SALTY IMMUNE CELLS SURROUNDING THE BRAIN LINKED TO HYPERTENSION-INDUCED DEMENTIA
NIH-funded study in mice offers possible new target for high blood pressure treatments.
December 4, 2023 – A study supported by the National Institutes of Health suggests that the response of immune system cells inside the protective covering surrounding the brain may contribute to the cognitive decline that can occur in a person with chronic high blood pressure. This finding, published in Nature Neuroscience, may shed light on new ways to counteract the effects of high blood pressure on cognition. The study was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a part of NIH.
“The role of immune signaling in cognitive decline is critically important to understand,” said Roderick Corriveau, Ph.D., program director, NINDS. “These findings offer insight into how signaling from the immune system could contribute to symptoms of cognitive decline that ultimately result in dementia diagnoses.”

DECADES AFTER BLOOD PRESSURE-RELATED PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS, HISPANIC/LATINA WOMEN CAN HAVE CHANGES IN HEART STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Findings highlight importance of early monitoring and management of hypertension during and after pregnancy.
December 4, 2023 – Hispanic/Latina women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) – conditions marked by high blood pressure during pregnancy – are more likely to have abnormalities in their heart structure and function decades later when compared with women without a history of HDP, according to a National Institutes of Health-supported study. The findings, published in the journal Hypertension, also suggest that while having high blood pressure later in life can contribute to these abnormalities, HDP play the greater role, significantly raising a woman’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
“The changes in cardiac structure and function that this study uncovers are known predictors of cardiovascular events such as heart failure and even death,” said Jasmina Varagic, Ph.D., program officer in the Vascular Biology and Hypertension branch at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH. “These findings emphasize the importance of recognizing HDP as an important risk factor for these future problems, especially in this understudied population of women.”

SURGERY BENEFICIAL FOR SOME CHILDREN WITH MILD SLEEP-DISORDERED BREATHING
NIH-supported study shows better sleep, blood pressure after adenotonsillectomy.
DECEMBER 5, 2023 – Surgical removal of the tonsils and adenoids in children with snoring and mild breathing problems during sleep appears to improve their sleep, quality of life, and blood pressure a year after surgery, a clinical trial supported by the National Institutes of Health has found. The study, funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH, is believed to be the first large, randomized trial to address the effects of adenotonsillectomy on children with mild sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Adenotonsillectomy is among the most common surgical procedures in children, and mild SDB is an issue for a large proportion of these patients. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association(link is external).
“Our data suggest that for children with no symptoms other than snoring, it’s reasonable to monitor them over time without proceeding to surgery,” said study leader Susan Redline, M.D., M.P.H., of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, both in Boston. “However, for children who are having issues with disturbed sleep, daytime sleepiness, and behavioral problems, our data suggest that surgery may be a very reasonable option.”

"FLUENT" CANSORTIUM REPORTS THIRD QUARTER 2023 RESULTS
Q3 Revenue up 14% YoY to a Record $25.3 Million
Q3 Cash from Operations increased 32% to a Record $7.1 Million; 8th Consecutive Quarter of Positive Cash Flow –
TAMPA, Fla., Nov. 29, 2023 — Cansortium Inc. (CSE: TIUM.U) (OTCQB: CNTMF) (“Cansortium” or the “Company”), a vertically-integrated, multi-state cannabis company operating under the FLUENT™ brand, today announced financial and operating results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2023. Unless otherwise indicated, all financial results are presented in U.S. dollars.
“We generated record revenue and cash flow generation during the third quarter as we continued to execute on our growth objectives despite a seasonally slow period in Florida,” said CEO Robert Beasley. “Adjusted EBITDA was offset by increased headcount to keep pace with new store openings, however these investments are critical in laying the foundation for growth and supporting our future plans.
“In Florida, we continue to ramp our four new stores opened this year while driving cultivation improvements, leading to production of more high quality, high THC products. Although the third quarter is generally the most challenging period of the year in Florida, these operating improvements have enabled us to command higher retail prices and partially offset lower volumes from the summer months in Florida.
“Looking ahead, we will continue to drive improvements across our footprint in Florida and Pennsylvania, while capitalizing on our first mover advantage in Texas as we plan to open our brick-and-mortar delivery center in Houston in early 2024.”
Q3 2023 Financial Highlights (vs. Q3 2022)
-Revenue increased 14% to $25.3 million compared to $22.1 million. -Florida revenue increased 17% to $21.3 million compared to $18.2 million.
-Adjusted gross profit1 was $16.1 million or 63.9% of revenue, compared to $16.7 million or 75.5% of revenue. -Adjusted EBITDA was $8.8 million compared to $11.7 million, with the decrease primarily driven by additional salaries and wages as well as lower average ticket per transaction. This was partially offset by the impact of increased customer transactions.
-Cash flow from operations for the three months ended September 30, 2023 was $7.1 million compared to $5.4 million in the prior year. -At September 30, 2023 the Company had approximately $12.1 million of cash and cash equivalents and $60.3 million of total debt, with approximately 298 million shares outstanding.
