2. Get a notebook and keep record of all the important numbers, names, contact information, letters & phone calls to and from the insurance company.
3. Be proactive in the claims process. Do not wait for the insurance company to get back to you. If you write them a letter and they do not respond write another letter stating exactly that. It's very important to build a paper trail between you and the insurance company. 4. The insurance company is a for profit company. Think of your claim as a negotiation.

GIVING TRAUMA PATIENTS A FIGHTING CHANCE
August 29, 2023 – Dr. James Roach is on a mission to help more trauma patients have access to a potentially lifesaving and relatively simple treatment – a whole blood transfusion – before they arrive at the hospital.
Dr. Roach, who is the system chief of emergency services at Broward Health and the District Chief of Emergency Medicine, worked with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO) to establish the whole blood program in Broward County, making it the first in the state of Florida.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) teams at the BSO have been trained and equipped to administer whole blood transfusions to trauma patients who are hemorrhaging before they are transported to the hospital.
This is a big change, as historically, EMS teams have mostly used isotonic IV fluids to treat hemorrhaging patients until they can get them to a hospital. These IV fluids have lots of negative effects, from diluting coagulation to making the patient’s body colder, explains Dr. Roach.
“We are giving these patients a fighting chance that they have never had before,” said Health Clark, Division Chief of EMS at the BSO’s Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services.
On a recent evening around midnight, a battalion chief called Dr. Roach to ask for his help with a young woman in a serious car crash. Her legs were stuck under a collapsed dashboard, and she was going into hemorrhagic shock from internal injuries and bleeding. The crash occurred five minutes away from Broward Health North, but paramedics couldn’t get her out of the vehicle and were considering whether they needed to call a physician to perform an emergency amputation to save her life. Instead, paramedics gave her a whole blood transfusion while they worked to extricate her from the vehicle, and she survived and recovered fully, Dr. Roach said.

AMAVITA HEART AND VASCULAR HEALTHTM RAISES AWARENESS ABOUT PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE
Leading healthcare provider urges community members to prioritize their vascular health and get screened this September
AUGUST 28, 2023 – In recognition of September being Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Month, Amavita Heart and Vascular HealthTM, a trusted name in cardiac and vascular care, is committed to raising awareness about PAD and encouraging individuals to take proactive steps towards better vascular health. PAD is a serious condition that affects blood flow to the limbs and can lead to severe complications if left untreated. Through education and early detection, Amavita aims to empower the community to prioritize their circulatory health and seek timely screenings.
PAD occurs when there is a buildup of fatty deposits (plaque) in the arteries that supply blood to the extremities, most commonly the legs. This condition can result in reduced blood flow, leading to leg pain, cramping, weakness, and even non-healing wounds. Left unaddressed, PAD can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular complications.

THE ONGOING DEBATE OVER SITE-NEUTRAL PAYMENTS
By Jarrod Fowler, MHA, FMA Director of Healthcare Policy and Innovation
One of the debates raging in the healthcare policy community is what, if anything, should be done about the higher costs associated with hospital outpatient care relative to the care provided at independent physician practices. On one hand, it has been argued that some of these higher costs, such as facility fees in the private market, drive up costs for patients, particularly in consolidated markets. Meanwhile, insurers only occasionally possess the market power to reign in facility fees, albeit at the expense of agreeing to increase reimbursement for other services.
Some states, such as Connecticut, Indiana, and Maine, have already begun taking action against certain types of facility fees. Again, the efficacy of this approach is debatable since hospitals in consolidated markets may attempt to offset the loss of income associated with these facility fees by increasing their professional charges and taking other measures that ultimately lead insurers to pay the same costs in totality.

U.S. FDA APPROVES BRISTOL MYERS SQUIBB’S REBLOZYL® (LUSPATERCEPT-AAMT) AS FIRST-LINE TREATMENT OF ANEMIA IN ADULTS WITH LOWER-RISK MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROMES (MDS) WHO MAY REQUIRE TRANSFUSIONS
Reblozyl is the first and only therapy to demonstrate superiority compared to an erythropoiesis stimulating agent (ESA) in MDS-related anemia based on interim results from pivotal Phase 3 COMMANDS trial, expanding approved population to ESA-naïve patients, regardless of ring sideroblast status
August 28, 2023 – PRINCETON, N.J.–Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Reblozyl® (luspatercept-aamt) for the treatment of anemia without previous erythropoiesis stimulating agent use (ESA-naïve) in adult patients with very low- to intermediate-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) who may require regular red blood cell (RBC) transfusions. This expanded indication to the first-line setting is based on interim results from the pivotal Phase 3 COMMANDS trial, in which Reblozyl demonstrated superior efficacy of concurrent RBC transfusion independence (RBC-TI) and hemoglobin (Hb) increase compared to epoetin alfa, an ESA, regardless of ring sideroblast status. These results underscore Reblozyl’sability to address chronic anemia earlier in the treatment journey in a broader range of patients.

HHS SELECTS THE FIRST DRUGS FOR MEDICARE DRUG PRICE NEGOTIATION
For the first time, Medicare will be able to negotiate prices directly with drug companies, lowering prices on some of the costliest prescription drugs.
August 29, 2023 – For the first time, thanks to President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act – the historic law lowering health care costs – Medicare is able to negotiate the prices of prescription drugs. Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), announced the first 10 drugs covered under Medicare Part D selected for negotiation. The negotiations with participating drug companies will occur in 2023 and 2024, and any negotiated prices will become effective beginning in 2026. Medicare enrollees taking the 10 drugs covered under Part D selected for negotiation paid a total of $3.4 billion in out-of-pocket costs in 2022 for these drugs.
The Biden-Harris Administration has made lowering prescription drug costs and improving access to innovative therapies a key priority. Alongside other provisions in the new law that increase the affordability of health care and prescription drugs, allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices will strengthen the program’s ability to serve people with Medicare now and for generations to come. The negotiation process will consider the selected drug’s clinical benefit, the extent to which it fulfills an unmet medical need, and its impact on people who rely on Medicare, among other considerations, such as costs associated with research and development as well as production and distribution for selected drugs. As a result of negotiations, people with Medicare will have access to innovative, life-saving treatments at lower costs to Medicare.
The selected drug list for the first round of negotiation is:
Eliquis Jardiance Xarelto Januvia Farxiga Entresto Enbrel Imbruvica Stelara Fiasp; Fiasp FlexTouch; Fiasp PenFill; NovoLog; NovoLog FlexPen; NovoLog PenFill

CTE IDENTIFIED IN BRAIN DONATIONS FROM YOUNG AMATEUR ATHLETES
Study examined athletes who played contact sports, showed CTE symptoms, and died before age 30
August 28, 2023 – In a study of 152 deceased athletes less than 30 years old who were exposed to repeated head injury through contact sports, brain examination demonstrated that 63 (41%) had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disorder associated with exposure to head trauma. Neuropsychological symptoms were severe in both those with and without evidence of CTE. Suicide was the most common cause of death in both groups, followed by unintentional overdose.
Among the brain donors found to have CTE, 71% had played contact sports at a non-professional level (youth, high school, or college competition). Common sports included American football, ice hockey, soccer, rugby, and wrestling. The study, published in JAMA Neurology, confirms that CTE can occur even in young athletes exposed to repetitive head impacts. The research was supported in part by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health.

NIH-FUNDED STUDY SUPPORTS USE OF ECMO FOR CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS WITH OBESITY
ECMO does not appear to complicate treatment for severe respiratory failure for adults with obesity.
August 28, 2023 – A National Institutes of Health-supported study suggests that adults with obesity may benefit from the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(link is external) (ECMO), an advanced form of breathing support, when in intensive care for respiratory failure. ECMO’s use was previously questioned for patients with obesity due to the belief that it may complicate treatment. However, the current findings, which published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine(link is external), show that patients with obesity who received ECMO for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) had lower mortality rates compared to patients with ARDS without obesity who received ECMO.
In this study, researchers retrospectively reviewed data from 790 patients from more than 20 medical centers across 10 countries who received ECMO for ARDS, a critical lung injury. Among these patients, 320 had obesity. They found 24% of patients with obesity died in the intensive care unit compared to 35% of patients without obesity. The authors couldn’t control for all variables among the larger group analysis, including disease severity. However, they conclude the findings support the concept that obesity, a risk factor for ARDS, shouldn’t factor into treatment decisions for ECMO.
“We hope that clinicians will consider the data from this study when making bedside decisions for ARDS patients with obesity instead of preemptively withholding this lifesaving therapy,” said Darya Rudym, M.D., a study author, pulmonologist, and assistant professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, New York City.
