2024 A Banner Year for KIDZ Medical Services
By Vanessa Orr
KIDZ Medical Services, a South Florida multispecialty practice that cares for neonatal, pediatric and women’s health patients across 15 office locations and 19 hospital partner sites, has been on an upward trajectory for the past few years, and 2024 was no different. In the past year, the practice took part in nearly 130,000 patient encounters and has remained financially strong while also expanding a number of services.
“It’s been a fairly stable period,” said CEO Wayne Brackin. “While there’s no doubt that margins continue to become tighter over time and require never-ending negotiations with managed care companies to provide very high-quality services in areas where there are fewer options, we are cautiously optimistic that we will continue to have solid financial projections, in part because of the efforts of our incredible CFO, Lindsay Mendiola.”
Legislative changes focused on Level 3 neonatal ICU requirements created the opportunity for KIDZ Medical to provide telemedicine coverage to facilities all across South Florida, and may also enable them to expand these services across the country.

Mayo Clinic’s largest-ever exome study offers blueprint for biomedical breakthroughs
December 3, 2024 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic’s Center for Individualized Medicine has achieved a significant milestone with its Tapestry study, generating the clinic’s largest-ever collection of exome data, which include genes that code for proteins — key to understanding health and disease.
Led by Konstantinos Lazaridis, M.D., the study analyzed DNA from over 100,000 participants from diverse backgrounds, providing important insights into certain genetic predispositions to support personalized and proactive medical guidance.
The findings, published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, focused on pathogenic (disease-causing) and likely pathogenic genetic variants linked to three specific conditions: hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome, Lynch syndrome and familial hypercholesterolemia. Findings revealed that 1.9% of participants — nearly 2,000 people — carried at least one genetic variant that could increase their risk for these diseases. Notably, about 65% of those with a detected variant had no known prior personal or family history of the conditions.
For many participants found to carry a genetic variant, the information has been life changing. Some have taken proactive steps, such as undergoing early screenings or preventive surgeries, which in some cases led to early cancer detection or reduced their risk of heart disease.

The Role of Black Box Analysis in Healthcare Decision-Making
By Alfredo Cepero
In pursuit of improved financial performance and stability, many healthcare organizations are exploring clinical alignment or integration deals to strengthen their financial foundations.
For these strategies to succeed, however, organizations need access to the right data and information to make informed business decisions. Otherwise, their efforts to strengthen or grow their businesses could fall short, resulting in disruptions to care in their communities and financial losses.
Black box data analysis is a key component of successful healthcare deals and partnerships that can help healthcare leaders ensure physician-organization alignment.
What is black box analysis?
Black box analysis refers to an independent and confidential third-party comparison of two or more healthcare organization’s reimbursement, productivity, and compensation models.
This analysis is commonly used when health systems, academic medical centers, faculty practice plans, and medical groups are evaluating strategic physician-organization alignment models. It’s a crucial part of due diligence, practice valuation, funds flow modeling, and strategic planning that supports growth and expansion strategies and tactics. Some of the activities black box analysis supports include:
Acquisitions and divestitures Design of network development strategies
Development of community practice and private practice network models

HHS Office for Civil Rights Imposes a $1.19 Million Penalty Against Gulf Coast Pain Consultants for HIPAA Security Rule Violations
Systemic HIPAA Security Rule violations lead to OCR’s 6th penalty of the year
December 3, 2024 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced a $1.19 million civil monetary penalty against Gulf Coast Pain Consultants, LLC d/b/a Clearway Pain Solutions Institute (Gulf Coast Pain Consultants) in Florida, concerning violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Security Rule, following receipt of a breach report that a former contractor for the company had impermissibly accessed their electronic record system. OCR enforces the HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules, which set forth the requirements that health plans, health care clearinghouses, and most health care providers, and their business associates must follow to protect the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI). The HIPAA Security Rule establishes national standards to protect and secure our health care system by requiring administrative, physical and technical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and security of electronic PHI (ePHI).
“Current and former workforce can present threats to health care privacy and security—risking continuity of care and trust in our health care system,” said OCR Director Melanie Fontes Rainer. “Effective cybersecurity and compliance with the HIPAA Security Rule means being proactive in reviewing who has access to health information and responding quickly to suspected security incidents.”
