Neurologist Sara Huser, DO Joins Holy Cross Medical Group
Dr. Huser is now seeing patients at the Phil Smith Neuroscience Institute
April 21, 2026 – Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has no cure. For thousands of Americans living with this disease, access to a specialist who understands it deeply and can help navigate its progression makes a tremendous difference in quality of life.
Fortunately, Broward County residents can find this level of specialized care close to home at the Holy Cross Health Phil Smith Neuroscience Institute.
The newest neurologist to join Holy Cross Medical Group, a multi-specialty physician-employed group of more than 180 physicians providing services throughout Broward County, is Sara Huser, DO, who brings fellowship-trained expertise in neuromuscular medicine to the Phil Smith Neuroscience Institute.
“I am drawn to Holy Cross Health’s mission of providing compassionate, patient-centered care and its commitment to serving the community with dignity and respect. At Holy Cross, care is rooted not only in clinical excellence, but also in empathy, service and faith. This aligns deeply with how I practice medicine,” said Dr. Huser. “South Florida is a diverse, growing community with a significant need for specialized neuromuscular care. Holy Cross offers the infrastructure, collaborative environment and mission-driven culture necessary to truly support patients with complex nerve and muscle diseases, making it an ideal fit for both my values and professional goals.”

| Delray Medical Center First Hospital in Palm Beach County to Complete Procedure Using New Pulsed Field Ablation to Treat AFib
April 20, 2026 –Delray Medical Center is the first hospital in Palm Beach County to complete a procedure using the new Abbott’s Volt Pulsed Field Ablation System (PFA) to treat AFib. Electrophysiologist Dr. Yoel Vivas performed the milestone procedure.
Approximately 12 million people in the United States over the age of 65 have AFib, a number expected to double over the next 20 years. People living with AFib face a fivefold increased risk of stroke, and AFib has been the primary or a contributing cause of death for more than two decades in the United States ii. When medication and other treatment options fail to work, many patients rely on cardiac ablation – a minimally invasive procedure to stop an irregular heart rhythm – to effectively treat the condition.
“Delray Medical Center continues to invest in some of the latest medical technology, including for our patient’s hearts,” said Delray Medical Center CEO, Heather Havericak. “Adding the Volt provides our physicians another tool to treat patients as effectively as possible, so they can get back to doing the things they love.”
“Atrial fibrillation and cardiac arrhythmias negatively impact the lives of millions in the United States and around the world. Beyond the daily strain it can cause through shortness of breath, dizziness and chest pain; patients with untreated arrhythmias are at an increased risk of stroke and heart attack. The growing adoption of pulsed field ablation technology delivers promise to these patients, and Abbott’s state-of-the-art system overcomes previous limitations with earlier generation PFA technologies,” said Christopher Piorkowski, M.D., chief medical officer of Abbott’s electrophysiology business.

Sylvester Cancer Tip Sheet for April 2026
APRIL 2026 TIP SHEET
Cancer Risk
Sylvester Study Finds Adults Who Never Married Face Significantly Higher Cancer Risk
Adults who have never been married face a significantly higher risk of developing cancer than those who are or have been married, according to a U.S. study of more than 4 million cases led by Sylvester researchers. The study, published April 8 in Cancer Research Communications, found the increased risk spans nearly all cancer types and is especially pronounced for preventable cancers – those linked to infections, smoking and reproductive factors. “These findings suggest that social factors such as marital status may serve as important markers of cancer risk at the population level,” explained study co-author Paulo Pinheiro, M.D., Ph.D.
Kidney Cancer Circulating Tumor DNA Analysis With Tissue Sequencing Uncovers Hidden Kidney Cancer Mutations
Combining blood-based circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) analysis with next-generation tissue sequencing can reveal key kidney cancer mutations often missed by standard testing alone, a Sylvester-led study has found. The analysis of 392 patients found this complementary approach identified 6% more genetic mutations, with the biggest gains occurring with metastatic kidney cancer. The findings, which appeared April 2 in The Oncologist, suggest longer-term studies might identify biomarkers of treatment response and lead to better outcomes in patients with advanced disease.

Mount Sinai Medical Center Named One of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals 2026 by Newsweek
National recognition highlights the medical center’s commitment to safe, high-quality, patient-centered maternity care
April 22, 2026— Mount Sinai Medical Center has been named one of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals 2026 by Newsweek and Statista, a recognition that reflects the medical center’s longstanding dedication to providing exceptional care for mothers and newborns across South Florida. Mount Sinai delivers approximately 2,200 babies annually at its Miami Beach campus.
The annual ranking evaluates hospitals nationwide based on clinical quality metrics, patient experience data, and peer recommendations from maternity care professionals, including neonatal and perinatal physicians, nurses, and midwives.
“Welcoming a new life into the world is one of the most profound responsibilities in health care, and this recognition reflects the standard of maternity care our teams deliver every day,” said Gino R. Santorio, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Medical Center. “Every year, thousands of families trust us with one of the most important moments of their lives. That responsibility drives our continued investment in the people, programs, and facilities that make this level of care possible.”
At a time when hospitals across South Florida and the nation are closing labor and delivery units, Mount Sinai is moving in the opposite direction. The medical center is preparing to begin construction on a fully renovated labor and delivery floor on its Miami Beach campus, designed to offer a modern, family-centered environment with enhanced comfort, privacy, and clinical capabilities. The project reflects Mount Sinai’s belief that maternity care is not only essential to the community but worthy of continued investment.

New ‘State of the Air’ Report Finds Air Quality Worsens Slightly in Several Florida Cities
Federal actions threaten progress in protecting Florida children from air pollution, according to the American Lung Association’s “State of the Air” report
MIAMI –April 22, 2026 – Today, the American Lung Association released its 27th annual “State of the Air” report, which finds nearly half of the children in the U.S. are breathing unhealthy levels of air pollution. The report focuses on the health consequences of air pollution, with a focus on children, including the risks facing Florida’s 4.5 million children. Research shows air quality in the Greater Miami area declined slightly, exposing residents to more unhealthy ozone pollution and placing the region as the 132nd most polluted in the nation for ozone.
The Lung Association’s “State of the Air” report analyzes air quality data from 2022-2024 to grade counties on unhealthy levels of ozone (smog) and particle pollution (soot) and ranks counties and metro areas among the cleanest and most polluted. Both pollutants are linked to premature death and serious health impacts, including asthma attacks, heart disease, stroke, preterm birth, cognitive impairment, and lung cancer.

Golf tournament, auction and helicopter ball drop benefit local cancer patients, families
