Op-Ed: Broward County Deserves a Unified, World-Class Cancer Program
March 9, 2026 – In Broward County, cancer touches nearly every family. It does not discriminate by ZIP code, hospital district, insurance status, or hospital affiliation. For patients facing the most difficult diagnosis of their lives, what matters most is simple: access to the best possible care, close to home.
For more than 25 years, Memorial Cancer Institute has built a comprehensive cancer program rooted in research, clinical trials, disease-specific expertise, and true multidisciplinary collaboration. What began as a regional effort has evolved into a mature oncology program capable of delivering advanced therapies, personalized treatment plans, and coordinated supportive care.
Now, Broward County has an opportunity to take the next logical step: expanding that proven model through collaboration with Broward Health. This is not about branding or merging. It is about raising the standard of cancer care across our community.
Modern oncology is extraordinarily complex. Breast cancer is no longer treated as a single disease; it is defined by molecular subtype. Lung cancer therapy depends on genetic mutations and biomarker testing. Immunotherapy, targeted agents, precision radiation, genetic counseling, survivorship planning, and palliative care must be coordinated seamlessly to deliver optimal outcomes.
That level of care requires infrastructure: research nurses, data teams, tumor boards, subspecialists, trial coordinators, and quality monitoring systems. Over the past quarter century, Memorial Cancer Institute has built that infrastructure.

| Baptist Health Foundation Receives $5 Million Grant from Elaine and Eduardo Saverin Foundation to Benefit Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute
March 11, 2026 – Baptist Health Foundation announced today that it has received a $5 million grant from the Elaine and Eduardo Saverin Foundation benefiting Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute.
The Elaine and Eduardo Saverin Parkinson’s Disease Fund will support the Institute’s Parkinson’s disease clinical care program, which will focus on medical care, research, community outreach and technological innovation for patients with Parkinson’s disease. The Foundation will be recognized with the naming of the Elaine and Eduardo Saverin Foundation Auditorium at the planned Kenneth C. Griffin Center at Miami Neuroscience Institute, to be unveiled upon the opening of the Center.
“We’re extremely grateful to Elaine and Eduardo Saverin for this generous grant,” said Alex Villoch, CEO of Baptist Health Foundation. “Their commitment to supporting medical innovation and research perfectly aligns with Miami Neuroscience Institute’s bold vision to drive discoveries and provide extraordinary, compassionate care. Founded in 2023, the Elaine and Eduardo Saverin Foundation is dedicated to creating lasting impact in healthcare, mental health, education, and wildlife conservation and regenerative futures. The grant benefiting Miami Neuroscience Institute is intended to address urgent needs of Parkinson’s disease patients and increase awareness of the disease while advancing breakthroughs to transform treatment for future generations.

Helen Visco of Holy Cross Health Selected for 2026 AACVPR Leadership Development Academy
March 5, 2026 – Holy Cross Health is proud to announce that Helen Visco, Manager of the COPD Clinic at the Catherine Yardley Comprehensive Pulmonary Center, has been selected to join the 2026 cohort of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (ACCVPR) Leadership Development Academy. This distinction recognizes professionals who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to advancing cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and patient-centered care.
“Being selected for the 2026 cohort of the ACCVPR Leadership Development Academy is both an honor and a responsibility,” said Helen. “Personally, it affirms my commitment to lifelong learning and servant leadership. Professionally, it validates the work we are doing to elevate pulmonary rehabilitation and COPD care as essential, high-impact services for our community.”
The ACCVPR Leadership Development Academy is a competitive program that prepares professionals in cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation for leadership roles in their field. Helen was selected from a nationwide pool of applicants and will join 50 participants and eight faculty members. The program provides strategies to strengthen patient care programs, share best practices and advance cardiopulmonary rehabilitation at a national level.
Her participation in the Academy will allow her to bring back new ideas and strategies to support patients and the broader community. “My leadership approach centers on advocacy, data-driven decision-making and team empowerment,” said Visco. “I believe strong programs are built on measurable outcomes, interdisciplinary collaboration and a culture where every team member understands they ‘why’ behind the work.”

Wellington Regional Medical Center Achieves 2026 Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award
March 10, 2026 – Wellington Regional Medical Center announced today that it has achieved the 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ from Healthgrades, the #1 site Americans use to find a doctor or hospital. This award reflects Wellington Regional Medical Center’s commitment to safe, patient-centered care and puts the organization in the top 10% of hospitals nationwide for patient safety the second year in a row (2025-2026).

Wellington Regional Medical Center’s achievement is based solely on what matters most: patient outcomes. To determine the national leaders in patient safety, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates from approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide across 13 patient safety indicators (PSIs), with each PSI representing a serious, preventable complication.
Healthgrades’ annual analysis revealed significant performance gaps between the nation’s highest-and lowest-achieving facilities, making it increasingly important for consumers to seek care at a hospital with top safety ratings. During the 2022-2024 study period, 167,228 preventable safety events occurred among Medicare patients at U.S. hospitals, with four PSIs accounting for nearly 78% of all incidents. Patients treated at Wellington Regional Medical Center and other award-winning facilities had a profoundly lower risk of experiencing these leading complications:
-In-hospital fall resulting in fracture (52.4% less likely)
-Collapsed lung due to a procedure in or around the chest (57.5% less likely)
-Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (67.8% less likely)
-Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (71.9% less likely)
“The data behind this year’s Patient Safety Excellence Award highlights how measurable improvements in safety can prevent thousands of complications,” said Dr. Alana Biggers, MPH, medical advisor at Healthgrades. “By prioritizing evidence-based safety practices, Wellington Regional Medical Center is achieving better clinical outcomes and cultivating a culture where patients come first.”

Tampa General Hospital Second Hospital in World Recognized for Excellence in Women’s Integrated Surgical Health
A new recognition for the academic health system’s gynecologic surgical oncology program contributed to its designation as a Center of Excellence in Women’s Integrated Surgical Health.
March 11, 2026 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) in partnership with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine has been designated a Center of Excellence in Gynecologic Surgical Oncology by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), making it the only hospital in the Southeast to receive this prestigious recognition in women’s health. The noteworthy recognition was achieved through the multidisciplinary teamwork of the TGH Cancer Institute and the TGH Women’s Institute.
“A national recognition for gynecologic oncology speaks to the strength of our multidisciplinary teams in cancer and women’s care and affirms our focus on providing advanced academically driven care to women throughout the Tampa Bay region and beyond,” said Dr. Thomas Rutherford, deputy director, TGH Cancer Institute and director of the Division of Gynecology and Oncology at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “We continue to lead the way in this space by innovating and delivering highly specialized care as well as advancing research within an academic medical center setting,” Rutherford said.
The Center of Excellence distinction builds on Tampa General’s expanding reputation for excellence in women’s surgical care. In 2025, the TGH Women’s Institute received designations as a Center of Excellence in Complex Endometriosis Care and Minimally Invasive Gynecology, as well as a Center of Excellence in Continence Care (Urogynecology), underscoring its advanced capabilities in treating complex gynecological disorders with evidence-based, minimally invasive techniques.
With all three accreditations now secured, Tampa General has been awarded the prestigious designation as a Center of Excellence in Women’s Integrated Surgical Health by SRC. This honor, as only the second hospital in the world with this designation, reflects the hospital’s commitment to delivering coordinated, multidisciplinary care by connecting patients with top specialists, advanced technologies and personalized treatment plans that emphasize safety, innovation and long-term health outcomes.

BROWARD HEALTHPOINT AND CITY OF LAUDERHILL HOST STAY HEALTHY TOGETHER COMMUNITY WELLNESS EVENT TO EXPAND HEALTHCARE ACCESS
March 11, 2026- Broward HealthPoint, in partnership with the City of Lauderhill, recently hosted a Stay Healthy Together community wellness event that brought together more than 600 community members for a day of health services, education and community support.
Stay Healthy Together is a comprehensive community health initiative designed to bring preventative and primary care services directly into Broward County neighborhoods, helping reduce barriers to care and improve health outcomes for local families.
“This is our third launch, Pompano, Lauderdale Lakes and now Lauderhill. We’re going to continue to go out into the community,” said Shane Strum, President and CEO of Broward Health. “We’re taking medicine and healthcare to everyone out there, we’re flipping the model.”
During the event, Broward HealthPoint’s adult and pediatric mobile health units were onsite to provide medical services and screenings. The adult mobile unit delivered 25 health services, including 15 primary care visits and 10 blood pressure and glucose screenings, while the pediatric mobile unit provided medical visits for children and families. In addition, 700 nutritious food bags were distributed, with 600 provided onsite and another 100 delivered throughout the community by volunteers. In addition, a total of 700 hot lunches were served to residents, volunteers and staff.
In addition to clinical services, more than 100 attendees participated in educational workshops focused on prevention and wellness. Sessions included CPR training, water safety, sun protection and skin cancer awareness, as well as a workshop on understanding diabetes and high blood pressure, which was led by Vanina Molinares, M.D. Attendees also learned practical steps for improving overall health in “Breathe. Reset. Thrive: Three Simple Steps Toward Better Health.”

International Collaboration: Australian Surgeons Travel to Delray Medical Center to Learn TCAR from Dr. Joseph Ricotta
March 10, 2026 – Nationally recognized Delray Medical Center vascular surgeon, Dr. Joseph Ricotta, recently trained a group of vascular surgeons from Australia who traveled to Palm Beach County to observe him perform Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) procedures.
TCAR is a minimally invasive technique for treating carotid artery disease, a condition where plaque buildup narrows the arteries supplying blood to the brain. This innovative procedure offers a safer, more efficient way to clear blockages and restore normal blood flow, significantly reducing the risk of stroke.
Boston Scientific, the manufacturer of TCAR, selected Dr. Ricotta for this unique educational experience because of his leadership and expertise in the field. He has completed nearly 500 TCAR procedures and in 2018, he completed the first TCAR procedure in South Florida.
The Australian surgeons who participated in the on-site observation included:
Dr. Damien Holdaway – Geelong Hospital, Victoria
Dr. Enis Kocak – Geelong Hospital, Victoria
Dr. Raj (Shikkranth) Rangarajan – Northern Hospital, Victoria
Dr. Chris Delaney – Flinders Medical Center, South Australia
Dr. Thavenesh Ramachandren – Flinders Medical Center, South Australia
Dr. Ed Travers – Flinders Medical Center, South Australia
These surgeons were preparing for the introduction of TCAR in Australia, where national clearance for performing the procedure is expected in 2027. Their visit to Delray Medical Center provided valuable insight into advanced TCAR techniques, workflow, and safety protocols under the guidance of one of the world’s foremost TCAR experts.
Dr. Ricotta’s expertise in the field has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious TCAR Clinical Operator of Excellence distinction from Silk Road Medical in 2020, an award recognizing top physicians for superior outcomes in TCAR procedures. Delray Medical Center also earned the TCAR Center of Excellence Award, also from Silk Road. (Silk Road was later acquired by Boston Scientific.) With over two decades of experience, Dr. Ricotta has also been repeatedly recognized as a National Top Doctor by Castle Connolly, and has contributed more than 300 peer-reviewed articles to medical literature. Newsweek recently ranked Dr. Ricotta as the top vascular surgeon in Florida and #2 in the entire country.

Palliative and Hospice Care Makes End-of-Life Transition Easier for Patients, Families
While bedside healthcare is geared toward helping patients, palliative and hospice professionals who care for people with life-limiting illness have a different focus than traditional providers. Their goal is no longer to heal or cure the patient, but to make the person’s remaining days as comfortable and pain-free as possible and to ease the transition to come.
“Generally speaking, one of the things that sets us apart is being comfortable with what most people find uncomfortable, including suffering and pain,” said VITAS Healthcare Associate Medical Director Angelica Torres Morales, MD, FACP, HMDC. “Most clinicians are trained to try to cure patients and are rarely comfortable with the natural process of death. While everyone goes into healthcare wanting to help people, hospice and palliative medical professionals try to help in a different, more comprehensive and compassionate way.”
Dr. Torres Morales, who first trained in internal medicine, was drawn to helping patients and families during one of the most difficult times in their lives. “I originally planned on a career in genetic research and didn’t expect to have contact with patients at all until I realized that what I enjoyed most was being at bedside, hearing their stories and doing my best to help them,” she said.
“In my second year of residency, I treated a patient who had spent a prolonged time in the hospital,” she added. “She told me, ‘Whatever you do in the future, do it so that your patients don’t suffer as much as I suffered.’ That helped fuel me to become a patient advocate.”
Palliative care is focused on relieving symptoms, pain and stress for people living with serious illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease or dementia. It can be provided alongside curative or disease-modifying treatment, such as chemotherapy, to help with symptom management and treatment side effects. Palliative care professionals also assist families in navigating complex medical decisions.

26th Annual SanCap Cares Island Celebration Strengthens Island-Based Healthcare and Pediatric Services
Mar. 11, 2026 – The 26th Annual SanCap Cares Island Celebration held on March 4 brought the community together for an evening of generosity and shared purpose, raising more than $350,000 to strengthen island-based healthcare services and continue advancing pediatric care across Southwest Florida.
Hosted in an elegant island setting at Cielo Restaurant, this year’s celebration united philanthropic leaders from Sanibel and Captiva in support of comprehensive family medicine services at Lee Health Sanibel Primary/Walk-In Care. The evening featured a mission-driven program along with fine dining and fellowship that reflected the islands’ deep-rooted culture of generosity.

Florida Coast Medical Center Performs First Electrophysiology Ablation Using Advanced CARTO® with NGEN Technology
March 11, 2026 – Florida Coast Medical Center is announcing the successful completion of its first electrophysiology (EP) ablation procedure, marking a major milestone in the hospital’s expanding cardiovascular program. The procedure was performed utilizing advanced CARTO® mapping technology with NGEN integration to treat cardiac arrhythmia.
Electrophysiology ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat irregular heart rhythms, including atrial fibrillation (AFib) and other complex arrhythmias. By precisely mapping the heart’s electrical signals and targeting abnormal tissue, physicians can restore normal rhythm, reduce symptoms, and lower the risk of long-term complications such as stroke and heart failure.
The procedure was performed using CARTO®, a 3D cardiac mapping system, combined with NGEN technology to enhance precision and procedural efficiency. The technology allows physicians to create detailed, real-time maps of the heart’s electrical activity, helping to guide catheter placement and ablation with greater accuracy.
