AMADEO LOPEZ-CASTRO III NAMED CHAIRMAN OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH TRUST BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Miami, FL – June 27, 2024 – At yesterday’s Public Health Trust (PHT) Board of Trustees meeting, Amadeo Lopez-Castro III, an attorney in Miami-Dade, was voted chairman of Jackson Health System’s governing board.  Lopez-Castro, who has served as a PHT member since 2019, is replacing outgoing chairman, Dr. Walter T. Richardson.

“Amadeo has been a valuable member of PHT for several years, and understands the unique role we play in ensuring everyone in Miami-Dade County has access to world-class health care,” said Carlos A. Migoya, president and CEO of Jackson Health System. “Today’s appointment as chairman of this board holds special significance.  He is continuing the legacy his late father built when he served as the PHT chairman from 2000 to 2002.”

His late father, Amadeo Lopez-Castro Jr., was an engineer and banker who was passionate about Jackson, its mission, and expanding care and access to all residents of Miami-Dade County. He advocated for the acquisition of Deering Hospital, which is now Jackson South Medical Center. In 2014, the Board of County Commissioners named the “Amadeo Lopez-Castro, Jr. Main Lobby” at Jackson South.

ACHE OF SOUTH FLORIDA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: KENNETH JONES

Kenneth Jones’ grandmother was a nurse, and because of that, he said he’s always had an interest in healthcare. Now, as Chief Executive Officer of HCA Florida NW Hospital, he finds himself in healthcare, but in a different capacity than he expected. “I really didn’t know about healthcare administration until later in my undergraduate progression,” he said, pointing out, however, that he had participated in leadership activities while growing up, including for student government, and served on numerous committees for professional organizations. He said being CEO at the hospital “is really a good mixture of healthcare and business and leadership; it kind of melded two of my passions.”

Jones credits part of his progression with becoming a member of ACHE – the American College of Healthcare Executives – in 2001. He said the graduate school program at the University of Minnesota encouraged students to participate, and he joined because he wanted to take advantage of the organization’s resources – conferences, literature, mentoring opportunities, scholarships. “I wanted to develop my overall leadership skills, and I really have used those resources to become a better healthcare executive.”

MEMORIAL PEMBROKE LAUNCHES AQUABLATION THERAPY

June 27, 2024 – One out of every two men over the age of 50 is impacted by an enlarged prostate, a medical issue that makes urination difficult and weakens the bladder. By the time they reach age 70, 80% of males are dealing with symptoms, with approximately 12 million men in the U.S. currently being treated for the problem, also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

BPH can significantly impact quality of life; if untreated, its symptoms can affect bladder and kidney functions. Current treatment options include medications, surgery, and minimally invasive procedures, the newest of which, Aquablation therapy, is now being offered at Memorial Hospital Pembroke.

“Men with enlarged prostates have a variety of treatment options available which depend on their symptoms and prostate size. Aquablation is a very powerful new tool, able to treat men with very large prostates in a short period of time,” said Dr. Jonathan Silberstein, chief of the Uro-Oncology program at Memorial Healthcare System. “It is a minimally invasive solution, and a welcome alternative to medications that can increase the risk of dementia and heart failure. We’re offering patients sustained relief with minimal complications, as was seen in clinical studies.”

STUDY CHALLENGES ED PROTOCOLS FOR GERIATRIC HEAD INJURIES AND BLOOD THINNERS

BOCA RATON June 25, 2024 – Falls are the most common cause of injury among adults 65 and older in the United States. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year, more than 14 million older adults (one in four) report a fall. About 90% of head injuries among older individuals is due to ground-level falls.

Evaluating an older adult with a head injury in the emergency department (ED) requires careful assessment due to the increased risk of complications such as intracranial hemorrhage. There also is heightened concern for older patients taking anticoagulants or blood thinners who sustain a head injury because of the risk of delayed intracranial hemorrhage (ICH).

ICH is a type of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage that takes place in various areas of the brain. A delayed ICH can occur up to several weeks after the injury, but usually within 48 hours. As such, this risk has prompted some providers to admit these patients to the hospital for observation and repeat CT scans, the imaging modality of choice for evaluating acute head injuries.

ALL-FEMALE INAUGURAL SURGICAL RESIDENCY CLASS GRADUATES FROM MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM’S GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION

JUNE 27, 2024 – Established in July 2019 by the esteemed general and critical care surgeon Eddy Carrillo, MD, Memorial Healthcare System’s General Surgery Residency Program welcomed its first cohort of future surgeons. Despite the historical underrepresentation of women in surgical residency programs nationwide, the inaugural class included five female physicians aspiring to become exceptional surgeons.

Under Dr. Carrillo’s leadership, the program established a solid foundation, integrating all the essential elements to create an exceptional training environment. The journey faced numerous challenges, including securing ACGME accreditation and navigating the COVID-19 pandemic while maintaining rigorous training schedules. Despite the intense pressure, their resilience and commitment ensured the continuation of essential surgical services and highlighted their role as vital frontline healthcare workers during the global health crisis.

“Watching five interns transform into accomplished surgeons, with grit and determination has been one of the most amazing privileges and honors of my career, said Holly L. Neville, MD, associate chief medical officer and program director of General Surgery Residency at Memorial Healthcare System. “From working tirelessly to recruit the brightest and the best, to honing their own skills as surgeons, their efforts have been instrumental in building the outstanding reputation the program enjoys today.”

AHA HOUSE STATEMENT ON “IMPROVING VALUE-BASED CARE FOR PATIENTS AND PROVIDERS”

American Hospital Association for the Committee on Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health of the U.S. House of Representatives “Improving Value-Based Care for Patients and Providers”

June 26, 2024 – On behalf of our nearly 5,000 member hospitals, health systems and other health care organizations, our clinician partners — including more than 270,000 affiliated physicians, 2 million nurses and other caregivers — and the 43,000 health care leaders who belong to our professional membership groups, the American Hospital Association (AHA) appreciates the opportunity to provide feedback on the transition to value-based care.

THE ROLE OF ALTERNATIVE PAYMENT MODELS IN VALUE-BASED CARE
Our members support the U.S. health care system moving toward the provision of more outcomes-based, coordinated care and are continuing to redesign delivery systems to increase value and better serve patients. Over the last 14 years, many of our hospital and health system members have participated in a variety of alternative payment models (APMs).

While the movement to value holds tremendous promise, the transition has been slower than anticipated and more needs to be done to drive long-term system transformations.
