is time to invest accordingly.”
The Council explored three interlocking pillars of the Brain Coast vision: deepening brain science, education, and resiliency through research; engaging community to foster brain health across all ages and backgrounds; and spurring innovation to develop novel interventions for mental health illnesses and neurodegenerative diseases. MARCH 18, 2026 – Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has earned an award from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to establish the center’s first Specialized Program of Research Excellence, or SPORE.
SPOREs, first established in 1992 by the NCI, focus on a specific organ site or related cancers and promote interdisciplinary, collaborative and translational research.
The Sylvester program, known as PeRsonalized Outreach and Multifaceted Interventions for Screening Enhancement (PROMISE), is spearheaded by researchers at Sylvester, Emory University and the Morehouse School of Medicine. It aims to transform treatment and prevention for anal and cervical cancer, two cancers linked to infection with human papillomavirus, or HPV. These cancers enact a disproportionately large burden in South Florida and in the Atlanta area, where Emory and Morehouse are located. They also affect populations differently: Incidences of both these cancers are higher in HIV-positive people, while cervical cancer has a disproportionately high incidence in the population that Sylvester serves.

NCH Pediatric Emergency Department Achieves Near-Perfect National Pediatric Readiness Score
March 18, 2026 – The Pediatric Emergency Department at NCH’s North Hospital campus has achieved a 99 out of 100 score on the 2026 National Pediatric Readiness Project (NPRP) Assessment, placing it well above the national average score of 80 and the average of 88 for hospitals with similar pediatric volumes.
The National Pediatric Readiness Project is a nationwide initiative that evaluates emergency departments on their ability to provide safe, high-quality care for children, including pediatric-specific equipment, policies, staff training and quality improvement processes.

Mayo Clinic researchers use milk-derived nanoparticles to target aggressive bile duct cancer
MARCH 16, 2026 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic researchers have developed a promising new way to deliver treatment directly to cholangiocarcinoma tumors, a rare and aggressive bile duct cancer with limited treatment options, using milk-derived nanoparticles that act like guided delivery vehicles. The findings, published in JHEP Reports, point to a potential targeted genetic therapy designed to attack cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue.
“One significant issue is the lack of medications that treat the specific alterations in these cancers,” says Rory Smoot, M.D., surgical oncologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and senior author of the study. “Our approach is designed to turn off specific cancer-driving genes while leaving healthy tissue alone.”

Clinical trial results support use of weekly extended-release buprenorphine for treatment of opioid use disorder during pregnancy
NIH-supported study shows this treatment resulted in higher rates of illicit opioid abstinence than current standard of care.
MARCH 16, 2026 – In a clinical trial supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a research team found that administering weekly injectable extended-release buprenorphine for treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) during pregnancy led to higher rates of abstinence from illicit opioids than buprenorphine given daily under the tongue (sublingual), one of the standard methods of treatment. Additionally, serious adverse events were less common in those receiving extended-release treatment. The findings, which support the use of this formulation of buprenorphine for treating OUD during pregnancy, were published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
“These findings are clinically valuable for they show us that this injectable extended-release buprenorphine formulation is safe to use in pregnancy and results in better opioid abstinence outcomes compared to sublingual buprenorphine,” said Nora D. Volkow, M.D., director of NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). “This is especially relevant in the context of the ongoing opioid overdose crisis and public health emergency.”

NIH invests $150 million in human-based research to reduce use of animal models
New program will develop, validate and standardize research tools to develop more sophisticated and relevant models of disease.
MARCH 18,2026- The National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced more than $150 million to develop and scale research methods that better simulate human biology and reduce reliance on animal models, a priority of the Trump Administration. The funding marks the first awards under the Complement Animal Research in Experimentation (Complement-ARIE) program, an initiative to develop, implement, and standardize lab or computer-based methods, also known as new approach methodologies (NAMs). Research teams across the United States will lead projects designed to produce more predictive models of human disease.

MARCH 17, 2026 – Researchers and healthcare innovators can now access additional data from one of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) innovative care delivery models. A second public release of the data submitted to CMS as part of the Acute Hospital Care at Home (AHCAH) initiative will be available beginning on March 17, 2026. CMS plans to release this second batch of data through the Research and Data Assistance Center (ResDAC), and includes data collected from April 1, 2023, through September 30, 2025. Combined with previously released data spanning from the initiative’s launch in November 2020 through March 2023, researchers now have access to nearly five years of data on this innovative initiative.
