Beyond Compliance: Delivering True Price Transparency for Patients
By Mary C. Mayhew
As one of the most heavily regulated industries by federal, state, and even local governments, in addition to private accreditation entities, hospitals are no strangers to complying with regulations, ordinances, and other requirements. By one count, for example, 750 federal health-related regulations were finalized between 2005 and 2025 at an estimated cost of compliance of $313 billion dollars and 368 million paperwork hours.
When the federal government first mandated online publication of negotiated payment rates between hospitals and insurers in 2021, in addition to previous state and federal requirements to post pricing data, hospitals did what they always do and swung into gear to comply. They deployed teams comprised of information technology, finance, and data professionals to build and publish online machine-readable files in the prescribed format that provides the payment amount for every single service provided negotiated with every single health plan and insurer with which they contract.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of South Florida to Break Ground on New $33 Million House, Transforming Pediatric Care for Families in Need
New House Will Expand Services and Accommodations by over 75%
August 5, 2025 – RMHC South Florida will host its groundbreaking ceremony for a new $33 million House on September 9, 2025. This development marks a significant leap forward in the organization’s mission to provide essential support for families with critically ill children. As the only Ronald McDonald House serving all counties in South Florida and the sole provider of free pediatric lodging in Miami, this expansion will give Hope a New Home.
Currently, RMHC South Florida hosts nearly 225 families and offers over 3,000 nights of care annually. However, it operates at full capacity every night, and in 2024, 125 families had to be turned away, making the need for additional accommodations more urgent than ever.
After more than a decade of planning and dedication, and with 80% of the funding secured, the nonprofit expresses its profound gratitude to the generous donors, advocates, and champions who have made this expansion possible. The new house will increase RMHC South Florida’s capacity from 31 to 54 rooms, allowing it to serve over 420 families each year and provide 5,740 nights of care annually, effectively eliminating the waitlist. This transformation will not only offer additional lodging but also meals, activities, and essential community care.

ROOFING CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH FLORIDA’S SUPPORT OF MAKE-A-WISH TOPS $2 MILLION
August 4, 2025 – For the past 13 years, the Roofing Contractors Association of South Florida (RCASF) has been donating proceeds from its annual fishing tournament to Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida. While its $2.1 million total, including more than $400,000 from this year’s event, will ultimately grant 420 life-changing wishes for critically-ill children, it was the experience of one particular child roofing industry representatives were most interested in as they gathered recently at Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada.
Seven-year-old Jacob Acevedo, whose father, Jesus Acevedo, works for Best Roofing, battled leukemia for more than a year, a struggle his parents shared with the nearly 600 people that participated in the fishing tournament. The Pompano Beach resident’s wish, to visit Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios in Southern California, was granted earlier this year from proceeds generated by the roofing contractors 2024 fundraiser.

Study to test if mothers’ diet prevents early sign of food allergy in babies
NIH trial to assess if eating peanuts, eggs during pregnancy, breastfeeding protects infants.
AUGUST 5, 2025 – A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored clinical trial testing whether maternal consumption of peanuts and eggs during pregnancy and breastfeeding prevents babies from developing an early sign of allergies to these foods began today. Food allergy affects about 8% of children in the United States and sometimes causes severe or life-threatening reactions. Peanut and egg are two of the most common early-childhood food allergens. The study will enroll pregnant mothers who are not allergic to peanut or egg but whose babies are at high risk for food allergy because the mother has a parent, sibling or child with allergic disease. NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is funding the trial.
“Introducing food allergens such as peanut and egg into infants’ diets around four to six months of age has proven to be an important element of food allergy prevention, but this intervention comes too late for some children,” said Alkis Togias, chief of NIAID’s Allergy, Asthma, and Airway Biology Branch. “We need additional, earlier strategies to help prevent the development of food allergies in children at high risk for them.”
Studies have found that before some infants ever eat peanut or egg products, their immune systems have already produced an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE) against these foods, and this antibody is a precursor of food allergy. These findings indicate a need to develop early childhood food allergy prevention strategies that precede the introduction of solid foods.
