| GENEROUS DONATION ESTABLISHES NEW UROLOGY CENTER AT JUPITER MEDICAL CENTER
The gift will expand access to a highly in-demand medical specialty
April 4, 2024 – Jupiter Medical Center is pleased to announce a generous donation from Joe and Barbara Charles to establish the “Joe and Barbara Charles Center for Urology.” The donation will enable the independent, not-for-profit hospital to create more access to urological care by recruiting a team of highly specialized physicians, including a urologic oncologist, and acquiring additional state-of-the-art technology. The multidisciplinary team will specialize in general urology and urological cancers.
The new Center will expand access to an extremely in-demand medical specialty – it has been reported that 50 percent of men and women will experience a urological condition in their lifetime. Through extensive research and planning, Jupiter Medical Center identified a growing need for specialized urologists, especially in Palm Beach and Martin Counties, where the population has increased 11.33 percent and 9.96 percent, respectively, creating delays in care for urological conditions.

April 4, 2024 – Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, is the first cancer center to conduct a successful uterine transposition surgery on a cancer patient in the Southeast region.
Intended to preserve the patient’s fertility by sparing the uterus from radiation exposure, the uterus and ovaries are moved from their anatomic location to the upper abdominal region, allowing for radiation to treat the rectal area, where cancer in this specific patient was present. This stride in surgical advancements will allow for future female patients, who have cancer in the pelvic region, to preserve their uterus to one day, be able to carry a fetus to term and successfully deliver.
“This patient had rectal cancer. The intention was to move her uterus and ovaries to allow for the patient to begin radiation treatment. We are pleased to share this surgery was successful. Moving forward, we hope to provide this surgical option for young female patients who are looking to preserve their fertility, despite their cancer diagnosis within the pelvic region”, shared Dr. Jean-Marie Stephan, gynecologic surgical oncologist with Miami Cancer Institute, who performed the surgery.

AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION APPLAUDS SIGNING OF BILL TO ALLOW SCHOOLS IN FLORIDA TO STOCK ASTHMA MEDICATION
April 4, 2024 – Statement of Ashley Lyerly, Senior Director of Advocacy for the American Lung Association in Florida, in response to passage and signing of House Bill 883, sponsored by Representative Traci Koster and Senator Ed Hooper that will allow schools in Florida to stock asthma medications for student use.
“The American Lung Association thanks Representative Koster and Senator Hooper for their commitment to supporting safe access to asthma medication in schools. Their leadership on this issue will result in improved student safety, reductions in calls to emergency services and, ultimately, will save lives. The Lung Association is grateful for the support of the Florida House of Representatives and Florida Senate in unanimously passing the legislation and Governor DeSantis for signing House Bill 883 that will allow schools in Florida to provide more immediate access to medications for students with asthma. Specifically, the bill allows schools to maintain a supply of asthma medications, which students with asthma or who are in respiratory distress can use if necessary. Asthma can be a deadly disease if flare-ups are not treated immediately, so this bill has the potential to save lives for schools that take advantage of this authority.

UF AND SWEDISH RESEARCHERS CONNECT CHILDHOOD MICROBIOME WITH DEVELOPMENT OF AUTISM, ADHD
April 3, 2024 — A first-of-its-kind study has identified bacteria in the contents of children’s microbiomes that are believed to contribute to the development of neurodevelopmental disorders – years before the children are diagnosed with the disorders. Changes to the microbiome, the community of microorganisms inside the body, were correlated with future neurodevelopmental disorder diagnoses, as well as environmental factors and even common treatments for young childhood ear infections.
Researchers from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), as well as Linköping University and Örebo University in Sweden, conducted the study by using data collected over 20 years from 16,440 Swedish children participating in the All Babies in Southeast Sweden (ABIS) cohort. Of these children, 1,197, or 7.28%, developed a neurodevelopmental disorder.
The researchers analyzed data from the first five years of life, examining biological and environmental factors that may influence the presence, depletion or absence of certain bacteria linked to the development of autism, ADHD, intellectual disability and speech disorders. They analyzed umbilical cord blood taken from the children at birth and stool samples collected at 1 year old to study the children’s microbiomes and identify the earliest risk factors for future neurodevelopmental disorders. The children’s parents also supplied data by answering more than 800 survey questions throughout their early childhood to ascertain cognitive function, social behavior and environment.

NEW STUDY FINDS TRIPLE-NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER TUMORS WITH AN INCREASE IN IMMUNE CELLS HAVE LOWER RISK OF RECURRENCE AFTER SURGERY
April 2, 2024 – A new multicenter, international study suggests that people who have early-stage triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and high levels of immune cells within their tumors may have a lower risk of recurrence and better survival rates even when not treated with chemotherapy. The study was published today in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA).
TNBC is a breast cancer subtype that does not respond to drugs that target the estrogen receptor or the HER2 protein. It grows rapidly, is more likely to spread beyond the breast before diagnosis and is more likely to recur than other breast cancers. TNBC represents about 15% of all breast cancers and is more common in younger people and in women of African American, Hispanic and Indian descent. Immune cells, also known as tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, or TILs, are naturally existing immune system cells that can move from the bloodstream into a tumor and can recognize and destroy cancer cells.
“This is an important finding because it highlights that the abundance of TILs in breast tissue is a prognostic biomarker in people with early-stage triple-negative breast cancer, even when chemotherapy is not administered,” says Roberto Leon-Ferre, M.D., a breast medical oncologist at Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center and first author of the study. “The study’s findings may inspire future clinical trials to explore whether patients with a favorable prognosis (high TILs) can avoid intensive chemotherapy regimens.”

MAYO CLINIC STUDY FINDS ACTIVE WORKSTATIONS MAY IMPROVE COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE
April 4, 2024 – A recent Mayo Clinic study suggests that active workstations incorporating a walking pad, bike, stepper and/or standing desk are successful strategies for reducing sedentary time and improving mental cognition at work without reducing job performance. Extended sedentary behavior, whether at work or home, increases a person’s risk of preventable chronic diseases.
“Our findings suggest that it is feasible to blend movement with office work that previously would have been done during long periods of sitting. Active workstations may offer a way to potentially improve cognitive performance and overall health, simply by moving at work,” says Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, M.D., a preventive cardiologist at Mayo Clinic and senior author of the study.

BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION FINALIZES RULE EXPANDING ACCESS TO CARE AND INCREASING PROTECTIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH MEDICARE ADVANTAGE AND MEDICARE PART D
Final Rule Promotes Healthy Competition, Increases Access to Care, and Protects Enrollees from Harmful Marketing and Prior Authorization
April 4, 2024 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is finalizing policies that continue to strengthen enrollee protections and guardrails to ensure Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D (Part D) prescription drug plans best meet the needs of people with Medicare. The Contract Year (CY) 2025 Medicare Advantage and Part D final rule builds on existing CMS policies to promote competition, increase access to care, including important behavioral health services, and protect individuals from inappropriate marketing and prior authorization.
“Competition within Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D will provide consumers with meaningful choices among plans so they can select one that best meets their individual needs. Additional consumer protections will help people make the right decisions and get the coverage they want without hassles,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “We know that increased competition is good for the marketplace. That’s why the Biden-Harris Administration continues to increase competition in health care and lower costs, helping build on steps the Administration has already taken as well as identify opportunities to further spur innovation.”
“CMS is continuing its commitment to ensuring that Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plans remain strong, stable, and affordable for people with Medicare,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure. “This final rule builds on Biden-Harris Administration efforts to strengthen consumer protections so that people with Medicare can more easily choose the Medicare coverage options that are right for them.”

DRUG SHOWS PROMISE FOR SLOWING PROGRESSION OF RARE, PAINFUL GENETIC DISEASE
NIH-supported clinical trial could lead to first effective treatment for ACDC disease.
April 3, 2024 – A drug used to treat certain bone diseases shows promise for slowing the progression of a rare, painful genetic condition that causes excessive calcium buildup in the arteries, known as arterial calcification due to deficiency of CD73 (ACDC). These results are from a first-in-human clinical trial supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health. The study, published in the journal Vascular Medicine, could lead to the first effective treatment for the rare disease.
ACDC, which has no known cure, often targets the arteries of the legs and can make walking painful and difficult. It can also affect the joints of the hands, causing pain and deformities. In severe cases, the condition can lead to potential limb loss. Symptoms of the disease often begin in the late teens and 20s. An extremely rare disease, it is believed to affect only about 20 people worldwide and has an estimated prevalence of less than 1 in 1 million. Previous studies have identified the gene for ACDC disease and the biochemical mechanism behind it. More recent studies by the NHLBI research team identified an existing drug, called etidronate, as a potential treatment for ACDC based on disease models in animals and human cells.

SCIENTISTS DISCOVER POTENTIAL TREATMENT APPROACHES FOR POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE
Innovative disease modeling and gene editing techniques begin to answer long-standing questions
April 4, 2024 – Researchers have shown that dangerous cysts, which form over time in polycystic kidney disease (PKD), can be prevented by a single normal copy of a defective gene. This means the potential exists that scientists could one day tailor a gene therapy to treat the disease. They also discovered that a type of drug, known as a glycoside, can sidestep the effects of the defective gene in PKD. The discoveries could set the stage for new therapeutic approaches to treating PKD, which affects millions worldwide. The study, partially funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is published in Cell Stem Cell(link is external).
Scientists used gene editing and 3-D human cell models known as organoids to study the genetics of PKD, which is a life-threatening, inherited kidney disorder in which a gene defect causes microscopic tubes in the kidneys to expand like water balloons, forming cysts over decades. The cysts can crowd out healthy tissue, leading to kidney function problems and kidney failure. Most people with PKD are born with one healthy gene copy and one defective gene copy in their cells.
“Human PKD has been so difficult to study because cysts take years and decades to form,” said senior study author Benjamin Freedman, Ph.D., at the University of Washington, Seattle. “This new platform finally gives us a model to study the genetics of the disease and hopefully start to provide answers to the millions affected by this disease.”
