VITAS® HEALTHCARE EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR HIGH-QUALITY HOSPICE CARE
May 2, 2023 – Six VITAS Healthcare hospice service areas have earned national recognition for their commitment to quality care through the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s (NHPCO) Quality Connections program. Structured around four fundamental pillars, the program recognizes hospice and palliative care providers that demonstrate a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
According to a representative at NHPCO, 311 organizations enrolled in the 2022 Quality Connections program, with just 22 providers completing all pillars—six of which were VITAS.
The VITAS service areas recognized for their efforts to improve patient care and family satisfaction, as well as their commitment to staff education and training, include:
Chicago, Illinois Citrus County, Florida Connecticut Houston, Texas Philadelphia, Pennsylvania San Gabriel, California
“Of the six VITAS locations that enrolled in 2022, we are proud that all were recognized by NHPCO for their dedication to quality end-of-life care,” said Nick Westfall, VITAS President and CEO. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our employees, who strive every day to provide the highest level of compassionate care to our patients and their families.”

RESEARCH SHOWS NEW BREAST EXPLANT TECHNIQUE PRESERVES BREAST TISSUE AND SAFELY PROVIDES OVERALL BETTER AESTHETIC OUTCOME
May 2, 2023- A recently published paper in Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum explains a new approach to breast explant (the removal of breast implants) surgery. The paper, titled “Safely Shaping the Breast After Implant Removal and Total Intact Capsulectomy Using the Mammary Imbrication Lift and Fixation Technique” shows that this breast lift and explant technique can be safely performed simultaneously to allow total intact capsulectomy, preservation of the breast tissue and blood supply to the nipple, and a more pleasing aesthetic result.
While current scientific literature is riddled with various approaches for breast implant placement and replacement, there is very little research or publication describing safe aesthetic approaches to breast explant surgery. “I developed the mammary imbrication lift and fixation technique in order to treat the ever-increasing number of explant patients I have seen in my practice over the last 12 years,” says study author Joshua Lampert, M.D., plastic and reconstructive surgeon. “I searched through textbooks, journal articles, and scientific literature and could not find an adequate prior solution.”

CRAIG ZINN OF CRAIG ZINN AUTOMOTIVE GROUP INITIATES ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY ENDOWMENT AT JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL WITH A COMMITMENT OF $500,000 FOR THE PROGRAM
May 2, 2023 ― Continuing its dedication to giving back to the South Florida community, President and CEO Craig Zinn of Craig Zinn Automotive Group (CZAG) has initiated an animal assisted therapy endowment at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. CZAG will fund the initial needs of the program, while building the endowment of $500,000 to provide income from interest and fund the program in perpetuity.
Upon seeing how valuable and joy-filled the hospital’s Animal Assisted Therapy Program is to so many young patients, CZAG wanted to ensure the program is funded in perpetuity. Animal assisted therapy has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and provide a sense of comfort and companionship to patients, including children.
The endowment provides necessary funding to purchase an additional therapy dog for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, as well as supplemental costs associated with having an additional handler on staff at the hospital.

“BROWARD HEALTH HELPED ME TURN MY LIFE AROUND”
MAY 3, 2023 – Lagos Salami, an energetic father of two, never thought he would have heart problems – especially not at age 44. He didn’t realize that his poor sleep quality was actually the early symptoms of heart arrhythmia.
“I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air,” Salami said.
The Fort Lauderdale resident initially dismissed his symptoms until he had a seizure in November 2022 and paramedics rushed him to the Emergency Department at Broward Health Medical Center.
Doctors diagnosed Salami with atrial fibrillation (Afib), which happens when the heart rhythm is irregular and beats too slow or too fast. In Salami’s case, his heartbeat was very slow.
“Atrial fibrillation can also trigger the heart muscle to weaken and cause symptoms of heart failure,” said Yordanka Reyna, M.D., medical director of the heart failure program at Broward Health Medical Center. “It’s important to perform the right test to make the accurate diagnosis and best comprehensive plan.”

ANTI-POVERTY PROGRAMS MAY HELP REDUCE DISPARITIES IN BRAIN DEVELOPMENT AND MENTAL HEALTH SYMPTOMS IN CHILDREN
NIH study identifies potential value of financial support programs to decrease health impacts of socioeconomic inequities.
May 2, 2023- States that provide stronger social safety nets have lower socioeconomic disparities in the brain development and mental health of children 9 to 11 years old, according to research supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health. The disparity in brain structure between children from high- versus low-income households was more than a third lower in states with greater cash assistance than in those offering less, and the disparity in mental health symptoms was reduced by nearly a half.
The study, published in Nature Communications(link is external), highlights the impact that socioeconomic inequities can have on a child’s brain development, but demonstrates that this gap can be mitigated through state anti-poverty programs, such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and Medicaid.

RISK OF REHOSPITALIZATION IN YOUNGER WOMEN AFTER HEART ATTACK NEARLY DOUBLE THAT OF MEN
May 2, 2023 – Women aged 55 years and younger have nearly double the risk of rehospitalization in the year immediately after a heart attack compared to men of similar age, according to a study supported by the National Institutes of Health. Higher rates of risk factors such as obesity, heart failure, and depression among women most likely contributed to the disparity.
The findings suggest a need for closer health monitoring of the approximately 40,000 American women aged 18 to 55 years who have heart attacks each year following hospital discharge, and a better understanding of the reasons behind the different outcomes. The study, funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH, was published today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
