POWERING PREDICTIVE STAFFING IN HEALTHCARE WITH AI

Predictive staffing helps ensure the right people are available at the right time to provide the right care.

By: Alfredo Cepero, Principal, Assurance Market Leader, BDO, can be reached at (305) 420-8006 or acepero@bdo.com

The healthcare labor shortage is still affecting staffing levels for provider organizations — and creating financial strain. Predictive staffing optimizes staffing levels and may help organizations better provide timely and safe care while saving money.

This methodology uses historical data, such as specific dates, the season or time of year, weather, and other factors to help determine the number and types of clinicians and other workers a healthcare organization needs to staff on certain shifts.

Nursing, medical technologist, and medical assistant roles tend to be the most conducive to predictive staffing, but it can also be used with some physician roles. While predictive staffing itself is not a new concept, artificial intelligence (AI) presents opportunities for healthcare providers to use the methodology more efficiently — and to begin exploring other ways to implement AI technology throughout their organizations.

HCA FLORIDA BLAKE HOSPITAL RECEIVES TRAUMA VERIFICATION FROM AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS

February 12, 2024 – The trauma center at HCA Florida Blake Hospital has been verified as a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT), the highest possible designation.

Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and the highest level of institutional performance, as outlined by the ACS COT in its current manual, Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient.

“This verification signifies HCA Florida Blake Hospital’s commitment to deliver the highest level of trauma care,” said Steve Young, Chief Executive Officer of HCA Florida Blake Hospital. “Our trusted team shows up for our community when minutes count to provide this advanced, life-saving care to residents in Manatee County and surrounding areas.”

There are two levels of ACS trauma center verification, each defined by specific standards that speak to the important roles of the center in serving its community. These standards clarify the care that must be available to the injured patient at the facility, along with other expectations related to research and educational contributions to advance the field and to ensure the availability of highly qualified trauma providers in the future.

HSS RESEARCH EVALUATES WHETHER AI CHATBOTS PROVIDE RELIABLE MEDICAL INFORMATION

February 12, 2024 – Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are more accurate than expected when asked to answer medical questions about spine surgery, but patients still need to use extreme caution when turning to these tools for help with medical decision-making. That’s according to a study from HSS researchers being presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual meeting.

“In the past 20 years, the Internet has been probably the number-one place that people go for medical information,” says Sheeraz Qureshi, MD, MBA, co-chief of HSS Spine and co-author of the study. “I haven’t yet heard from any patients who have used ChatGPT or other chatbots in this way, but it’s definitely where we see things going. The same way that people use search engines to look for medical information now, we expect they will use chatbots in the future, including in their decision-making process.”

For this study a team of investigators identified nine frequently asked questions about cervical spine surgery, which they considered to be of particular clinical relevance. Question topics ranged from the benefits and drawbacks of different surgical approaches to side effects and recovery after surgery. The questions were inputted one at a time into ChatGPT version 3.5.

TAMPA GENERAL CELEBRATES 100TH ROBOTIC BRONCHOSCOPY

An innovative robotic bronchoscope called Ion continues to help doctors save lives and keep TGH at the forefront of lung cancer treatment.

February 13, 2024 – Medical teams at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) have successfully demonstrated in 100 cases that a relatively new and minimally invasive robotic technique can improve and even save the lives of patients with various stages of lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women in the United States, causing more than 127,000 deaths last year. Only prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women are more prevalent, according to the American Cancer Society. In January, Tampa General interventional pulmonologists conducted their 100th bronchoscopy using the Ion Endoluminal System, an automated platform for minimally invasive lung biopsies.

“First used at Tampa General in May 2023, Ion is now proving to be a substantial weapon in the war on cancer,” said Dr. Alberto Goizueta, Tampa General’s medical director of Interventional Pulmonology, and assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

“The Ion robot has unquestionably improved our ability to biopsy small peripheral nodules with excellent accuracy,’’ he said. “This has allowed us to diagnose patients with lung cancer much earlier, which ultimately leads to better outcomes. Our Thoracic Oncology team is extremely happy with the tool’s ability to improve our patients’ lives and we’re looking forward to using it for many more cases in the future.’’

JUPITER MEDICAL CENTER CELEBRATES 45TH ANNIVERSARY

Leadership reflects on 45 years of growth and looks ahead to future

February 14, 2024 – Jupiter Medical Center is celebrating 45 years of service as the area’s only independent, not-for-profit hospital in its region. The hospital opened its doors for patient care on February 14, 1979, as a 34-bed facility treating just 1,800 patients a year. Today, the health system employs more than 2,500 dedicated team members, oversees 400 volunteers and has over 750 affiliated physicians to care for nearly 400,000 patients annually. Leadership for the hospital is reflecting on the organization’s tremendous growth while also looking ahead to the future.

“Jupiter Medical Center started as a local hospital for emergency access,” said Amit Rastogi, MD, MHCM, President and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “But as the population grew, we worked diligently to evolve in order to meet the needs of the community and the region. Today, we’ve expanded the depth and breadth of our clinical services, and we are the number one rated hospital in our region for patient safety, healthcare quality and patient experience.”

Jupiter Medical Center’s stellar reputation is supported by peer, industry and community accolades from local, regional and national organizations. Notably, in December, Jupiter Medical Center was the only hospital in Palm Beach County to earn the recognition of “Top Hospital” from The Leapfrog Group, the most elite distinction given by the national not-for-profit patient safety watchdog group. The recognition followed an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from the same organization one month prior.

SANDALWOOD OIL BY-PRODUCT PREVENTS PROSTATE CANCER DEVELOPMENT IN MICE

Natural Compound Decreases Incidence of Prostate Tumors Without Weight Loss or Noticeable Side Effects

February 13, 2024 – Extracted from the core of sandalwood trees (santalum album tree), sandalwood oil has been used for many centuries by several cultures throughout the world for perfume, soaps, incense and candles. With its earthy sweet scent, this essential oil also is used in the food industry and topically in various cosmetic preparations.

Importantly, this natural oil is known for its health benefits and medicinal applications from antibacterial to anticancer because of its phytochemical constituents. In addition to containing esters, free acids, aldehydes, ketones and santenone, sandalwood oil primarily (90 percent or more) constitutes santalol – equal amounts of two compounds, alpha and beta-santalol.

Now, researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine and collaborators are the first to demonstrate in vivo the chemo-preventive properties of alpha-santalol against prostate cancer development using a transgenic mouse model.

Results of the study, published in the journal Phytomedicine Plus, showed that administration of alpha-santalol decreased the incidence of prostate tumors by decreasing cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis, without causing weight loss or any noticeable side effects. Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a method the body uses to get rid of unneeded or abnormal cells such as cancer cells.
