Cleveland Clinic Hosts 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration
Program features fireside chat with civil rights icon the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss Jr.
January 16, 2026 – Today, Cleveland Clinic paid tribute to the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a virtual celebration for caregivers and community members.
Since 1992, Cleveland Clinic’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration has honored Dr. King’s enduring influence and his vision of strengthening communities through unity and service.
The event was co-hosted by Tom Mihaljevic, M.D., CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic and holder of the Morton L. Mandel CEO Chair, and Vickie Eaton Johnson, executive vice president and Chief Community Officer of Cleveland Clinic.
This year’s program emphasized the power of community collaboration in addressing social drivers of health, such as housing, food and education. The theme was inspired by Dr. King’s 1968 sermon, The Drum Major Instinct, where he said: “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.”
“For 34 years, this celebration has been one of our most cherished traditions. It’s a moment to reflect on the profound impact of Dr. King’s life and legacy,” said Dr. Mihaljevic. “He was a champion of human dignity advocating that every person was deserving of the opportunity to live a healthy, purposeful life. Through his example, he taught each of us about the power we hold to make a difference.”

AAP News: 2025 measles cases highest since 1991
January 2026 – Measles cases have surpassed another milestone with more cases in 2025 than any year since 1991.
Since last summer, case counts had been at the highest levels since 1992. However, the final 2025 tally released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows 2,144 confirmed cases, topping the 1992 count of 2,126. Experts say cases likely are significantly undercounted as many go unreported.
Cases were reported in 45 jurisdictions in 2025, and there were 49 outbreaks, compared to 16 the previous year, according to the CDC. About 69% of the confirmed cases were among children and teens. Across all ages, 11% of patients were hospitalized and three people died, including two children.
About 93% of confirmed measles cases were among people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown.
In South Carolina, there have been 214 cases since July 9, 2025, most of which are linked to an ongoing outbreak in Spartanburg County. Recent public exposures include several elementary schools and churches. There are 144 people in quarantine and seven in isolation, according to state health officials.
Arizona and Utah also have been battling outbreaks, ending the year with 214 and 175 cases, respectively.
The U.S. eliminated measles in 2000, but as misinformation spreads, vaccination rates have gone down, and measles cases have gone up. Whether the country loses its elimination status will depend on whether the virus strain from the outbreak that began in West Texas in mid-January 2025 has continued to cause cases in the U.S. without interruption for at least 12 months. Canada lost its measles elimination status in November 2025.

Broward Health Medical Center Named Among U.S. News & World Report’s Fifth Annual 2026 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care
January 15, 2026 – U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, has named Broward Health Medical Center as a 2026 High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care. This is the highest award a hospital can earn as part of U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care annual study, now in its fifth edition.

Best Hospitals for Maternity Care ratings are intended to assist expectant parents, in consultation with their prenatal care providers, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity services that best meet their family’s needs.

Cleveland Clinic Florida Names Chad R. Ritch, M.D., Chair of the Division of Urology
January 12, 2026 – Chad R. Ritch, M.D., MBA, FACS, has been named chair of the Division of Urology for the Cleveland Clinic Florida market, effective January 2026.
Dr. Ritch is a nationally recognized urologic oncologist who has dedicated his career to advancing clinical care, research and education in urology. His expertise encompasses bladder, prostate and kidney cancer, with a focus on robotic surgery.
Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Ritch served as professor of urology and director of the Society of Urologic Oncology fellowship program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and scientific presentations, served as principal investigator on numerous clinical trials, and played a pivotal role in pioneering the single-port robotic surgical system in South Florida. Dr. Ritch was also the associate director for University of Miami international patient services and led the expansion of the health system’s global footprint.

Holy Cross Health Takes Cardiothoracic Surgery to a New Level
Esteemed surgeons Kushagra Katariya, MD, FACS and Marc Gibber, MD to lead CT surgery team
January 16, 2026 – As Holy Cross Health celebrates 70 years of serving the healthcare needs of the community, the hospital has elevated its cardiothoracic surgery program to the highest level with the addition of two internationally recognized cardiothoracic surgeons.
Leading the cardiothoracic surgery team is Kushagra Katariya, MD, FACS who was named medical director and chief of cardiothoracic surgery, and Marc Gibber, MD, who has assumed the role of surgical director of the intensive care unit. Richard and Melanie Gonzmart Gift Advances Cancer Care for Adolescents and Young Adults at TGH Cancer Institute
The Richard and Melanie Gonzmart Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Program addresses the special needs of TGH cancer patients ages 15 and up.
January 15, 2026 – The Tampa General Hospital Foundation announced today that it has received a $1 million gift from Richard and Melanie Gonzmart in support of the TGH Cancer Institute’s Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer (AYA) Program.
Now named the Richard and Melanie Gonzmart Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Program, the program helps young patients from age 15 and up who require elevated services and a holistic approach to treatment.
“Tampa General Hospital has a record of providing world-class academic health care to adolescents and young adults facing a life-changing cancer diagnosis,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Florida Health Sciences Center | Tampa General Hospital. “Richard and Melanie Gonzmart are trusted partners who will help us continue to provide hope and excellent outcomes for these patients.”

Palm Health Foundation Grant Brings Day of Wellness to School Behavioral Health Professionals at Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens
January 14, 2026 – –Thanks to a grant from Palm Health Foundation, The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens (ANSG) in West Palm Beach recently hosted a Day of Wellness for Palm Beach County School District Behavioral Health Professionals, who dedicate their lives to providing behavioral and mental health services to students. Seventy frontline mental health staff enjoyed a day of reflection, relaxation, rejuvenation, self-care, and professional development.
The Day of Wellness was created in recognition of professionals’ deep commitment to the county’s youth and the emotional toll of the high-impact services they provide as challenges among school-age children continue to rise. According to the National Survey of Children’s Health, between 2016 and 2023, the prevalence of diagnosed depression among 12–17-year-olds increased by 45 percent and diagnosed anxiety increased by 61 percent.
Set amidst ANSG’s beautiful and peaceful landscape of the sculpture gardens and the historic, inspirational Artist Studio, the program featured a series of therapeutic experiences led by local expert facilitators, including Creating a Garden of Gratitude and Hope, a therapeutic experience blending visual arts with personal reflections by Tiffany Mitchell and Amy Case of Rhythms of Hope, and Music for Mindfulness and Intention led by Bree Lukosavich. Participants also enjoyed creating a watercolor mindscape with art therapist Alicia Ballestas, exploring self-care with Shabrae Jackson, joining in a pollinator planting activity with ANSG Master Gardener CJ McCartney, and closing the day with a drumming circle led by Abasi Hanif.

The Children’s Trust Significantly Expands Comprehensive School-Based Health Services to Pre-K through 12th Grade Students with nearly $26 Million Annual Investment
January The Children’s Trust today announced a significant expansion of its HealthConnect in Our Schools initiative, marking a crucial investment in the physical and mental health and academic success of students across Miami-Dade County. Beginning in July 2025, The Trust allocated $25,824,500 annually to provide comprehensive school-based health services through six health care service agencies, reaching 283 schools.
In the previous funding cycle for this initiative, The Trust invested $16 million annually for several years, and increased to $20 million last fiscal year. This new expansion to nearly $26 million is a 29% increase from last year’s investment. The expansion will serve more than double the 141 schools that were previously supported over the past decade.

DOH-Miami-Dade Observes Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
January 15, 2026 – The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) recognizes January as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, observed to highlight the importance of prevention, early detection, and education focused on cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer, cancer of the cervix, is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide. Each year in Florida, over 1,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer. Fortunately, cervical cancer is highly curable when found and treated early, even before symptoms appear.
Screening and Detection
A Pap test and HPV (human papillomavirus) test may help prevent cervical cancer or detect it during early stages. The purpose of the Pap test is to detect abnormal cells in the cervix, and the HPV test looks for the human papillomavirus that can cause these cell changes. When abnormal cells are found and treated early, cervical cancer can be prevented or cured.
Women should talk to their health care provider to discuss when to begin cervical cancer screening and how often to be screened. The general screening recommendations follow:
Women ages 21-29 years are to be screened with a Pap test alone every three years.
Women ages 30-65 years should be screened every three years with a Pap test alone, every five years with HPV testing alone, or every five years with an HPV test along with a Pap test.
Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program
Women ages 40-64 with low income or without health insurance may be eligible for free or low-cost screening through the Florida Department of Health’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. Cervical cancer is often curable when detected and treated at an early stage. Mayo Clinic researchers use AI to predict patient falls based on core density in middle age
January 15, 2026 – Artificial intelligence (AI) applied to abdominal imaging can help predict adults at higher risk of falling as early as middle age, a new Mayo Clinic study shows. The research, published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Digital Health, highlights the importance of abdominal muscle quality, a component of core strength, as a key predictor of fall risk in adults aged 45 years and older.
Falls are a leading cause of injury, especially among older adults. Mayo Clinic researchers found that early markers of fall risk may be detectable in CT scans that many patients have for other reasons.
Working with radiology bioinformatics experts, they set out to determine whether AI-derived measurements of fat distribution, muscle size and density and bone quality could reveal early signs of noteworthy physical changes.
They found that muscle density, a measure of muscle quality, was a much stronger predictor of fall risk than muscle size.
“Muscle size is just a measure of how big your muscles are,” says lead author Jennifer St. Sauver, Ph.D., an epidemiologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. “Muscle density is different; on a CT scan, it’s a measure of how ‘dark’ and homogenous the muscles are.”

January 15, 2026- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is committed to being a responsible steward of public funds and to promoting the sustainability of its programs for future generations. While CMS’ improper payment reporting programs are designed to protect the integrity of CMS programs, improper payment measurement is not a measure of fraud, and not all improper payments are attributable to fraud or abuse. Rather, it is important to understand that improper payments are payments that do not meet CMS program payment requirements. They can be overpayments, underpayments, or payments where insufficient information was provided to determine whether a payment was proper. In some programs, improper payments involve a situation where a state or contractor misses an administrative step that had it been properly completed would have resulted in a proper payment.

Step forward for mental health: registration open, sponsors needed for annual 5k sunset walk NAMI Southwest Florida’s Sunset Strides set for March 14 in downtown Fort Myers
Jan. 15, 2026 – NAMI Southwest Florida will host the eighth annual Sunset Strides 5K on Saturday, March 14 in downtown Fort Myers. Proceeds directly support education, crisis intervention, peer-led services, and vital community resources for those affected by mental illness.
The walk to mental wellness will take a scenic sunset route from Fort Myers Centennial Park to the Edison Bridge and back. Day-of registration will open at 4 p.m., and the walk will commence at 6 p.m. The walk is open to attendees of all ages and leashed pets are welcome.
