Laser Procedure Providing Solutions for Those With Epilepsy and Brain Tumors

October 24, 2025- Patients suffering from epilepsy that can’t be controlled by medication or with cancerous brain tumors are benefitting from a procedure performed by neurosurgeons at Memorial Neuroscience Institute. Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) uses heat from laser energy to destroy abnormal cells that cause seizures and form tumors, with the minimally-invasive treatment allowing individuals to go home the next day and resume normal activities within a week.

The approach is in stark contrast to what had been the standard of care, a craniotomy where a section of the skull was removed to access the area of the brain where the problematic cells were located. With LITT, an MRI scan and electrode placement enables surgeons to pinpoint these cells and precisely deliver heat to the targeted tissue through a laser fiber inserted with the help of a robot through a small incision.

“We’re a Level 4 epilepsy center and the results we’re delivering with LITT are truly life-changing,” said Christopher DeMassi, MD, chief of the Memorial Neuroscience Institute. “Epilepsy patients that were unable to drive or go to school because of their seizures are now living normal lives that often don’t even require medication.”

Tampa General Hospital Is One of Only a Few Sites in the Southeast Participating in Clinical Trial of New Treatment for Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

The eShunt System is designed to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain without the need for open surgery. TGH is one of two sites in Florida selected to participate in the trial.

October 22, 2025 – The Neuroscience Institute at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has opened enrollment in a clinical trial for a new investigational treatment, called the eShunt System, for patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). NPH is a progressive, potentially life-threatening condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up in the ventricles of the brain. While NPH affects about 800,000 seniors in the U.S., it is widely underdiagnosed and misdiagnosed, frequently mistaken for Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia or simply normal aging. It often presents with symptoms such as gait disturbance, urinary incontinence and cognitive impairment.

The prospective multicenter STRIDE Pivotal Study, a randomized controlled trial, is led by CereVasc Inc. and managed locally by the TGH-USF Health Joint Office of Clinical Research. It will evaluate the safety and efficacy of the eShunt System, which is designed to mimic the way the body naturally drains CSF, reducing, and in some cases reversing, NPH symptoms. TGH is one of just a few select trial sites across the nation and one of only two sites in the Southeast offering the treatment.

“The addition of the eShunt system expands our treatment for NPH, offering new hope for patients who previously had limited treatment options,” said Dr. Naomi Abel, a physician with TGH, associate professor of rehabilitation medicine, director of the Adult Hydrocephalus Center in the Department of Neurosurgery, Brain and Spine at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “This marks a major step forward for our research of this condition and how we approach care and also has the potential to improve the quality of life for our NPH patients,” Abel said.

Holy Cross Health Celebrates Naming of Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr. Emergency Department

October 23, 2025 – In recognition of philanthropists Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr. and the Wanda & Jim Moran Foundation’s $6.5 million gift to Holy Cross Health, the Wanda & Jim Moran, Jr. Emergency Department (ED) was officially named during a celebration held in their honor.

One of the single largest donations in the hospital’s 70-year history, the transformational gift enabled Holy Cross Health to make advancements to the ED and to purchase the Philips Spectral CT 7500. The state-of-the-art CT scanner is now open and available to patients. This generous contribution significantly elevates the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities and ability to better serve the community with enhanced emergency care.

“At Holy Cross Health, we believe that generosity is the foundation of transformation. This gift from the Wanda and Jim Moran, Jr. Foundation is a powerful investment in the future of emergency care,” said Laura Denoux, Vice President and Chief Development Officer of Holy Cross Health Foundation. “It’s not just about naming a department. Coconut Creek Resident Finds Relief with Broward Health Imperial Point’s New Mako Robotic System

OCTOBER 23, 2025 – For Michelle Reyes, a Coconut Creek resident, the decision to move forward with knee surgery came after years of living with pain. The 58-year-old struggled to walk, to stand at her church where she volunteers as a greeter and even to enjoy simple moments like shopping or dancing.

“My knee was bone on bone,” Michelle said. “Cortisone shots helped for a while but then stopped working. I used to think knee replacement wasn’t an option until I was much older, and that meant living with pain longer than I wanted. On top of that, I was told I needed to lose weight before I could even be considered for surgery. That was discouraging, but it also motivated me to take the first step with bariatric surgery.”

Sarasota Memorial Now Enrolling Patients in Clinical Trial for Innovative AFib Treatment

Oct. 23, 2025 – Atrial fibrillation (AFib), is the most common treated heart arrhythmia, affecting over 6 million American adults. Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute is participating in the CONFORM Pivotal trial, evaluating a new investigational device that offers patients with AFib an alternative to long-term medication use. The study will help determine if the device is safer and more effective than other commercially available devices for left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion or closure.

Led locally by cardiac electrophysiologist Robert Eckart, DO, the multi-center trial will evaluate the CLAAS® system—a permanent implant in the left atrial appendage designed to seal off the LAA, a small pouch in the heart where clots often form, and lower the risk of stroke without the need of blood thinners. The CLAAS® system is intended to simplify the procedure and enhance safety for patients by utilizing a foam-based implant designed to conform to each patient’s unique anatomy.

AMA, Ad Council launch firearm injury prevention digital resource hub

October 23, 2025 – With firearm injuries the leading cause of death of children and teens in the U.S., the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Ad Council, in collaboration with a coalition of health care leaders, launched a new digital resource hub at AgreeToAgree.org/HealthCare to empower physicians and other health care professionals to confidently and compassionately engage patients in conversations about firearm injury prevention. The digital resource hub features new “Agree to Agree” campaign videos, fact sheets, toolkits and conversation guides for clinicians to help patients and their families understand the risks associated with unsecured firearms and best practices for secure storage to help reduce injuries and deaths.

The AMA, along with many national medical specialty societies, supports counseling patients on preventing firearm injuries. However, due to numerous barriers, this topic remains largely absent from clinical conversations—86% of adults say they have never been asked by a physician whether there are firearms in the home. Yet studies show that when these conversations do occur, patients are more likely to adopt safe storage practices. The new digital resource hub and “Agree to Agree” campaign videos aim to close this gap by equipping clinicians with the tools and confidence to address this issue with their patients.

AMA launches Center for Digital Health and AI

October 20, 2025 – CHICAGO — The American Medical Association (AMA) today announced the launch of its Center for Digital Health and AI, a new endeavor created to put physicians at the center of shaping, guiding, and implementing technologies transforming medicine.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital health tools are advancing rapidly, but without physician leadership and input, they risk creating unintended burdens and failing to reach their full potential. The new Center will tap the full potential of AI and digital health by embedding physicians throughout the lifecycle of technology development and deployment to ensure it fits into clinical workflow and physicians know how to utilize it.

“Augmented Intelligence will be a defining force in the future of health care, but right now we are barely scratching the surface of its potential. Digital health tools are everywhere and the technology has limitless opportunity, but if you don’t understand clinical practice or clinical workflow, even the best tools will never be fully implemented,” said AMA CEO & Executive Vice President John Whyte, MD, MPH. “By launching this Center, the AMA is leading in this space so physicians have a say in the technology and clinical care of the future. Our goal is to harness innovation responsibly and effectively, so it improves patient care and reduces unnecessary burdens on physicians.”

Hospital for Special Surgery Study Shows AI Tool Effectively Prepares Patients for Joint Replacement Surgery

October 24 ,2025 – Preparing for orthopedic surgeries such as hip or knee replacement can be stressful for patients, who often have many questions and concerns about what to expect. Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) presented new findings at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons annual meeting suggesting that artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful educational tool that can help patients feel prepared and supported before and after surgery.

HSS researchers piloted and evaluated a custom-tailored AI (CTAI) platform that was trained on patient education content developed and approved by HSS surgeons. They found that patients were able to easily access and interact with the chat bot, which provided on-demand, personalized, accurate information about their surgery.

“Our study showed that most patients found the technology easy to use and helpful in making them feel ready and confident going into surgery,” says Eytan M Debbi, MD, PhD, hip and knee replacement surgeon at HSS and senior author of the study.

HSS Research Shows “Quiet Knee” Protocol Could Redefine Knee Replacement Recovery

October 24, 2025  –  Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the world’s leading academic medical center focused on musculoskeletal health, today announced the results of a retrospective study analyzing the results of the “Quiet Knee” protocol after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), also known as knee replacement surgery. The study results were shared at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) annual meeting.

The Quiet Knee protocol, which some HSS surgeons began implementing several years ago, takes a more conservative approach to knee replacement recovery than traditional clinical protocols. This new technique focuses on controlling inflammation and swelling postoperatively through restricted mobility and passive range of motion (ROM) and aggressive cryotherapy (icing) for the first 10 days immediately following surgery. This contrasts with standard protocols, which often emphasize early and aggressive movement that can cause inflammation in surgical tissue that is healing.

All HSS total knee replacement patients from 2020 to 2024 were retrospectively reviewed as part of the study. A Quiet Knee group consisting of 271 patients received structured postoperative care and monitored telerehabilitation. One comparison group was given Quiet Knee guidance verbally, while a second cohort followed traditional early motion postoperative therapy.

Mayo Clinic collaborates on new drug study showing improved survival for early breast cancer

October 23, 2025 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic researchers collaborated on a new study showing that the drug abemaciclib improves survival for people with high-risk, early-stage breast cancer.

In the phase 3 monarchE trial, two years of abemaciclib (Verzenio) plus endocrine therapy reduced the risk of death by 15.8% compared with endocrine therapy alone among patients with a common type of early-stage breast cancer.

The clinical trial enrolled more than 5,600 patients at over 600 sites across 38 countries. All participants had breast cancer that was hormone receptor-positive (HR+) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-), a subtype that includes 70% of all breast cancers, and also had cancer in at least one underarm lymph node, a factor linked to higher risk of recurrence.

New genomic test could spare some people with melanoma from lymph node biopsy surgery

A 3D illustration shows a cross-section of skin with melanoma spreading into the bloodstream and lymphatic system. (Getty Images)
October 22, 2025  — A genomic test co-developed by Mayo Clinic and SkylineDx can identify whether people with melanoma are at low or high risk for cancer in their lymph nodes — a finding that could guide treatment decisions and help some people avoid lymph node biopsy surgery. The study results are published in JAMA Surgery.

In the largest prospective study of its kind, about 93% of people classified as low risk had no cancer in their lymph nodes, while about 25% in the high-risk group did. The multicenter clinical trial enrolled 1,761 people with early- or intermediate-stage melanoma at nine U.S. cancer centers between 2021 and 2024.

Decoding the tumor’s genomic blueprint
The test measures the activity of eight genes in a melanoma tumor and combines that data with a person’s age and tumor thickness to estimate the chance that cancer has reached the lymph nodes. The Merlin CP-GEP Test analyzes tissue from the tumor already collected during an initial biopsy, so no additional procedure or visit is required for the test.
