Dr. Christopher Chang New BCMA President
After growing up in Hong Kong and spending considerable time in places such as California, Washington, D.C., and Delaware, Dr. Christopher Chang made South Florida his home and will begin a new chapter on January 31st as president of the Broward County Medical Association (BCMA).
Dr. Chang completed his undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral studies in chemistry at Georgetown University before pursuing pediatric residency training at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. While his early academic interests were rooted in chemistry, his clinical path came into focus after an encounter with an immunologist at the University of California, Davis, who encouraged him to pursue fellowship training in allergy and immunology.
Dr. Chang completed his fellowship at UC Davis, remained on faculty, and opened a solo practice in Crescent City, California, where he spent nearly two decades balancing academic medicine and private practice. As reimbursement pressures increased and regulatory demands intensified, he began exploring new professional opportunities that eventually led him across the country, and ultimately to Florida.
Nearly eight years ago, Dr. Chang joined Memorial Healthcare System to help rebuild its allergy and immunology division. What began as a pediatric service expanded to include adult care, pediatric rheumatology, and ongoing recruitment to further strengthen the division. Today, he serves as Chief of the Division of Immunology, Allergy, and Pediatric Rheumatology at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Memorial Healthcare System, roles he describes as both challenging and deeply rewarding.
In addition to his clinical leadership, Dr. Chang has devoted more than 30 years to medical education. At Memorial, he launched the Transitional Year Residency Program in 2022 and the Allergy/Immunology Fellowship Program the following year.

The Florida Hospital Association Celebrates $209 Million in Federal Funding to Transform Health Care in Florida’s Rural Communities
~Investment Will Improve Health Outcomes in Rural Areas through Increased Access, Strengthened Workforce and Advanced Technologies ~
January 5, 2026 – The federal government last week announced that Florida has been awarded more than $209 million for FY 2026 from the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) to strengthen rural health care in our state. The Florida Hospital Association (FHA), which had advocated for the funding, praised the federal government’s major investment in Florida, celebrating its impact on communities across the Sunshine State.
“Florida’s rural hospitals are lifelines in their communities, providing access to care for the families who live in rural areas,” said Mary C. Mayhew, president and CEO of FHA. “This critical funding not only sustains these essential lifelines but strengthens them. By building a stronger workforce, implementing modern technologies and establishing collaborative partnerships across rural care providers, we can better meet the needs of every community from the Panhandle to the Glades.”
Facing rising costs and low occupancy, five of Florida’s rural hospitals have closed during the last 20 years, and three have converted to emergency or urgent care. The long-term viability of rural hospitals is a serious concern and a top priority of the Florida Hospital Association, given the important role they play in providing access to timely care.
When the federal government created the Rural Health Transformation Program as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill, signed on July 4, 2025, FHA partnered with other stakeholders to develop coordinated feedback for Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) to consider as part of its application development. More than 60 pages of data, analysis, and recommendations were ultimately provided to assist the agency in its work.

Study: ADRIATIC Clinical Trial Results Suggest Durvalumab May Offer a New Path in Small Cell Lung Cancer Care
Immune checkpoint inhibitor extended survival for limited-stage SCLC patients, but cost raises critical questions about sustainability, prevention and access
Jan. 9, 2026 – A new study suggests that the immune checkpoint inhibitor, durvalumab, may offer new treatment options for patients living with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). However, its cost raises questions about sustainability, prevention and access. The findings, published in the Dec. 19, 2025, issue of JCO Global Oncology, are accompanied by an editorial, titled “Durvalumab in Limited-Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer: Clinical Triumph and Toward Sustainable Value.”
SCLC is among the most aggressive forms of lung cancer, accounting for about 15% of cases. Known for its rapid progression and poor prognosis, it has long been treated with a standard regimen of chemotherapy and radiation—a formula that has barely changed in decades. Five-year survival rates hover around 25% to 30%, leaving patients and families with limited hope.
Now, immunotherapy is rewriting the narrative. Durvalumab has emerged as a promising addition to the treatment landscape for limited-stage disease. Backed by the ADRIATIC trial, this therapy offers something patients have desperately needed: more time.
“Durvalumab represents a turning point in maintenance therapy for SCLC,” said Chinmay Jani, M.D., first author on the study and chief fellow in hematology and oncology at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “We’re seeing survival gains that were unimaginable just a few years ago.”
The ADRIATIC trial evaluated durvalumab as maintenance therapy following chemoradiation. Results were striking: overall survival extended to 66.1 months, compared with 57.8 months for standard care. Progression-free survival also improved—40.2 months versus 31.8 months.

Hospital team turns nurse’s hospital stay into an anniversary celebration
January 9, 2026 – What began as a stressful hospital stay for Angela, one of our dedicated nurses, became an unforgettable celebration of love thanks to the compassion and creativity of our care team.
Angela was admitted for severe abdominal pain and underwent surgery just as her wedding anniversary approached. “I was heartbroken, thinking I’d miss celebrating our special day,” Angela shared. But the team had other plans. “They said, ‘We can take care of that,’” she recalled.
And they did. Angela and her husband, Christopher, were surprised with a beautifully prepared steak and shrimp dinner right in her hospital room. “It was delicious,” Angela said. “They came in and told me to cover my head and not peek… then they had it all set up. It was so nice.” The real gift, though, was how it made them feel: Christopher said it was the first time he’d seen Angela smile all week.

Services include shelter; referrals for counseling, prenatal care, and transportation to medical appointments; support for abuse and suicide prevention; and newborn necessities and adoption information. If she decides that surrender is the best option for herself and her baby, she can safely place her newborn in the caring arms of a trained professional at any hospital, fire station, or EMS station displaying the A Safe Haven for Newborns sign. “This is a profoundly emotional moment for both the mother and the person receiving the infant,” said retired firefighter Janice Matos of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Sarasota Memorial Joins Clinical Trial for Patients with Aortic Valve Disease
January 8, 2026 – Calcification of the aortic valve is the leading cause of heart valve disease in older adults, and currently, there are no approved medications to slow its progression. Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute is working to change that.
The new KATALYST-AV trial, sponsored by Kardigan, Inc aims to evaluate whether the investigational medication ataciguat can slow the buildup of calcium in the aortic valve in adults with moderate calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS).
Led locally by interventional cardiologist Ricardo Yaryura, MD, the study will also assess the safety, tolerability and metabolism of the medication- how it is processed in the body.
The phase 3 clinical study will enroll an estimated 1,400 patients across approximately 100 sites worldwide. If proven safe and effective, Ataciguat could become the first pharmacologic therapy to slow the progression of aortic valve calcium deposition in adults with CAVS.

January 8, 2026— Guardant Health, Inc. MD Anderson and SOPHiA GENETICS announce strategic collaboration to accelerate AI-driven precision oncology
January 7, 2026 – The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and SOPHiA GENETICS today announced a strategic collaboration that unites SOPHiA GENETICS’ AI-powered analytics with MD Anderson’s clinical and scientific expertise to accelerate data-driven cancer care through new tools that can accurately analyze, interpret and translate diagnostic results into clinical practice.

Advancing Cancer Care Through Precision Medicine
Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, will host its Fourth Annual Precision Oncology Symposium on January 30-31, 2026, at Loews Coral Gables Hotel.
The one-and-a-half-day event will explore molecular and targeted therapies transforming the treatment of solid tumors, including lung, breast, brain and gastrointestinal cancers. Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the symposium offers continuing education credits for physicians and healthcare professionals.
