Innovative ‘REV’ Procedure Sets Baby John in Motion
June 24, 2026 – When baby John entered the world in March 2025, his tiny heart was already an open book. After a routine 15-week prenatal anatomy ultrasound revealed that John had heart function irregularities, his family was immediately referred to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Heart Institute, where further prenatal evaluation led to an innovative plan of care.
John was diagnosed in utero with a congenital heart defect called double outlet right ventricle (DORV) in which both the aorta and pulmonary artery emerge from the right ventricle. This anomaly causes oxygen-poor blood to mix with oxygen-rich blood, and can lead to severe symptoms, including breathing issues, heart failure and poor growth. In addition, John had pulmonary valve atresia, a rare defect in which the pulmonary valve fails to form properly, blocking blood blow from the right ventricle to the lungs.

Memorial Foundation and Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute Offers Free Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Screenings to Broward County Residents
A free screening is set for Saturday, July 18 at Memorial Hospital West for at-risk residents.
June 22, 2026 – Memorial Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Memorial Healthcare System, is providing new grant funding to support free peripheral artery disease (PAD) screenings across Broward County aimed at driving earlier diagnosis and reducing the risk of amputation for undiagnosed residents.
Within the Memorial Healthcare System, providers have observed an alarming rise in advanced diabetic foot wounds, amputations and undiagnosed or poorly controlled hypertension, all of which early vascular screening is designed to prevent.
According to the American Heart Association, PAD is a narrowing of the arteries that reduces blood flow to the limbs and affects an estimated 10 to 12 million U.S. adults over age 40. It is a leading cause of amputation, particularly among patients with diabetes and historically underserved populations. Women also remain significantly underrepresented in vascular research and clinical trials, contributing to gaps in diagnosis, treatment and preventive care.

Person-centered care improved for individuals living with dementia, thanks to multi-media process developed by Florida educator
“You can’t have person-centered care if you don’t know the person first. Person-centered care is no longer optional, but imperative. It is a must have.”
DUNEDIN, Fla. (June 22, 2026) – When Jessie Brown got a call from her dad’s senior living community that he was “agitated and calling the other residents his kids,” she realized the care partner didn’t know her NFL standout father, suffering from Alzheimer’s, also had been a youth sports coach for 45 years – and was only trying to organize a baseball team.
“I realized something heartbreaking: the nurse didn’t know this vital piece of his life,” recalls Brown, a Dunedin special education teacher. “If she didn’t know that, what else was lost about who my dad was?”

Study Reveals Sex-Specific Immune Pathway in Deadly Brain Cancer
Targeting GABA-driven immune suppression could one day lead to therapies specifically for women with glioblastoma
June 23, 2026 – Researchers have identified a critical biological difference in how glioblastoma develops in male and female laboratory models, pinpointing an immune pathway that fuels tumor growth only in females. The study shows that the neurotransmitter GABA boosts the cancer-protecting activity of immune cells in female models—but not male ones—and blocking that signal improved outcomes. The findings could one day lead to new drug targets and therapeutics specifically for women.

An Evening of Hope Celebrating 25 Years of Compassion and Saving Lives
For 25 years, A Safe Haven for Newborns has stood as a beacon of hope for mothers in crisis and a lifeline for vulnerable newborns. What began as Nick’s deeply personal journey to heal a broken heart and honor the memory of his beloved wife, Gloria, following her tragic passing, has grown into an internationally recognized organization dedicated to preventing infant abandonment and providing support, counseling, and critical resources to women facing the overwhelming reality of an unplanned pregnancy. From its beginnings, the mission has been rooted in compassion, dignity, and love — offering hope, protection, and a path forward during life’s most difficult moments.
Over the past quarter century, countless lives have been touched through the organization’s unwavering commitment to offering safe, legal, and anonymous options for mothers seeking help. Through advocacy, education, community partnerships, and around-the-clock support, A Safe Haven for Newborns has continued to remind women that they are never alone. To date, 441 newborns have been given a chance at life — 431 in Florida; nine in other states, and one in Honduras.
This milestone anniversary is more than a celebration of years — it is a celebration of lives, second chances, and the power of compassion to change the future. We invite you to join us in celebrating our Silver Jubilee by visiting our website and selecting a sponsorship opportunity. Or, contact Nick Silverio at safehaven@asafehavenfornewborns.com; 305-882-1304 x103 for more information.
