Nicklaus Children’s is First in Florida to Offer Carpediem Device to Enhance Dialysis Treatment of Infants
February 19, 2025 – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has acquired Mozarc Medical’s Carpediem™ Cardio Renal Pediatric Dialysis Emergency Machine designed to support dialysis treatment of newborns with acute kidney injury and fluid overload. The hospital is the first in Florida to offer this new system designed to optimize care for the smallest patients.
Created on a miniaturized platform, the device provides continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) for patients weighing between 2.5 and 10 kilograms. The device is designed to deliver treatment with precise control by including high-precision scales and sensors to monitor fluid balance, blood leaks and air bubbles.
“CRRT treatments have been far more challenging in infants because dialysis equipment has not been perfectly suited for the care of the smallest and most fragile patients,” said Dr. Nicole M. Christin, medical director of the dialysis unit at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and chief of pediatric nephrology for Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists. “The Carpediem system is a terrific advancement, designed expressly to meet the need of our youngest patients. It enhances the precision of neonatal CRRT treatment and lowers exposure to risks, enabling us to provide the very best possible care to children in our community and beyond.”

15th Annual Holy Cross Golf Classic Raises Funds for Partners in Breast Health Program and New Mammography Machine
February 18, 2025 – The 15th Annual Holy Cross Health Golf Classic on February 5 at Coral Ridge Country Club, presented by The Harry T. Mangurian, Jr. Foundation, raised more than $279,000 to support the Partners in Breast Health program and to fund a new mammography machine for the Holy Cross Health Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center.
Since 2011, the Partners in Breast Health program has provided breast health services to uninsured and underserved women. Minority women face disproportionately high breast cancer mortality rates due to late-stage diagnoses and lack of access to care. This program bridges that gap by offering outreach education, clinical breast exams, screening mammograms and diagnostic procedures to women who lack access to healthcare services. A new mammography machine for the Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center will allow Holy Cross Health to screen more patients, reduce wait times and provide faster, more accurate results, all while enhancing patient comfort. These initiatives ensure that every woman, regardless of their circumstances, has access to the care she needs.
“Philanthropy, through efforts like this golf tournament, is the driving force behind sustaining critical and vital initiatives that empower women. The impact will be felt across our community for years to come,” said Rob Casalou, Interim President & CEO of Holy Cross Health. “It’s been incredible to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship in support of a cause that truly matters.”

Cleveland Clinic Announces Rollout of Ambience Healthcare’s AI Platform
Ambient AI technology can help reduce clinician burnout and enhance patient care
February 18, 2025 – CLEVELAND AND SAN FRANCISCO: Cleveland Clinic has announced the rollout of Ambience’s AI platform for documentation, clinical documentation integrity (CDI), and point of care coding. This technology aims to provide more time for personal interaction during visits and reduce the administrative workload for caregivers.
Later this month, Cleveland Clinic clinicians will have access to AI documentation software that records patient appointments and generates comprehensive medical notes. The notes are then reviewed and approved by the provider and uploaded to the patient’s medical record. This technology also generates customized after-visit summaries for patients, their families, and caregivers.
“The promise of AI in healthcare is that it will enable us to care for patients with a higher level of safety and quality, and a better patient and caregiver experience,” said Rohit Chandra, Ph.D., Chief Digital Officer for Cleveland Clinic. “Our implementation of ambient AI technology delivers on that promise because it helps our providers fully engage with their patients, saves time, and alleviates some of their administrative burden.”

Rising U.S. Childhood ADHD, Anxiety and ASD Tied to Caregiver Mental Health
FAU Researchers Analyze Trends in Childhood Behavioral, Mental and Developmental Disorders (2019 to 2022)
February 18, 2025 – Childhood mental, behavioral and developmental disorders include conditions like anxiety, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depression, which can affect a child’s well-being, starting as early as preschool.
A study from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine provides updated estimates on changes in U.S. childhood behavioral, mental and developmental disorders in children ages 6 to 11 from 2019 to 2022. Using data from the National Survey of Children’s Health, the study links the prevalence of these disorders with caregiver mental health, highlighting the significant impact of caregiver well-being on children’s health.
Results, published in the journal Pediatric Reports, reveal that from 2019 to 2022, several of these childhood disorders saw significant trends in increased prevalence and severity. Researchers found substantial associations between severe childhood anxiety and “fair” or “poor” caregiver rankings of mental and emotional health for both the 2020 and 2022 survey years.
The study also found that caregiver mental and emotional health may play a role in childhood attention deficit disorder (ADD) and ADHD prevalence rates as caregivers who ranked their mental health as “fair” or “good” had significantly higher odds of having a child with severe ADD or ADHD than caregivers who reported “excellent” mental and emotional health.

5 things to know about fainting: The heart’s role and when it may signal a serious condition
February 18, 2025 - MAYO CLINIC: You may have heard that people who feel faint should sit with their heads between their knees, but is that true? And how can you tell whether you or someone else who has fainted should go to the emergency department or perhaps even see a cardiologist? Elijah Behr, M.D., a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic Healthcare in London, explains five things it is important to know about fainting.
Fainting or blacking out, also known as syncope, is a temporary loss of consciousness due to insufficient blood flow to the brain.
There are different types of syncope Vasovagal syncope is the medical term for the most benign kind of fainting, simple fainting without a serious underlying cause, Dr. Behr explains. This type of fainting is common.
“In some people, if they have a drop in blood pressure from emotional distress, pain, illness or dehydration, for example, or just generally have a low blood pressure, any provocation causes a reflex in the heart,” Dr. Behr says. “Rather than the heart speeding up and pumping more forcefully to maintain the blood pressure, it starts to slow down. The blood pressure drops, the heart rate slows further, and the heart can pause for many seconds; sometimes close to a minute for some people who have more severe fainting episodes.”
Usually with this type of fainting, the person falls to the floor, blood pressure returns to the brain and the person starts to recover. However, if someone faints in a vulnerable location or vulnerable position, it can be dangerous to that person and others, Dr. Behr notes.
The syncope that most concerns healthcare professionals is cardiac syncope, blacking out due to an underlying heart disease such as a heart rhythm abnormality, or arrhythmia, he explains.

NCH Wingard Stroke Institute Pioneers Advanced Stroke Treatment with FDA-Approved Neuroguard IEP System
February 19, 2025 – Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) continues to lead the way in stroke care. The NCH Wingard Stroke Institute is proud to announce that it is among the first hospitals in the nation to perform the FDA-approved Neuroguard Integrated Embolic Protection (IEP) procedure, a groundbreaking treatment for patients with carotid artery disease. NCH Wingard Stroke Institute is one of only five Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Centers in the state of Florida, underscoring its commitment to delivering the highest level of stroke care.
Developed by Contego Medical, the Neuroguard IEP System is a revolutionary three-in-one carotid stenting solution that integrates a high-performance stent, a dilation balloon, and a protective filter that has pores up to four times smaller than traditional filters and mesh-covered stents. This advanced technology streamlines the carotid stenting procedure, reducing the number of steps and significantly improving safety by capturing particles or clots that can travel in the bloodstream that traditional systems may miss. The result is faster, more effective treatment that enhances patient outcomes when every second counts.
Clinical studies have demonstrated unprecedented low event rates with the Neuroguard IEP System—zero major strokes, zero neurologic deaths, and zero stent thrombosis at both 30 days and one year.

Mass polio vaccination campaign to continue in the Gaza Strip
February 19 2025 – Joint News Release, Jerusalem/Amman/Geneva — The emergency polio outbreak response in the Gaza Strip is continuing, with a mass vaccination campaign scheduled from 22 to 26 February 2025. The novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) will be administered to over 591,000 children under 10 years of age to protect them from polio. This campaign follows the recent detection of poliovirus in wastewater samples in Gaza, signaling ongoing circulation in the environment, putting children at risk.
Pockets of individuals with low or no immunity provide the virus an opportunity to continue spreading and potentially cause disease. The current environment in Gaza, including overcrowding in shelters and severely damaged water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure, which facilitates fecal-oral transmission, create ideal conditions for further spread of poliovirus. Extensive population movement consequent to the current ceasefire is likely to exacerbate the spread of poliovirus infection.
