The feature blends documentary-style storytelling with insights from VITAS thought leaders, offering viewers a clear understanding of hospice as a healthcare specialty that prioritizes comfort, dignity and quality of life for patients with serious illnesses. The segment emphasizes that choosing hospice does not mean giving up; rather, it ensures patients and their loved ones receive the right care at the right time, wherever they call home.

Planting the Seeds for Thriving Rural Health Care

Rural hospitals and communities across Florida are getting much-needed support from the federal and state governments. From the federal Rural Health Transformation Fund to the state Capital Improvement Fund and Rural Renaissance legislation, Florida’s rural hospitals and communities are entering a new era of possibility.
Five rural hospitals closed in Florida over the last two decades, and three converted to providing emergency care only. And many others cut services, such as labor and delivery and other specialty care. Stemming this tide of closures and service line reductions requires sustained investment and policies that reflect rural communities’ unique challenges and demographics.
With meaningful federal and state support, rural hospitals and other healthcare providers can ensure that rural Floridians can access the full range of outpatient and inpatient services close to home when they need it. In addition, robust rural healthcare infrastructure is integral to a healthy rural economy. When hospitals struggle or close entirely, jobs, tax revenue, and local spending are lost. Families move away, schools lose enrollment, churches lose parishioners, industries lose workers, and once thriving communities are diminished. Main Streets become ghost towns.
Federal and state policy developments are hoping to change that.
The federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act, enacted in July of last year, makes a once-in-a-generation investment in rural healthcare with the Rural Health Transformation Program. It appropriates $50 billion over five years to states to invest in rural healthcare innovation and transformation. Florida received $209 million for this year, representing the single largest federal investment in rural health care in Florida.
Florida’s three primary focus areas for funding are improving access to care, strengthening the health care workforce, and advancing health care innovation. Among the state’s proposals are expanding clinical training and rural rotations; providing start-up funding for rural and satellite clinics; and investing in mobile health units, remote patient monitoring, behavioral health telehubs, and advanced telespecialty services.

FAU Awarded $4M in Federal Funding for Defense, Semiconductor and Neuroscience Programs

Directed by Dimitris Pados, Ph.D., professor, director of the CA-AI, and a fellow of the FAU Sensing Institute in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the initiative establishes a joint Florida–New York Air Force University Center with the University at Buffalo to advance research, development and education in secure, resilient and software-programmable wireless networks for AI-enabled robotic platforms.

FAU Study Links Ultra-processed Foods to Greater Heart Attack, Stroke Risk
Feb. 5, 2026 – Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are industrially modified products loaded with added fats, sugars, starches, salts and chemical additives like emulsifiers. From sodas to snacks and processed meats, these foods are stripped of natural nutrients. UPFs introduce many ingredients that our bodies have never encountered. In the United States today, UPFs make up nearly 60% of adults’ and 70% of children’s diets.
Prior studies have shown that people who consume large amounts of UPFs have higher risks of metabolic syndrome, a constellation of overweight and obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and insulin resistance, as well as increased levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein, a sensitive marker of inflammation and accurate predictor of future cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is mainly comprised of heart attacks and strokes. However, data are sparse on whether people who consume higher amounts of UPFs have increased risks of CVD.
With consumption of UPFs on the rise and CVD remaining a leading cause of death in the U.S. and increasing around the world, understanding the link between the two is more urgent than ever – as insights could have profound implications for individual patient care as well as the health of the general public.

February 4, 2026- As a new parent, few things are more terrifying than SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. And for decades, SIDS rates in the United States remained high, with seemingly no way to combat the phenomenon.
But one simple innovation changed all that.
“People started listening to and following Safe Sleep rules,” says Sheera Thomas, RN, a discharge facilitator and new mom educator at Sarasota Memorial. “And since then, SIDS rates have collapsed by about 50%.
Rules for Safe Sleep
With this short list of instructions, endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents can prevent most common sleep accidents that lead to fatal suffocation.
1.Place infants flat on their back to sleep
Some people still want to lie their baby on its side, as though in a recovery position, in case the baby spits up in its sleep. In reality, it greatly increases risk of suffocation.
2.Use a crib or sleeping area with a firm, flat mattress
Soft or fluffy surfaces and materials that a baby sinks into can pose choking hazards.
3.The crib should be empty
With the exception of a well-fitted sheet, the baby’s sleeping area should completely clean of all pillows, blankets, toys, cushions and bumpers. “Nothing is supposed to be in there,” says Thomas. “They’ll move, and we need to make sure they’re not moving into anything that can cause accidental suffocation.”
4.No co-sleeping
If mom or dad is tired, they should put the baby down to sleep in its own Safe Sleep area, while the parent naps nearby. Both a baby rolling into a parent and a parent rolling onto a baby can cause a fatal accident.

FEBRUARY 5 2026 – Supriya Chakraborty might have been studying insects in a lab had it not been for an immunology college instructor in India who taught him about the superheroes inside him—immune cells that wage a battle against bacteria, parasites, and a host of other adversaries that invade our bodies.
“That really fascinated me,” Chakraborty recalled. “My focus shifted from entomology to wanting to solve illnesses that affect humans, specifically neurodegenerative disorders.”
Zeynab Tabrizi would take quite a different path to studying conditions that damage and destroy parts the human nervous system. She had long been a student of immunology and neuroscience in her native Iran, conducting research that explored the causes of disorders like schizophrenia and autism. “I had some experience working in industry,” she said, “but my heart was in academia.”

New approach offers a way to turn a cancer cell’s strength into its weakness and may create new opportunities for combination therapies without adding toxicity
Feb. 5, 2026 – Overcoming tumor resistance to chemotherapy drugs has long been a challenge for oncology clinicians and researchers. Now, a new study suggests that blocking a key protein, p300, may force damaged cancer cells into a state of uncontrolled transcriptional activity, thereby creating a novel form of cellular stress that can make even chemo-resistant tumors sensitive again to treatment.
The study was led by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and appears online Feb. 6, in the journal Genes & Development.

AHCA Announces New Health Care Transparency Tools
February 5, 2026- Today, the Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Shevaun L. Harris announced the launch of two new transparency resources aimed at providing health care consumers and interested stakeholders with more information.
The first is the launch of the Florida Nursing Home Utilization and Staffing (FNHURS) Dashboard, an interactive online tool, that gives Floridians access to information about nursing home operations. The dashboard provides easy-to-navigate data on occupancy, revenue, and utilization trends. This information is based on nursing facility reported data and will serve as a useful tool for stakeholders interested in gaining more insight into financial and workforce data of Florida licensed nursing facilities.
In addition to the FNHURS Dashboard, the Agency is releasing enhancements to the MyFloridaRx Prescription Drug Price Locator. MyFloridaRx combines pricing data across Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance to create a uniform system of prescription drug price transparency, supported by an interactive map that illustrates cost differences across Florida’s counties. The addition of the Florida Prescription Drug Price Dashboard provides prescription drug price increases reported under Senate Bill 1550, the Prescription Drug Reform Act, which requires manufacturers to report Wholesale Acquisition Cost (WAC) increases to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
