Hospice: A Vital Safety Net for Sepsis Survivors
By Lauren Loftis, MD
Sepsis remains one of the most complex and deadly medical conditions treated in hospitals today. While many patients survive the acute phase thanks to rapid, evidence-based interventions, their journey is far from over once they leave the ICU. In fact, for patients with advanced illness or multiple comorbidities, the post-sepsis period is often marked by functional decline, emotional distress, and a high risk of rehospitalization or death.
As healthcare professionals, we are trained to respond swiftly to sepsis alerts, initiate aggressive treatment, and stabilize patients. But we must also recognize our responsibility to guide patients and families through the longer, more uncertain path that follows discharge. This is where hospice care can and should play a transformative role.
Hospice is not a last resort. It is a proactive, compassionate model of care that prioritizes comfort, dignity, and quality of life. For sepsis survivors with advanced illness, hospice offers a bridge between high-intensity hospital care and the realities of life at home. It provides interdisciplinary support—including a physician, nurse, hospice aide, social worker, chaplain, volunteer, and bereavement specialist—tailored to the patient’s evolving needs.

Innovation in epilepsy care: Alternatives to medication seek to reset, repair brain, expert explains
November is Epilepsy Awareness Month
OCTOBER 14, 2025 – PHOENIX — Medication has long been the cornerstone of treatment for people with epilepsy, but it doesn’t stop seizures for everyone and may come with significant side effects. New options in use or under development include devices and gene and cell therapies aimed at resetting or rehabilitating the brain circuits that cause seizures, explains Dr. Jonathon Parker, a neurosurgeon at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and director of the Device-Based Neuroelectronics Research Lab.
The objective is a personalized approach that provides patients with the safest, most effective treatment options for them, Dr. Parker says.
“Epilepsy on its own is very impactful on quality of life. You have these intermittent, unpredictable events or spells — electrical storms in the brain — that can affect your ability to communicate and control your body. Often, people lose consciousness,” he says. “It’s a really challenging disease to live with.”
Medication controls seizures in many patients, but it can come with side effects such as sleepiness, cognitive changes, mood changes and a feeling of mental fogginess, further affecting quality of life, Dr. Parker explains.
Epilepsy is one of the world’s most common neurological diseases. Roughly 50 million people have it, global statistics show. It can affect anyone of any age. Possible causes include genetics, brain damage, brain tumors, stroke and other blood vessel diseases, and some infections. Often, the cause of a person’s epilepsy remains unknown.

NCH is First in Florida Selected for National ALIYA PEF Galvanize Clinical Trial
October 15, 2025 – Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) has been selected as the first medical center in Florida to participate in the national, FDA regulated, ALIYA Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) Galvanize Trial, marking another milestone in expanding access to advanced, life-changing clinical research in the state of Florida.
The PEF Galvanize Trial is a multi-center registry designed to evaluate the clinical application, safety, and real-world outcomes of the ALIYA PEF System – an emerging, non-thermal ablation technology that represents a new frontier in precision lung treatment. The registry began enrolling patients in August 2025. Up to 1,000 patients across 50 centers in the U.S. are expected to participate, with each followed for up to 24 months.
The ALIYA PEF System delivers short, high-voltage electrical pulses, either through the skin or through a small scope placed in the airway, to induce targeted cell death without damaging surrounding sensitive structures such as airways and blood vessels. Unlike traditional thermal ablation techniques, this non-thermal pulsed electric field (PEF) approach preserves surrounding tissue, allowing treatment of lesions in complex or previously irradiated regions.

AHA explains limits of hospital price cap simulator for states in Health Affairs essay
OCTOBER 14, 2025 – An AHA-authored essay published by Health Affairs today analyzes why a hospital price cap simulator tool, created by Brown University’s Center for Advancing Health Policy through Research, has limited use. The tool is designed to estimate potential savings if states impose caps on commercial hospital rates for their employee health plans. The AHA’s John Allison, senior associate director of health policy and analytics, Molly Smith, group vice president of public policy analysis and development, and Aaron Wesolowski, vice president of research strategy and policy communications, shared various concerns about the tool’s applicability and that its use would likely lead to broad, unreliable estimates lacking substantive context. They said state policy makers should exercise caution when using the simulator for estimates, as it fails to account for nuances and variation in existing state policies, including a misrepresentation of Oregon’s hospital payment cap. They added that the use of RAND Hospital Price Transparency Study data likely underrepresents state employee health plan data.
