NEWEST GUIDANCE FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS AND THEIR PATIENTS: THE URGENT NEED FOR VACCINATION WITH THE NEWEST COVID-19 VACCINE
FAU Schmidt College of Medicine Researchers and Collaborators Publish Commentary in ‘American Journal of Medicine’
October 26, 2023 – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recently recommended vaccination with the COVID-19 vaccines that had been granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Sept. 11. These EUAs were issued to Moderna and Pfizer for their new and updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines to combat the increasingly prevalent new variant for which prior natural or acquired immunity does not confer protection.
In a commentary published in the American Journal of Medicine, researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine and collaborators provide the most updated guidance to health care providers.
“The war on COVID-19 continues to be fought valiantly and selflessly by health care professionals in communities and hospitals across the nation.,” said Allison H. Ferris, M.D., senior author, chair of the Department of Medicine, and program director of the internal medicine residency program, FAU Schmidt College of Medicine. “As competent and compassionate physicians, we must redouble our efforts to promote evidence-based clinical and public health practices, including vaccination of all eligible U.S. adults and children with the new vaccine.
A large body of reliable randomized evidence indicates that the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination on mortality and hospitalizations vastly outweigh the risk for all individuals aged 6 years and older. Moreover, vaccination of children eligible to receive the new COVID-19 vaccine will have major clinical and public health impacts by reducing their hospitalizations and deaths as well as those of their parents, grandparents, childcare providers and schoolteachers. While the absolute risks of severe COVID-19 are low in youths, the benefit to risk ratio is favorable toward vaccination.

USF HEALTH, TAMPA GENERAL AGAIN EXPAND MEDICAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES TO STRENGTHEN PIPELINE OF HEALTH CARE WORKFORCE
New anesthesiology residency program will train future physicians in crucial specialty
October 25, 2023 – USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and Tampa General Hospital today announced the launch of a new medical residency training program in anesthesiology.
The new anesthesiology residency program is based in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM) at the University of South Florida and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Residents in the four-year program will work at Tampa General Hospital and other TGH locations throughout the Tampa Bay region and be trained by USF Health faculty. Recruitment for applicants to the inaugural class has already begun.
The anesthesiology residents will add to the training positions already in place in MCOM’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program. As the new anesthesiology residency positions fill to 48 physicians – with 12 residents in each of the four years of training – USF Health’s GME program will expand to support more than 780 residents and fellows in nearly 70 specialty programs.
“Our new anesthesiology residency program will help us address a national shortage of both anesthesiologists and residency positions to train future physicians in this crucial specialty,” said Charles J. Lockwood, MD, MHCM, executive vice president of USF Health and dean of the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “We are delighted that Tampa General Hospital is collaborating with us to further expand our GME programs across a wide variety of specialties to ensure the most advanced care to the next generation of Floridians.”

LEE HEALTH REMINDS THE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA COMMUNITY THAT PEDIATRIC ELECTROCARDIOGRAMS ARE AN IMPORTANT PREVENTIVE MEASURE
October 24, 2023 — As children and teenagers gear up for fall sports, Lee Health wants to remind the Southwest Florida community that pediatric electrocardiograms (EKG) are an easy and painless test to measure the electrical activity of children’s and teenager’s hearts.
An EKG records the electrical signal from the heart to check for different heart conditions, listens to the rhythm of the heartbeat, the size of the chambers of the heart and the amount of blood going to the heart muscle itself.
“All children and teenagers benefit from getting an EKG that helps identify any potential problem that warrants a follow-up with a cardiac specialist,” said pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Eric Eason. “Preventive medicine and peace of mind can help save lives and enable our children and loved ones to live full and happy lives.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2010, one in 250 to one in 59 children and teenagers were living with a congenital heart defect in certain areas of the United States.

BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION LAUNCHES WINDOW-SHOPPING AHEAD OF 11TH ACA MARKETPLACE OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD
Consumers continue to have more choices and stable premiums
OCTOBER 25, 2023 – The Biden-Harris Administration believes health coverage is a right, not a privilege, and is committed to investing in a robust Marketplace Open Enrollment campaign so everyone who needs health coverage can easily sign up for it. Starting today, HealthCare.gov consumers can preview their health care coverage options and see detailed information about 2024 health insurance plans and prices offered in their area ahead of the Open Enrollment period that begins November 1.
As we begin the 11th Open Enrollment period, the Marketplace is stronger than ever with lower out-of-pocket premiums thanks to the continuation of enhanced financial assistance under the Inflation Reduction Act. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, nearly 15 million Americans are saving an average of $800 a year on their health insurance premiums.
“Millions of Americans have obtained affordable, high quality health care coverage through the Marketplaces, and I encourage all who are eligible to look at the information available at HealthCare.gov and learn about plans that meet their needs, said U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra. “The Biden-Harris Administration has made it a priority to continue to strengthen the ACA and build on its progress by reducing premiums for the millions of Americans enrolled in Marketplace coverage.”
“The ACA Marketplaces have continued to grow and strengthen in recent years. This year, consumers continue to have access to affordable health care coverage that is vital for families,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure. “We encourage consumers to visit HealthCare.gov and their State-based Marketplaces to preview plans and premiums now so that they are prepared to make selections that fit their needs when Open Enrollment begins on November 1.”

HIGHER INCOME AND LONGER WORKING YEARS ARE LINKED TO BETTER MOBILITY
Longitudinal study suggests enhanced musculoskeletal health can prolong working years and is associated with higher income.
OCTOBER 25, 2023 – A new study on the relationship between mobility and income has shown that better mobility was strongly associated with higher income and longer working years in adults. The findings, from researchers at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), part of the National Institutes of Health, also suggest that maintaining mobility was linked to greater earnings over time. The study was published in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.
“We have long understood that greater mobility is an important indicator of good health,” said NIAMS Director Lindsey A. Criswell, M.D., M.P.H. “The notion that mobility can have economic rewards further extends the evidence for the benefits of exercise and maintaining an active lifestyle.”
Timothy Bhattacharyya, M.D., head of the NIAMS Clinical and Investigative Orthopaedics Surgery Unit, led the study. Bhattacharyya and colleagues analyzed data from the federally supported Health and Retirement Study (HERS), the largest representative longitudinal study of Americans over age 50, which explores the challenges associated with aging on work, health, social, psychological, family, and economic status.
