American Heart Month: Sarasota Memorial Celebrates 90% Drop in Heart Attack Deaths — While Tackling Today’s Biggest Cardiac Threats

February 23, 2026 – There is encouraging news about our nation’s heart health. Thanks to advances in cardiac care and prevention, the percentage of people dying from heart attacks nationwide has dropped significantly – nearly 90 percent – in the past 50 years.

As American Heart Month comes to a close this week, Sarasota Memorial Hospital is spotlighting the progress made – and the complex work that remains. Despite advances in cardiac care and rapid intervention, heart disease remains the #1 killer of both men and women, but now with arrhythmias, hypertension and heart failure making up the larger share of heart-related deaths.

“We’ve made tremendous strides in getting patients through that first, critical cardiac event, and we’re proud of that progress,” said Jonathan Hoffberger, DO, chief of cardiovascular surgery at Sarasota Memorial. “But what truly defines success is how well patients recover, how we prevent the next event, and how our teams work together to guide them through the rest of their lives.”

NCH First in Florida to Activate New Implantable Therapy for Sleep Apnea

February 25, 2026 – Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) has become the first healthcare system in Florida to activate a new implantable therapy designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea, marking a significant milestone for patients who struggle with traditional treatments such as CPAP.

The therapy, known as GENIO, uses gentle electrical stimulation to help keep a patient’s airway open during sleep. Unlike CPAP, which relies on pressurized air delivered through a mask, the GENIO system works from inside the body by supporting the muscles that control tongue movement, a common cause of airway collapse in people with sleep apnea.

Two patients were recently activated by the sleep medicine team at NCH’s Pulmonary and Sleep Center, led by Jose Valle, MD and Gaja Shaughnessy, MD along with the program’s nurse navigator.

“Activation is the moment when the therapy is turned on for the first time and customized for the patient,” said Gaja Shaughnessy, MD, pulmonologist, NCH Critical Care, Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine. “After the device is implanted and the body has healed, we carefully program the stimulation so it works in sync with the patient’s natural breathing during sleep.”

FDA Launches Framework for Accelerating Development of Individualized Therapies for Ultra-Rare Diseases

FEBRUARY 23, 2026 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today issued draft guidance for sponsors seeking full approval for targeted individualized therapies by generating substantial evidence of effectiveness and safety when randomized controlled trials are not feasible due to small patient populations.

The draft guidance, issued by the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research and Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, specifically discusses genome editing and RNA-based therapies such as antisense oligonucleotides but leaves open the potential that this framework may apply to additional tailored therapeutics provided they directly address the underlying specific cause of the disease.

“President Trump promised to accelerate cures for American families — and we are delivering, especially for children with ultra-rare diseases who cannot afford to wait,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “We are cutting unnecessary red tape, aligning regulation with modern biology, and clearing a path for breakthrough treatments to reach the patients who need them most.”

“This guidance is a critical step the FDA is taking to tailor our regulatory approach to patients with ultra-rare conditions,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H. “It is our priority to remove barriers and exercise regulatory flexibility to encourage scientific advances and deliver more cures and meaningful treatments for patients suffering from rare diseases.”
