BROWARD HEALTH’S S&P GLOBAL RATINGS JUMPS TWO NOTCHES UPGRADING BOND RATING TO ‘A+’
April 28, 2025 – Broward Health is pleased to announce that S&P Global Ratings has upgraded its long-term rating on Broward Health’s 2017B revenue bonds from ‘A-‘ to ‘A+’. Jumping two ratings at S&P is a rare achievement, particularly in today’s healthcare economic landscape, and underscores significant improvements in Broward Health’s financial stability and operational performance. The outlook remains stable.
“The upgrade reflects the S&P Global Ratings’ view of Broward Health’s strengthened enterprise profile, coupled with the continued trend of solid financial performance and improved balance-sheet metrics. The outlook additionally reflects Broward Health’s strong balance sheet and very favorable debt profile,” according to S&P, which attributed these improvements to volume growth and operational efficiencies.
“This substantial, two-jump upgrade in our S&P rating highlights our dedication to financial excellence and our resilience in a constantly evolving healthcare environment, particularly in a time when many health systems are facing challenges,” said Shane Strum, President & CEO of Broward Health. “It not only reflects our robust financial strategies and adaptability, but also demonstrates our resilience and ability to thrive in a competitive and often turbulent healthcare environment.”

ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight: Arlen “A.J.” Ross
As a youngster, Arlen “A.J.” Ross knew what he wanted to do as a career, and it was NOT go into healthcare. “Growing up, my mother was a pharmacist, and my father was in healthcare administration. I told both of them I would never follow in their footsteps,” Ross said, then added with a chuckle, “Lo and behold, I almost identically followed the pathway my father set.”
That pathway has Ross currently established as Director of Business Operations for Baptist Health, Palm Beach Market. Of his responsibilities, he said, “I do a little of everything for Baptist in the North Region, from emergency medical services outreach to all of our fire rescue and EMS agencies, to integration for the North Region, to different operations and special projects. Literally, it depends on the day and what is needed to be accomplished.” He said he’s also currently serving as interim director for environmental services, transport services, telecommunications, and linen services.
Ross’ father was a hospital administrator in New York (and was an EMT), who had the responsibility for ambulatory services, including the Emergency Department and Ambulance Services. Ross himself began working in fire rescue as a critical care paramedic firefighter – “exactly what I told my father I would not do” – then worked in a hospital as a paramedic. After furthering his education, he went into different operational aspects and worked his way up to his current position.

Nursing 2025: No Relief in Sight as Burnout, Stress and Short Staffing Persist
New National Survey from Cross Country and FAU Reveals Worsening Crisis and Urgent Call to Action
BOCA RATON, Fla. – April 29, 2025 – Cross Country Healthcare (NASDAQ: CCRN), a leader in workforce solutions and tech-enabled staffing, recruitment and advisory services, today released its fourth annual survey, “Beyond the Bedside: The State of Nursing in 2025” report. In partnership with Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, the study paints a sobering picture of a profession at a breaking point – where stress, burnout and chronic short staffing continue to jeopardize the well-being of nurses and the quality of patient care nationwide.
The findings are drawn from 2,600 voices across the nursing profession, including seasoned RNs, LPNs, APRNs, and students preparing to enter the field. Despite the spotlight placed on nurses throughout the pandemic and the promises of reform, little progress has been made – and the consequences are becoming impossible to ignore.
“Nurses are the backbone of our health care system, yet they’re still being asked to carry an unsustainable load,” said John A. Martins, president & CEO of Cross Country. “This year’s report is not just data – it’s a resounding cry for change. If we don’t act now, we risk losing an entire generation of dedicated professionals.”
Key findings from the 2025 survey:
-65% of nurses report high levels of stress and burnout.
-Only 60% say they would choose nursing again if given the choice. -Top stressors: short staffing, inadequate pay, lack of leadership support and patient abuse. -67% of student nurses are already concerned about managing their workload. -Despite the challenges, 82% of students express excitement about their future in nursing. -Profession top demands: improved staffing levels, stronger leadership, flexible schedules and meaningful recognition.
“Our data reveals a troubling paradox,” said Cameron Duncan, Ph.D., dean of the FAU Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. “While students are hopeful and eager to begin practicing as a nurse, our experienced workforce is sending distress signals loud and clear. This moment requires bold, coordinated action at every level – from nurse educators to hospital executives to national policy makers.”

HCA FLORIDA UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL HOSTS HEARTWARMING NICU REUNION FOR GRADAUTES AND FAMILIES
April 28, 2025 – HCA Florida University Hospital welcomed more than 120 families back to the hospital on Saturday, April 26, for its first-ever Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) reunion since opening its doors in 2021. The joyful event brought together former NICU graduates, their parents, and the team of nurses, physicians, and support staff who once cared for them during their earliest and most fragile days.
“Our NICU team provides extraordinary care to our tiniest and most vulnerable patients, and it’s incredibly meaningful to see them come back healthy and strong,” said Neva Spencer, Chief Nursing Officer at HCA Florida University Hospital. “This is why we do what we do – to give our families hope, healing, and happy futures.”
Board-certified neonatologists lead the Level III NICU. Infants also receive care from other specialists, including neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists. HCA Florida University Hospital also features subspecialties in heart care, neurological care, endocrinology, ophthalmology, orthopedic and ear, nose and throat (ENT) care.
In just over three years, the hospital’s NICU has built a strong reputation for excellence. Earlier this year, HCA Healthcare recognized HCA Florida University Hospital’s NICU as a 2024 Unit of Distinction Top Performer — earning the title of the #1 NICU across the entire HCA Healthcare system.

California Firefighter ‘Living the Best of These Last Months’ on Hospice Care
VITAS patient Jim Forrester and his wife share the difference that hospice care made in their lives.
April 28, 2025 – IRVINE, CA — “Hospice is not something that means death right away. It means health and happiness,” said Debbie Forrester, spouse and patient caregiver for former firefighter Jim Forrester of Orange County, California.
In a new video, launched during Patient Experience Week, VITAS Healthcare shares the story of a patient with terminal cancer whose life was dramatically impacted by the help of his hospice care team. Within a week of being cared for by the interdisciplinary team at VITAS, Mr. Forrester, who had been depressed and was unable to walk, began enjoying time with his grandchildren and even riding his bike again.
Mr. Forrester was diagnosed with squamous cell skin cancer, a condition that spread to other parts of his body, causing him intense pain and discomfort.
Every day I wake up is a new day, and I enjoy the day.
“He was depressed and cried on the couch three or four times a day,” his wife recalled. “Watching him in such excruciating pain was very hard. I thought, there’s got to be a better way.”
When a physician determined Mr. Forrester was hospice eligible, meaning his life expectancy was six months or less, his wife knew he wanted to spend that time at home. The Forresters selected hospice care through VITAS.

Study finds long-term health benefits from bariatric surgery and liver transplant
APRIL 30, 2025 — Simultaneous bariatric surgery and liver transplant for patients who are severely obese is safe and improves long-term health outcomes, according to a recent Mayo Clinic study. This combined approach offers a needed solution for these patients who are often denied a lifesaving liver transplant due to their weight.
The 10-year study, published in the Journal of Hepatology, compared patients who received only a liver transplant with those who underwent both a liver transplant and bariatric surgery.
The combined approach resulted in sustained weight loss, reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and lower risk of fatty liver disease recurrence. Importantly, the combined procedure posed no additional risks compared to liver transplant alone.

In separate procedures, SMH interventional cardiologists Ricardo Yayura, MD, Jeffrey Rossi, MD, and Fabio Lima, MD, completed transcatheter tricuspid valve replacements (TTVR) on four patients who had been suffering from tricuspid regurgitation for some time, but were too high-risk for surgical repair or replacement due to age or the anatomy of their heart. All four patients received the new valves in a less invasive, catheter-based approach in SMH’s cardiac catheterization lab.

Existing Treatments May Help Fight Symptoms of Severe Form of Muscular Dystrophy, New Research Suggests
APRIL 30, 2025 – A new study led by researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) suggests that currently available therapies may help control chronic muscle inflammation in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a severe condition that leads to muscle weakness and premature death. The study, published in PNAS, identifies new mechanisms that drive chronic muscle inflammation in a disease model of a DMD. Researchers believe that targeting these mechanisms with existing therapies could help reduce inflammation and support muscle function.
DMD is caused by a mutation in the dystrophin gene, which produces a large protein essential for stabilizing muscle cell membranes that help protect muscle fibers. Without dystrophin, muscle damage occurs and builds, leading to persistent inflammation and fibrosis (scarring). The condition primarily affects boys—occurring in about 1 in 5,000 live male births—and leads to premature death due to respiratory and cardiac muscle weakness. There is currently no cure.
