MEMORIAL REGIONAL HOSPITAL BECOMES FLORIDA’S FIRST RESUSCITATION CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE
April 22, 2024 – Memorial Regional Hospital is the first hospital in the state of Florida to become a Resuscitation Center of Excellence (RCOE), meeting over 30 required evidence-based criteria in cardiac arrest care. Memorial Healthcare System signed the program attestation alongside the Association of EMS Medical Directors and chiefs from surrounding Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies.
As part of the program, Memorial commits to expand and enhance cardiac arrest care through collaborative efforts with EMS agencies to offer patients advanced therapies that have been shown to improve survival, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and rapid, around-the-clock interventional cardiology coverage for lifesaving procedures.
Dr. Ben Abo, President of the Florida Association of EMS Medical Directors (FAEMSMD) states, “by developing a progressive and aggressive Center of Excellence, it provides a strong basis to improve cardiac care and collaboration statewide.”
The chance of surviving a cardiac arrest outside of the hospital environment is relatively uncommon, at around 10% of cases. However, through EMS collaboration allowing access to these treatments and by improving bystander CPR and AED use rates, the likelihood of survival can be significantly improved. For this reason, the program also aims to integrate regular bystander CPR courses into the community, alongside providing extra educational materials centered on preventing cardiac diseases and using AEDs.

CLEVELAND CLINIC APPOINTS LAGOS-BASED REPRESENTATIVE TO FACILITATE ACCESS TO CARE FOR NIGERIAN PATIENTS
April 22, 2024 – CLEVELAND, OH AND LAGOS, NIGERIA:As part of its continued efforts to ensure greater access to quality care for patients around the world, Cleveland Clinic is broadening its network of in-country representatives to include Nigeria.
Cleveland Clinic’s in-country representatives are local citizens with in-depth knowledge of the latest healthcare treatments available. They are able to remove language, cultural and logistical barriers to ensure a smooth patient journey for their compatriots.
Cleveland Clinic is known for pioneering medical breakthroughs, including coronary artery bypass surgery, the first face transplant and first uterus transplant in the United States, as well as world firsts including deep brain stimulation surgery to restore function after stroke and the development of a vaccine to prevent deadly triple-negative breast cancer, currently in a phase one trial. Integrating clinical and hospital care with research and education, the health system has locations across the United States, and in Toronto, Canada; London, UK; and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
In collaboration with Nigeria’s 6334 Business Services, OlufisayoOkunsanya has been appointed as the Nigerian in-country representative for Cleveland Clinic.
Olufisayo has had considerable healthcare management experience and is the lead consultant at the 6334 Business Services.
“Nigeria is witnessing a rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases and has developed an impressive health infrastructure to address this,” Olufisayo said. “With that being said, there are still some gaps in complex care, such as neurosurgery and new treatments for diseases that are being developed and trialed by global institutions such as Cleveland Clinic.
“My role will be to help Nigerian patients who need or want to travel to Cleveland Clinic locations for care, but who are concerned about practical issues and language or cultural barriers,” Olufisayo said. “I can educate them about treatment options and provide end-to-end support to ensure the entire process runs as smoothly as possible. I understand patients’ needs, speak their language, and can advocate for them while making sure they are fully informed about their options.”
With 24/7 access to Cleveland Clinic’s Global Patient Services department, the in-country representatives are able to connect patients with various medical experts. They can arrange online consultations, follow-ups and second opinions, as well as in-person treatment at the most convenient Cleveland Clinic hospital.
Due to a strong demand in growth for its services, Cleveland Clinic has increased the number of countries supported by in-country reps over the past couple of years, with 13 reps now covering 15 markets globally.

FAU RECEIVES GRANT TO EXAMINE ROLE OF PET DOGS ON MILITARY ADOLESCENTS
HABRI Awards FAU C-P.A.W.W. to Investigate Pet Dog Ownership on Adolescent Resilience and Well-being
BOCA RATON, Fla. – April 24, 2024 – Florida Atlantic University Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing’s Canines Providing Assistance to Wounded Warriors (C-P.A.W.W.) has received a new grant from the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) for research that investigates the contribution of pet dog ownership to resilience and well-being in adolescent children of military families.
The grant was awarded to a team of researchers led by Laurie Martinez, Ph.D., an assistant professor, FAU College of Nursing; and co-led by Cheryl A. Krause-Parello, Ph.D., associate vice president for research, FAU Division of Research and a research professor in the College of Nursing.
This important study will provide insight into how pet dogs support well-being and resilience in adolescents while a parent or guardian is in the National Guard, Reserve, is a veteran or on active duty. Adolescents in military families face ubiquitous teen stressors and unique military challenges such as parental deployment and frequent relocations. Dog ownership is suggested as a contextual resource of strength to counter the effects of adolescent military-specific stressors and promote positive outcomes.
“With approximately 66 percent of households in the United States owning a pet, family military pet dogs are an understudied innovative resource that may mitigate military-connected adolescent stress and nurture resilience and well-being,” said Martinez, principal investigator of the study. “Exploring how pet dogs can serve as conduits to better mental health outcomes opens new pathways for daily health promotion.”

AUGMEDIX LAUNCHES INDUSTRY’S FIRST FULLY-AUTOMATED, GENAI-POWERED, MEDICAL DOCUMENTATION PRODUCT FOR EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS
Following incubation with HCA Healthcare EDs, Augmedix announces the general availability of Augmedix Go in emergency departments
San Francisco, CA – April 24, 2024 – Augmedix (Nasdaq: AUGX), a leader in ambient AI medical documentation and data solutions, today announced the general availability of Augmedix Go for emergency departments (EDs), marking the launch of the industry’s first fully-automated, generative AI (GenAI) powered medical documentation product for EDs across the country.
The launch incorporates learnings from a pilot program with HCA Healthcare (NYSE: HCA), one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers. As part of the pilot, ED physicians in four HCA Healthcare hospitals utilized Augmedix Go to automate medical documentation, with the product instantaneously drafting their medical notes from patient visits.
“The work we’ve done on Augmedix Go in the ED demonstrates how the Augmedix team has worked to build a strong, long-term relationship with HCA Healthcare and provide us high-quality, successful deployments,” said Michael J. Schlosser, MD, MBA, FAANS, SVP, Care Transformation and Innovation, HCA Healthcare.
Augmedix Go aims to improve the patient experience at the point of care, increase productivity by improving documentation quality, reduce the cognitive burden of note taking by providers, and shorten chart closure time. The clinician feedback and data garnered from the pilot supported Augmedix Go’s ability to achieve these objectives.
“Using Augmedix allowed me to spend more time with my patients and less time in front of my computer. I was also able to essentially eliminate charting after my shift was over, which makes a huge difference,” said Veronica L. Cassese Klasko, MHSc, MMS, PA-C, physician assistant at HCA Florida Trinity Hospital.
Augmedix’s extensive experience in acute care settings with its other products helped it to fine-tune its AI technology to address the unique challenges of clinical documentation in the ED such as multiple interactions, documenting medical decision making, re-evaluations and progress updates. The workflow in the ED requires technology that can accommodate complex conversations and a plurality of recordings capturing multiple, non-sequential interactions with a single patient. All of which occurs in a typically noisy environment.

NIH TO INCREASE PAY LEVELS FOR PRE- AND POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARS AT GRANTEE INSTITUTIONS
Increase applies to more than 17,000 research trainees and includes additional funds for childcare and training-related expenses.
April 23 , 2024 – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will increase annual pay levels for predoctoral and postdoctoral scholars at NIH-funded external institutions who are recipients of the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA). Predoctoral scholars will receive an approximate 4% increase in their pay level bringing it to $28,224, and postdoctoral scholars will receive an approximate increase of 8%, with pay levels beginning at $61,008 and upwardly adjusted based on years of experience. NIH aims to increase these pay levels over the next five years. Eligible recipients also will receive a $500 increase in subsidies for childcare and an additional $200 for training-related expenses. The updated fiscal year 2024 pay levels are informed by recommendations from the NIH Advisory Committee to the Director to better attract and retain postdoctoral scholars. The new NRSA pay levels incorporate the largest year-over-year update since 2017.
“I have accepted the recommendations of the report on this important issue that was provided by my advisory group. NIH and our grantee institutions must invest in pre- and postdoctoral scholars to ensure the future of the biomedical research workforce and enterprise remains strong and globally competitive,” said NIH Director Monica M. Bertagnolli, M.D. “This revision of pay levels for NRSA recipients is just a first step toward reaffirming their value and ensuring they are appropriately compensated, and I am hopeful these continued efforts help us attract and retain our nation’s brightest scientific minds.”
While the amended pay levels do not reach the full funding increase recommended by the advisory group, NIH selected the current plan to allow for an immediate pay increase without drastic cuts to the number of available NRSA awards, though a small reduction in the number of positions is expected. The increase is based on current NIH funding levels, which remained flat in the constrained budget environment. Pending the availability of funds through future appropriations, NIH plans to further increase stipend funding levels over the next three to five years to reach the advisory group’s recommended starting pay level of $70,000 annually for postdoctoral NRSAs. Additionally, NIH-funded institutions may supplement NRSA recipients’ new pay levels with additional, non-NIH funds and/or benefits.
