Medical Tourism Requires Cooperation, Not Competition
By Wayne Brackin
Though Miami has always welcomed a flow of international patients from the Caribbean and Central and South America—influenced by the city’s proximity and similar culture, language, cuisine, and more—those patients seeking specialists or experts in specific disease processes have not always stayed in the state. Many of those with the means to come here instead travel to the Mayo Clinic, Memorial Sloan Kettering, MD Anderson, and the Cleveland Clinic, among others, to receive the specialized care they need.
In the last five or six years, however, a tremendous investment has been made in Florida’s medical infrastructure—both in physical facilities and talent—that could raise its stature on the medical tourism market. In the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, South Florida has emerged as a magnet for business, tech, and financial services companies. This migration has fueled a notable rise in healthcare investment across the region.
For example, Ken Griffin, Citadel’s founder and CEO, made a substantial philanthropic gift to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital to build a five-story surgical tower and support its four major institutes advancing pediatric care. He also donated a significant amount to the Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center at Mount Sinai, which opened in May 2026. HCA Florida has made heavy investments in its Mercy campus and their trauma hospital at HCA Kendall. The Helen & Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital was also made possible by significant philanthropic gifts. More recently, Herbert Wertheim made a transformational gift to advance Baptist Health’s Miami Cancer Institute.

| Living the Dream in Miami: Dr. Julie Kantor’s Journey of Service, Mentorship, and Medical Excellence
For Dr. Julie Kantor, M.D., FAAP, becoming the incoming 2026 president of the Miami-Dade County Medical Association is both a professional milestone and a deeply personal homecoming.
A lifelong Miamian, Dr. Kantor has built a career that reflects excellence in pediatric emergency medicine, medical education, physician advocacy, and community service. Her upcoming presidency brings together the many threads of that work: caring for children and families, preparing the next generation of physicians, and helping strengthen organized medicine in the community that shaped her.
“Going to medical school in Miami was so important to me because I wanted to be able to give back to the community that raised me,” Dr. Kantor says. “Being president of the Miami-Dade County Medical Association feels like the summit of all of that for me.”
The Miami-Dade County Medical Association has served as a trusted voice for physicians and patients in South Florida since 1903. Representing a diverse network of physicians, residents, and medical students, MDCMA is committed to advancing healthcare through advocacy, education, leadership, physician wellness, and community service. The association champions the interests of the medical profession while addressing the evolving healthcare needs of Miami-Dade County’s multicultural communities. Through collaboration, innovation, and public engagement, it continues to shape the future of medicine in South Florida and protect the integrity of the physician-patient relationship.
Dr. Kantor’s path to leadership reflects that mission. She began her academic journey at Miami-Dade Community College, graduating summa cum laude, and continued at Florida International University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, also summa cum laude.

Mount Sinai Medical Center Study Finds Music Therapy Eases Anxiety, Fatigue, and Pain for Patients During Cancer Treatment
Peer-reviewed research from the Irma and Norman Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center reinforces music therapy’s role in whole-person cancer care
June 15, 2026— A new study from Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Irma and Norman Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center found that music therapy delivered during chemotherapy and immunotherapy infusions was associated with significant improvements in patients’ anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain, and overall sense of wellbeing. The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Supportive Care in Cancer.
The study followed 55 adult cancer patients during active infusion treatment. Each took part in sessions led by a board-certified music therapist, choosing between active engagement, such as singing or playing a keyboard, or receptive listening and guided relaxation. Patients reported how they felt before and after each session across five measures. Improvements were consistent and significant across every measure, and held steady across multiple visits.

Three Palm Beach Health Network Hospitals Implement Baby Footprint Safety System
Only Hospitals Between Miami and Ft. Pierce to Use Footprint Safety System
June 15, 2026 –Three Palm Beach Health Network hospitals, Good Samaritan Medical Center, St. Mary’s Medical Center, and West Boca Medical Center, have recently installed a new and innovative Infant Safety System developed by CertaScan Technologies. They are the only hospitals between Miami and Ft. Pierce to use this technology. The proprietary system allows each hospital to capture high resolution newborn footprints which can be used for precise identification in situations like an abduction, lost baby or natural disaster.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) recommends the Newborn Safety System in hospitals.
The system is safe for use on babies and provides outstanding footprint quality. The digital footprints and security photo can be stored efficiently in the newborn’s electronic medical record. And, much like fingerprints, footprints are a biometric, unique to each baby, so they can be used for identification throughout a lifetime.

MAYO: Researchers identify new kidney pathway with help from 1940s-era drug, may improve polycystic kidney disease treatment
JUNE 16, 2026 – JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Mayo Clinic researchers have identified a previously unrecognized way the kidneys regulate water balance — an advance that could lead to improved treatments for polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and other disorders. The study, led by Fouad Chebib, M.D., a nephrologist at Mayo Clinic, is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
The findings build on decades of scientific understanding by revealing an additional pathway the kidney uses to control water balance. Until now, the body’s ability to concentrate urine — and prevent dehydration — has been thought to depend primarily on the hormone vasopressin. Dr. Chebib’s team discovered an alternative mechanism that operates independently of that system.
“The kidney’s ability to regulate water is one of the most fundamental processes in the body,” Dr. Chebib says. “It’s not every day that you uncover a new way it carries out that function.”
Polycystic kidney disease is a common inherited condition that causes fluid-filled cysts to grow in the kidneys over time, gradually reducing kidney function and often leading to kidney failure. It affects millions of people worldwide, including an estimated 140,000 people in the U.S. with the most common form, autosomal dominant PKD (ADPKD). Many patients eventually require dialysis or a kidney transplant.

NIH: For adults with prediabetes, lifestyle intervention lowered risk of developing multiple chronic conditions
NIH-supported, long-term clinical trial found no difference between metformin and placebo.
JUNE 15, 2026 – A clinical trial supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that adults with prediabetes assigned to a lifestyle intervention had a significantly lower risk of developing multiple chronic health conditions (known as multimorbidity) over time than those assigned to a placebo. This study, which followed participants for over two decades, also found that participants assigned to receive metformin did not experience a statistically significant reduction in multimorbidity risk. The findings, published in JAMA, highlight the lasting benefits of lifestyle programs that may lower risk of the development of chronic conditions.
“Multimorbidity is a common issue, and few interventions have been found to prevent or delay developing multiple chronic conditions,” said Marcel Salive, M.D., first author of the study, from NIH’s National Institute on Aging (NIA). “Our work showing that healthy lifestyle intervention can significantly lower the burden of multimorbidity is a step forward in addressing this growing problem.”

NIH launches new office to advance human-based research and reduce animal use
JUNE 15 2026 – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced the creation of the Office of Research Innovation, Validation, and Application, or ORIVA, to speed the development and use of human-based research technologies across NIH.
ORIVA will coordinate NIH-wide efforts to develop, validate and scale New Approach Methodologies, or NAMs, including 3D human tissue models, computational tools and other animal-free methods that can better reflect human biology. The office will also serve as a hub for interagency coordination and regulatory translation.
“Complex computational models, 3D human tissue models, and other emerging technologies have improved by leaps and bounds in recent years and may hold the key to a more effective research enterprise,” said NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, M.D., Ph.D. “By strategically capitalizing on these tools and encouraging further innovation, NIH aims to steer biomedical research in this direction.”

AHA: New Poll Highlights Role of Insurers in Rising Costs as Hospitals Advance Affordability Solutions
JUNE 12 2026- Healthcare affordability remains one of the top concerns for Americans. A Morning Consult poll of 2,000 voters released this week by the Coalition to Strengthen America’s Healthcare, of which the AHA is a founding member, underscores what patients and families experience every day: Corporate health insurance companies are the primary driver of higher costs and barriers to care.
Americans Blame Corporate Health Insurers for Rising Healthcare Costs and Barriers to Care
Specifically, 47% of voters said corporate health insurance companies are most responsible for rising healthcare costs, followed by the federal government (36%) and drug companies (34%).
These findings matter. They reflect the real-world experiences of patients and families navigating a system where coverage decisions are too often shaped by corporate policies rather than clinical judgment.

CMS Proposed Rule Locks in Lower Prices and Fosters Innovation for the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program
JUNE 11 2026 – A new proposal from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) would establish a permanent framework for the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program (“Negotiation Program”), creating a more transparent and sustainable process for lowering drug costs for millions of Medicare beneficiaries. The proposed rule would also create greater long-term certainty for drug manufacturers that participate in negotiations. It includes policies for negotiating and renegotiating high-cost, single-source drugs beginning with initial price applicability year 2029, while continuing to support innovation and strengthen the program.
“This proposed rule lowers drug prices for seniors and ensures continued savings,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “We are moving from annual updates to a permanent, predictable framework. This approach puts patients first, strengthens Medicare, and protects the innovation pipeline that delivers future cures.”

An Evening of Hope Celebrating 25 Years of Compassion and Saving Lives
For 25 years, A Safe Haven for Newborns has stood as a beacon of hope for mothers in crisis and a lifeline for vulnerable newborns. What began as Nick’s deeply personal journey to heal a broken heart and honor the memory of his beloved wife, Gloria, following her tragic passing, has grown into an internationally recognized organization dedicated to preventing infant abandonment and providing support, counseling, and critical resources to women facing the overwhelming reality of an unplanned pregnancy. From its beginnings, the mission has been rooted in compassion, dignity, and love — offering hope, protection, and a path forward during life’s most difficult moments.
Over the past quarter century, countless lives have been touched through the organization’s unwavering commitment to offering safe, legal, and anonymous options for mothers seeking help. Through advocacy, education, community partnerships, and around-the-clock support, A Safe Haven for Newborns has continued to remind women that they are never alone. To date, 441 newborns have been given a chance at life — 431 in Florida; nine in other states, and one in Honduras.
This milestone anniversary is more than a celebration of years — it is a celebration of lives, second chances, and the power of compassion to change the future. We invite you to join us in celebrating our Silver Jubilee by visiting our website and selecting a sponsorship opportunity. Or, contact Nick Silverio at safehaven@asafehavenfornewborns.com; 305-882-1304 x103 for more information.
