Tampa General Expands Artificial Intelligence Capabilities with New Ambient Listening Technology for Nurses
Building upon positive momentum from the academic health system’s ambient listening technology for physicians, Tampa General is deploying a new AI solution purpose-built for nursing.
June 23, 2025 –Tampa General Hospital (TGH) today announced the rollout of Microsoft’s ambient listening capabilities for nurses embedded in Epic’s Rover mobile nursing application. These capabilities aim to reduce the administrative burden on nurses, who studies have shown can spend as much as 15 percent of their shifts on documentation alone.[1]
The deployment of this new solution, tailored to address the unique needs of bedside nurses, is the academic health system’s latest initiative to harness the power of AI to increase productivity and job satisfaction while enhancing patient experience and quality of care.
“Our guiding philosophy has always been to put our team members first, so they feel engaged, supported and empowered to show up at their best for our patients,” said Wendi Goodson-Celerin, executive vice president and chief nursing executive at Tampa General. “Microsoft’s ambient listening technology can give nurses back hours of time per shift that they’d ordinarily spend manually entering data into a computer, and the research shows that this is time they would prefer to spend at the bedside with their patients, upskilling newer nurses and honing their craft. In this way, it is giving nurses the gift of more capacity to what they were trained to do, and what no one else does better.”

SMH Orthopedic Team Using Mixed Reality Technology to Optimize Hip Replacement Surgery
June 25, 2025 – Led by orthopedic surgeon Edward Stolarski, MD, Sarasota Memorial Hospital is using the first FDA-cleared mixed reality navigation system to optimize total hip replacement.
Cleared by the FDA in 2024, HipInsight’s 2.0 is the latest intra-operative guidance system developed to help orthopedic surgeons customize hip implant placement, verify accuracy during surgery, and anticipate and safeguard against potential complications, such as dislocations.
Using HipInsight’s mixed reality platform, Dr. Stolarski uses head-mounted Microsoft HoloLens 2 mixed reality glasses to overlay 3D holograms of a patient’s pelvis onto the hip during surgery. The enhanced visualization enables him to precisely plan custom implants to fit each patient’s unique anatomy.
Dr. Stolarksi has used the system in more than 100 hip replacements with promising results. He said the advanced technology promotes more precise positioning, especially in complex cases that involve arthritis, hip dysplasia and other complicating conditions.

Cleveland Clinic Standard of Care Enhances Trigeminal Neuralgia Patient Recovery
An estimated 15,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia each year – a condition that causes recurrent, shock-like facial pain. These symptoms can be debilitating for some, with around 25-40 percent of patients choosing surgery within two years of the onset of symptoms.
The team at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Headache and Facial Pain Center implemented an innovative standard of care, called the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol, to help patients undergoing surgery for TN experience faster recovery and relief. Today, the hospital is able to discharge patients in less than 24 hours with minimal pain and no hearing impairment.
TN is a chronic neuropathic disorder caused by pressure on the trigeminal nerve. Of the three types of TN – classic, secondary and idiopathic – classic TN accounts for about 80% of cases. Microvascular decompression (MVD) is the most effective and durable treatment for classic TN. Ninety percent of patients at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital achieve pain relief for as long as 10 years with this procedure.

Mayo Clinic researchers capture first signs of ovarian cancer risk
JUNE 24, 2025 – Little is known about what causes ovarian cancer, and there is no way to detect it early yet. About 75% of the time when someone is diagnosed with ovarian cancer, it has already progressed to stage 3 or stage 4, which means it has spread to other parts of the body. Mayo Clinic physicians, researchers and patients had been working together to learn more about this devastating disease when a 22-year-old patient, who has two rare genetic conditions that dramatically elevate lifetime cancer risk, came to Mayo Clinic.
The patient carries a hereditary BRCA2 mutation, which is one of the genes that causes hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome, and a hereditary TP53 mutation, which causes Li-Fraumeni syndrome.
At Mayo Clinic, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Imaging also revealed she had an ovarian cyst. Although the cyst was benign, she chose to have a mastectomy and hysterectomy with removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes, a procedure called a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, because of her elevated cancer risk. Upon further examination, her Mayo Clinic physician and research team detected early, hidden changes in the cells lining her fallopian tubes, revealing signals that may point to the first signs of ovarian cancer before symptoms or visible lesions appear.
“Our team glimpsed a rare and revealing phenomenon in epithelial biology, uncovered through the cells of a young patient living with profoundly high-risk genetic conditions. Using cutting-edge, single-cell technologies, we traced how her epithelial cells were developmentally altered in ways that signaled a high risk for lethal ovarian cancer. These insights could pave the way for future strategies to detect the disease in its earliest, precancerous stages when prevention is still possible,” says Nagarajan Kannan, Ph.D., director of the Stem Cell and Cancer Biology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic and co-lead author of this study published in JCO Precision Oncology.
