NOVEL GENE THERAPY SHOWS POSITIVE INITIAL RESULTS IN SICKLE CELL PATIENTS TREATED IN CLINICAL TRIAL AT CLEVELAND CLINIC CHILDREN’S

JUNE 9 ,2023 – Researchers presenting preliminary data from a clinical trial aimed at discovering a cure for sickle cell disease reveal positive results among its first patients.

Sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder, is a painful and debilitating condition for which there are few approved therapies.

Researchers involved in the multicenter RUBY Trial presented an update on the safety and effectiveness of a single dose of EDIT-301, an experimental one-time gene editing cell therapy that modifies a patient’s own blood-forming stem cells to correct the mutation responsible for sickle cell disease. Results were presented at the European Hematology Association Hybrid Congress in Frankfurt, Germany.

The first four patients, two of whom are participating in the RUBY trial at Cleveland Clinic Children’s, had their stem cells collected for gene editing. The patients then underwent chemotherapy treatment to destroy their remaining bone marrow, making room for the repaired cells that were later infused back into their body.

EXCEPTIONAL CARE, EXCEPTIONAL OUTCOME – BROWARD HEALTH

JUNE 7, 2023 – When Pat Johnsen retired in November 2021, she looked forward to settling into the next stage in her life and continuing to enjoy her active lifestyle. Unfortunately, arthritis was settling into her hips causing excruciating pain. Even walking was a struggle.

By the early summer of 2022, Johnsen decided she had had enough. After interviewing three doctors, she chose orthopaedic surgeon Adam J. Lipman, M.D.

“By the time she sought treatment, Pat’s arthritis had reached stage 4, and she was experiencing chronic pain and loss of mobility,” Dr. Lipman said.

“Walking is something that you take for granted,” Johnsen said. “But arthritis eventually changed my whole gait and created this side-to-side motion. Eventually, I couldn’t go grocery shopping or even walk downstairs. I had always been an active person, and then I was pretty much incapacitated.”

Dr. Lipman performed Johnsen’s first total hip replacement in June and the second in August. Both were performed at Broward Health North using the direct anterior approach.

She stayed in the hospital one night after her first surgery but was up and walking the same day. The next morning, she participated in a physical therapy class with some other patients before she was discharged. After her second surgery, she was doing so well they sent her home the same day.

TGH IMAGING IMPLEMENTS PHILIPS RADIOLOGY OPERATIONS COMMAND CENTER (ROCC)

Virtualized imaging solution allows for more consistent workflows and faster, better-quality diagnostic imaging.

June 7, 2023 – TGH Imaging has implemented the Philips Radiology Operations Command Center (ROCC) at several of its outpatient locations offering magnetic resonance imaging testing. ROCC is a virtualized imaging solution that seamlessly connects TGH Imaging experts and technologists remotely from a centralized command center. This innovative technology and workflow facilitates communication between scanner-facing technologists and experts to provide real-time collaboration, support and training on complex imaging procedures and protocols.

“When researching the ROCC concept, we envisioned this solution within our TGH Imaging network as providing invaluable advanced imaging protocol support and expanding patient access across multiple sites,” said Sherri Lewman, senior vice president of Enterprise Imaging at Tampa General Hospital. “With the ROCC, innovation takes the lead in revolutionizing our daily radiology operations, enhancing our imaging capabilities, and providing staffing flexibility, enabling us to ultimately serve more patients more efficiently, overall delivering better patient care.”

The ROCC platform offers the ability to perform a radiology procedure remotely and provide real-time technologist assistance and collaboration on difficult exams, all from a centralized TGH Imaging command center. For example, an imaging technologist at the command center can implement the patient’s scan regardless of where the exam is being performed. Teams on-site assist the patient with their appointment so that the process is completely seamless.

June 7, 2023 – The Health Care District of Palm Beach County’s 120-bed skilled nursing home, the Edward J. Healey Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Riviera Beach, Florida, has been recognized as a 2023 Bronze National Quality Award recipient by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL). The distinction is the first of three progressive award levels through the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program, which honors providers across the nation that have demonstrated their commitment to improving quality of care for our nation’s elders and individuals with disabilities.

“It’s an honor to receive the Bronze National Quality Award for 2023,” said Darcy J. BREAKTHROUGH STUDY: HEMOPHILIA CURE ACHIEVED WITHIN MONTHS

June 5, 2023 – A groundbreaking trial which included Sheba researchers revealed that hemophilia patients, who suffer from a chronic genetic disease, can be cured in just a few months, by successfully replacing the defective gene.
Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder which is usually inherited. It results from a genetic mutation or alteration in one of the genes that provide instructions for producing clotting factor proteins essential for forming blood clots. Individuals with hemophilia suffer from spontaneous bleeding as well as excessive bleeding following injury or surgery.

The severity of hemophilia is determined by the amount of clotting factor present, with lower levels resulting in a higher likelihood of bleeding and potentially serious health complications. Individuals with a severe form of hemophilia are at high risk of experiencing internal bleeding, particularly in their knees, ankles, and elbows, which can cause damage to organs and tissues and pose a life-threatening risk.

Hemophilia can be treated with preventative or on-demand approaches. Most cases of hemophilia are severe and require preventative treatment, which involves regular clotting factor injections to prevent bleeding and joint/muscle damage. Patients receiving preventative treatment require ongoing monitoring and usually continue treatment for life. On-demand treatment is used to treat prolonged bleeding as needed.

FLORIDA MEDICAID MEMBERS URGED TO UPDATE PERSONAL INFORMATION NOW THAT MEDICAID CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT HAS ENDED

June 8, 2023 – Medicaid enrollees in Florida are urged to make sure their Medicaid health plan’s Member Services team and the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) have accurate, up-to-date contact information for them and their family members, and to complete any necessary re-enrollment activities as soon as they are due.

Now that continuous Medicaid enrollment has expired, DCF has resumed its regular process for determining Medicaid enrollees’ eligibility and will begin to disenroll individuals who are no longer eligible for Medicaid. DCF will need current contact information to reach Florida’s Medicaid enrollees, including those who enrolled prior to the continuous Medicaid enrollment, to evaluate their current financial status and other qualifying criteria. Those who cannot be reached may lose their Medicaid coverage.

ACO Quality Changes Stall Drive to the Future

June 8, 2023- Highlights:

Accountable care organizations (ACOs) will be required to report quality via electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs) or Merit Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) CQMs by 2025.

ACOs ultimately want to achieve a more seamless, efficient, and technology-enabled quality reporting system that is highly interoperable and relies on near real-time data to enable improved patient care. However, lacking interoperability today, ACOs will face many challenges and increased administrative burden and costs to try and support this work in the near term.

NAACOS is calling on CMS to pilot-test digital measurement instead of eCQMs/MIPS CQMs to create a path forward that will accelerate the success of all ACOs.

CMS ANNOUNCES MULTI-STATE INITIATIVE TO STRENGTHEN PRIMARY CARE

New Model Aims to Enhance Access and Quality of Primary Care, Improve Health System

On June 8, 2023 the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a new primary care model – the Making Care Primary (MCP) Model – that will be tested under the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation in eight states. Access to high-quality primary care is associated with better health outcomes and equity for people and communities. MCP is an important step in strengthening the primary care infrastructure in the country, especially for safety net and smaller or independent primary care organizations. The model seeks to improve care for patients by expanding and enhancing care management and care coordination, equipping primary care clinicians with tools to form partnerships with health care specialists, and leveraging community-based connections to address patients’ health needs as well as their health-related social needs.

The goals of MCP are to 1) ensure patients receive primary care that is integrated, coordinated, person-centered and accountable; 2) create a pathway for primary care organizations and practices – especially small, independent, rural, and safety net organizations – to enter into value-based care arrangements; and 3) to improve the quality of care and health outcomes of patients while reducing program expenditures.

KENTUCKY OTOLARYNGOLOGIST CHOSEN AS AMA PRESIDENT-ELECT

June 8 2023 – Bruce A. Scott, M.D., an otolaryngologist from Kentucky, was voted president-elect of the American Medical Association (AMA) by physicians gathered at the Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates. Following a year-long term as president-elect, Dr. Scott will be installed as AMA president in June 2024.

“Winning the faith and support of my peers to represent the nation’s physicians and patients we serve is a great honor and tremendous responsibility,” said Dr. Scott. “Physicians faced incredible challenges throughout the COVID-19 pandemic – personal challenges to their own health, as well as financial headwinds and inflation that closed many, and imperiled other, physician practices. With physician burnout surging, prior authorizations taking more and more time and resources away from patient care, and an unsustainable Medicare system, I will advocate relentlessly during my presidency for the AMA Recovery Plan for America’s Physicians.”

Dr. Scott has been a leader in medicine throughout his career and a member of the AMA House of Delegates (HOD) for over 25 years. First elected speaker of the AMA HOD in 2019, he previously served as vice speaker and joined the AMA Board of Trustees in 2015.

AMA PRESIDENT ASSESSES NATION’S HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

Speech reflects on AMA leadership in rebuilding broken health care system

June 9 2023 – American Medical Association (AMA) President Jack Resneck Jr., M.D., today delivered the final speech of his presidency to the AMA House of Delegates, offering his assessment of our health care system. In his remarks, Dr. Resneck touted significant gains made under the AMA Recovery Plan for America’s Physicians and enumerated outstanding challenges, both to the patient-physician relationship and to achieving optimal health for all.

Dr. Resneck, a dermatologist from San Francisco, highlighted mounting prior authorization hurdles, an unsustainable Medicare payment system, and burnout threats that jeopardize the physician workforce and patient access to care. He shined a light on threats to reproductive health care, the ongoing toll of firearm violence, and a climate of anti-science aggression. But he also touted significant gains, including extending Medicare telehealth coverage, the introduction of bipartisan legislation to align the Medicare fee schedule with MEI, and both state and federal progress in constraining prior authorization.
