Carlos A. Migoya to Conclude Tenure as Jackson CEO, Leaving a Legacy of Transformation at Miami-Dade County’s Only Public Health System
David Zambrana, Jackson Health System President and Chief Operating Officer, appointed to succeed Migoya as CEO
January 29, 2026- Nearly 15 years after becoming Jackson Health System’s CEO, Carlos A. Migoya announced today that his last day in the role will be May 31, 2026, a decision he shared during the Public Health Trust (PHT) board meeting. The PHT board praised Migoya for his transformational leadership, and then voted unanimously to appoint Jackson’s president and chief operating officer (COO), David Zambrana, PhD, DNP, MBA, RN, as Migoya’ s successor.
For the last six years, Migoya has worked alongside Zambrana, preparing him for this transition. Zambrana began his career 35 years ago as a nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital, working in the cardiac and pediatric intensive care units and as a bedside nurse at Ryder Trauma Center. He then earned senior leadership roles at public and private hospital systems inside and outside of South Florida, previously serving as CEO of University of Miami Hospital and CEO of Jackson Memorial Hospital, before becoming Jackson Health System’s president and COO.
“David Zambrana is the most prepared leader in Jackson’s 107-year history,” Migoya said. “The trust and respect our teams already feel for David make him, hands-down, the best choice for our future.”

| ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight: Hunter Hannan
Hunter Hannan joined ACHE – the American College of Healthcare Executives – because he thought it would be a great networking platform, a place to meet new people in the healthcare industry. Hunter found that, but he also gained so much more.
Hunter, the Director of Health System Partnerships for US Acute Care Solutions (USACS), the largest physician-owned provider of Emergency and Inpatient Medicine services in the country, said he learned about ACHE from some of the clinical leaders he worked with who highly recommended it. “They said it’s a great place to meet leaders and like-minded individuals in the healthcare space.” What he found in addition is that “ACHE is such an incredibly collaborative organization of individuals in healthcare – potentially from competing markets – coming together with the same issues or challenges, and being able to openly discuss the solutions they’re finding.”
He said the organization provides a platform for everyone to learn and to grow, and the networking aspect in building new connections is extremely valuable. “ACHE has opened a lot of doors for me to be introduced to individuals in healthcare that align with my organization’s mission to care for patients.”
US Acute Care Solutions is a physician-owned practice that provides comprehensive, integrated acute care services to hospitals and health systems, treating more than 11 million patients annually with some of the country’s leading health systems. Hunter’s responsibilities involve working with the organization’s clinical leadership teams to help identify opportunities both for providing support and for expanding services.

Baptist Health Sunrise Hospital Marks Milestone with Groundbreaking
JANUARY 28, 2026 – Baptist Health Sunrise Hospital hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of the new facility. The planned seven-story, 340,000-square-foot facility is expected to open to patients in 2029, expanding access to care for residents of Sunrise and western Broward County. Financing the Future of Care in Our Community
Jan. 30, 2026 – Fueled by strong bond ratings, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMH) is moving full speed ahead on more than $1 billion in capital projects that will greatly expand and enhance the community’s access to its five-star care.
SMH recently began laying deep foundations at its new, $507 million hospital in North Port, and has several other expansion projects under way, including an $82.5 million inpatient rehabilitation facility at its SMH-Venice campus and more than $50 million in radiology upgrades and expansions in Sarasota and Venice.
The capital projects are supported by strong and upgraded bond ratings from Moody’s Investors Service and Fitch Ratings. Similar to an individual’s credit score, strong bond ratings significantly lower the health system’s cost of borrowing for major capital improvements. Earlier this week, the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board voted to issue up to $425 million in revenue bonds this year to help cover capital project costs. Also this week, Moody’s reinforced the health system’s creditworthiness, upgrading the hospital district’s rating to Aa3. Fitch reaffirmed the health system’s “AA-” rating in 2025.

After a Devastating Injury and Successful Surgery, Teen Creates Lego Kits to Raise Spirits and Inspire Other Patients
JANUARY 30, 2026- Complex, extensive surgery at HSS, almost a year of rehabilitation— and Legos—helped a teen athlete recover after a devastating sports injury, and now he is paying it forward. Eighteen-year-old Devin Brenner collects used Lego bricks, painstakingly sanitizes and sorts them, and designs “new” Lego sets to donate to young patients at Lerner Children’s Pavilion at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in NYC, where he was a patient. Accompanied by his HSS surgeon, Anil S. Ranawat, MD, Devin made a second Legos donation this week to patients at Lerner Children’s Pavilion.
Wishing to give back to HSS for the care he received and inspired by how building Legos provided comfort and purpose during his own recovery, Devin hopes the sets he creates will encourage young patients and lift their spirits.

Jan. 30, 2026 — Lee Health is raising the bar for heart care in Southwest Florida, becoming the first health system in the region to offer robotic-assisted mitral valve repair using the state-of-the-art da Vinci surgical robot. This innovative approach dramatically shortens recovery time, allowing patients to get back to their lives faster. Although the procedure is new to the region, it is delivered by a robotic cardiac surgery team with decades of combined experience spanning multiple generations of robotic technology.
The mitral valve plays a critical role in regulating blood flow through the heart. When the valve leaks or becomes stiff or narrowed, blood can flow backward into the lungs, placing strain on the heart and leading to serious complications. Mitral valve disease is often first detected as a heart murmur and confirmed through imaging, but many patients experience few or no symptoms until the condition becomes advanced.

Mayo Clinic offers newly FDA-approved robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy surgery
JANUARY 30, 2026 — Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center is expanding surgical options for patients undergoing treatment or risk reducing procedures for breast cancer through the adoption of robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy at its Minnesota and Florida campuses. Following recent Food and Drug Administration approval of the use of this platform and device for these procedures, Mayo Clinic surgeons are now offering a minimally invasive approach designed to improve cosmetic outcomes, preserve skin and nipple viability, and broaden opportunities for potential sensory restoration.
Nipple-sparing mastectomy preserves the nipple–areolar complex and healthy breast skin, creating a more natural appearing reconstructed breast after reconstruction. The improved cosmetic result can offer meaningful psychological benefits for patients compared with traditional mastectomy. Many patients, however, continue to experience visible scarring, diminished or absent sensation in the breast and nipple, and risk of loss of nipple or skin due to low blood flow.

Mayo Clinic uses gene editing to reverse inherited kidney disease in preclinical study
JANUARY 29, 2026 — Mayo Clinic researchers have developed a promising gene-editing therapy that directly corrects a genetic mutation responsible for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), the most common inherited kidney disorder.
A single treatment of the gene therapy slowed kidney cyst growth, improved heart and liver health, and extended survival in preclinical models of ADPKD. The findings were published in Nature Communications.
“This is the first time we’ve been able to show that base editing can effectively and safely correct a disease-causing mutation in the kidney in a complex biological system,” says Xiaogang Li, Ph.D., nephrology researcher and senior author of the study. “Instead of managing symptoms, this strategy goes after the underlying cause of the disease.”

Researchers identify new blood markers that may detect early pancreatic cancer
NIH-funded, four-marker panel could one day help catch one of deadliest cancers at more treatable stages.
JANUARY 30, 2026 – National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported investigators have developed a blood test to find pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, one of the deadliest forms of cancer. The new test could improve survival rates from pancreatic cancer, which tends to be diagnosed at late stages when therapy is less likely to be effective. The findings were published in Clinical Cancer Research.
Overall, only about 1 in 10 pancreatic cancer patients survive more than five years from diagnosis. However, experts expect that when the cancer is found and treated at an earlier stage, survival would improve. While finding the cancer early is key, there are no current screening methods to do so.

Secretary Kennedy Appoints New Chair and Ten New Members to Federal Alzheimer’s Advisory Council
January 29, 2026 — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. today announced the appointment of a new Chair and 10 new public members to the Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Research, Care, and Services. Established in 2011 under the National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA), the Advisory Council meets quarterly to advise the Secretary on reducing the burden of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
The newly appointed members bring a broad range of expertise and lived experience, including individuals with senior leadership experience in aging services, public health, and dementia advocacy, as well as a patient advocate living with dementia. Their perspectives will support HHS and its federal partners as the Department continues work to update the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease.

Michelle Branham was appointed by Governor DeSantis four years ago and serves as Secretary of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, leading statewide initiatives that support more than 6.5 million Floridians age 60 and older.
