DR. JOSEPH RICOTTA COMPLETES 300TH TCAR PROCEDURE

May 4, 2023 – Delray Medical Center is proud to announce that Dr. Joseph Ricotta has successfully performed his 300th Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) procedure. This significant milestone underscores Dr. Ricotta’s expertise and commitment to providing patients with advanced vascular care.

TCAR is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat carotid artery disease, which occurs when plaque buildup narrows the arteries that supply blood to the brain. TCAR allows for a safer and more efficient approach to removing plaque from the carotid artery and restoring normal blood flow to the brain.

Dr. Ricotta, who serves as the National Medical Director of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy for Tenet Healthcare as well as Professor of Surgery and Program Director of the vascular surgery fellowship at Florida Atlantic University School of Medicine, expressed his excitement about the achievement. “Performing 300 successful TCAR procedures is a testament to our team’s dedication to providing patients with the latest and most advanced treatment for carotid artery disease. It’s an honor to be able to offer this life-saving procedure to those in need.”

JACKSON HEALTH SYSTEM AND UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI CASE STUDY SHOWS COVID-19 CAN BE TRANSMITTED FROM MOTHER TO BABY THROUGH PLACENTA, AND CAUSE BRAIN INJURY

Two maternal infections caused seizures, developmental delays, and other health issues in newborns

Miami – Neonatologists at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center have found that the COVID-19 virus breached the placenta and caused brain damage in two newborns.

While admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Holtz Children’s Hospital, both infants tested negative for the virus, but had significantly elevated COVID antibodies in their blood, indicating that either antibodies crossed the placenta or passage of the virus occurred and triggered the babies’ immune response.

Both infants experienced seizures, small head sizes, and developmental delays. One of the babies died 13 months later. The study titled, “Maternal SARS-CoV-2, Placental Changes and Brain Injury in Two Neonates” was published April 6 in the journal Pediatrics. This is the first study to confirm cross-placental COVID transmission leading to brain injury in a newborn.

“Many women are affected by COVID-19 during pregnancy, but to see these kinds of problems in infants at birth was clearly unusual”, said Shahnaz Duara, MD, the medical director of the NICU at Holtz Children’s, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and the senior author on the study.

Early in the COVID pandemic, Jackson and University of Miami neonatologists observed transient lung disease and occasional blood pressure issues among newborns who had similarly tested negative at birth but were born to COVID-positive mothers. This hinted at infection, but it was still unclear if the virus crossing the placenta caused the problem.

UHEALTH JACKSON CHILDREN’S CARE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS FIRST IN FLORIDA TO ACHIEVE AUTISM-FRIENDLY DESIGNATION THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH UM-NSU CARD

Inclusion and Accessibility at the Forefront of Pediatric Emergency Care

May 4, 2023  – UHealth Jackson Children’s Care emergency departments collaborated with University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD) to achieve autism-friendly designation, becoming the first network of pediatric emergency departments in Florida to receive this distinction.

“Our goal is to provide the highest quality care to every pediatric patient that steps through our doors, regardless of circumstance,” said Joanne Ruggiero, senior vice president and chief executive officer of Holtz Children’s Hospital and The Women’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial. “That is why we believe accessibility to health care that is inclusive for our special needs patients is not just necessary, but essential, making this designation a major step in the right direction.”

The autism-friendly designation means that the staff at all four emergency department locations – Holtz Children’s Hospital, Jackson North Medical Center, Jackson West Medical Center, and Jackson South Medical Center– have been specially trained to treat patients with autism and related disabilities. Additionally, all of the emergency departments now have a designated sensory-friendly exam room to give this patient population the opportunity to experience health care in a safe, comfortable, and controlled environment. The rooms feature soft music, dimmed lights, and a beanbag chair.

“We are proud to further develop our partnership with Jackson Health System as they continue to create safe spaces for patients with autism and related disabilities,” said Dr. Michael Alessandri, executive director of UM-NSU CARD. “This designation among the UHealth Jackson Children’s Care emergency departments shows that with the right team of compassionate caregivers, we can work together to make health care more accessible for everyone.”

CLEVELAND CLINIC RARE DISEASE CENTER RECOGNIZED AS A NATIONAL CENTER OF EXCELLENCE BY NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR RARE DISORDERS

Designation improves access to care for the 1 in 10 Americans living with a rare disease

May 4, 2023 –  Cleveland Clinic has been designated a Rare Disease Center of Excellence by the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD). The new Cleveland Clinic Center for Rare Diseases is one of 40 U.S. academic medical centers selected to join the first-of-it-kind national network dedicated to diagnosing, treating and researching all rare diseases.

The NORD Rare Disease Centers of Excellence program provides a much-needed national infrastructure to help accelerate advancements for rare diseases. The network of medical institutions, led by NORD, is designed to improve rare disease patient care by connecting patients to appropriate specialists regardless of disease or geography.

“By joining this national network, we can collaborate closely with other academic institutions to collectively improve care for the 25 million Americans who are affected by rare diseases,” said co-director of Cleveland Clinic Center for Rare Diseases Daniel Sullivan, M.D., Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. “As a NORD-recognized center, Cleveland Clinic will have access to resources and expertise from a large network of institutions working together to innovate around new treatments, therapies and research.”

Nearly one in 10 Americans has been diagnosed with a “rare disease” – a term used to classify a condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people. While more than 7,000 diseases are classified as rare, no treatments currently exist for 95% of these diseases.

“Unlike more common serious illnesses, people living with rare diseases face many challenges in finding a diagnosis and accessing quality care. Being part of this network provides us the structure to collaborate with other providers, and help more patients, throughout the country,” said Center for Rare Diseases director Julie Kaplan, M.D., medical director of Center for Personalized Genetic Healthcare. “With the resources that come with being recognized as a Center of Excellence, we can further enhance care and find the best solutions for each individual patient.”

LEADINGAGE FLORIDA LAUDS LEGISLATURE FOR CONTINUED FOCUS ON NURSING HOME QUALITY AND FUNDING

May 5, 2023 – LeadingAge Florida, Florida’s only association representing the entire continuum of care for older adults, issued a statement following the release of the approved budget by lawmakers. The final budget includes increases for Medicaid nursing homes totaling $125 million in recurring funds. These funds are earmarked for a one percent across the board rate increase and an increase to the Quality Incentive Program Payment Pool.

LeadingAge Florida applauded the Legislature’s decision to direct funding to recognizing high quality nursing homes and providing inflationary increases that recognize the continuing growth in costs faced by nursing home providers.

The following statement is attributable to President and CEO Steve Bahmer.

“We are grateful to Senate President Passidomo, House Speaker Renner and the entire Legislature for their continued commitment and focus on nursing home funding, particularly with a focus on quality. Florida’s nursing homes offer among the best long-term care in the nation, and that care continues to improve because of our long-term care professionals. The allocation of this funding reinforces that the people caring for our nursing home residents are the most significant factor in the quality of care. We know the legislature is faced with a number of difficult decisions when finalizing the budget and we are grateful for their continued support.”

SCRIPPS RESEARCH PRECLINICAL STUDY FINDS INSOMNIA DRUG BLOCKS OXYCODONE RELAPSE

Study tested suvorexant (Belsomra®) for its ability to reduce drug-taking and block relapse.

April 27, 2023 –LA JOLLA, CA—The insomnia drug suvorexant (Belsomra®) might be an effective treatment for opioid use disorder, according to a preclinical study from Scripps Research.

In the study, published April 27, 2023, in Frontiers in Pharmacology, the Scripps Research scientists found that suvorexant reduced prescription opioid intake and helped protect against relapse in rats modeling opioid use disorder (OUD). If the results translate to humans in clinical trials, the insomnia drug could offer a promising approach for the millions of people who have OUD.

“Our results suggest that repurposing suvorexant could be a good strategy for reducing drug intake and blocking relapse in cases of prescription opioid abuse,” says study senior author Rémi Martin-Fardon, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine at Scripps Research.
