Experienced healthcare executive brings nearly two decades of leadership across complex hospital operations and strategic growth

October 1, 2026 – Memorial Healthcare System has named Madison Workman, FACHE, chief executive officer of Memorial Hospital Pembroke, where he will oversee hospital operations and continued growth centered on patient care. Workman has a proven track record of building high-performing teams, elevating patient experience and driving clinical growth and organizational performance.

Broward Health Reaches 100 Cases Using Terumo ROADSAVER™ Carotid Stent System for Stroke Prevention

OCTOBER 2, 2026- FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.– Broward Health has reached a major milestone in the treatment of carotid artery disease, completing over 100 procedures using the Terumo ROADSAVER™ Carotid Stent System across Broward Health Medical Center and Broward Health North.

The system uses a small mesh tube to open a narrow carotid artery and improve blood flow to the brain. Its unique design traps plaque against the artery wall during the procedure and helps prevent plaque and debris from breaking loose and traveling to the brain, where it could cause a stroke.

Mehdi Bouslama, M.D., medical director of cerebrovascular care at Broward Health, performed Florida’s first procedure using the advanced stent system at Broward Health Medical Center in January. Since that first procedure, Broward Health has expanded the use of the technology to Broward Health North, and the health system has now reached 100 procedures using the ROADSAVER™ system across both hospitals. The milestone reflects the rapid growth of the program and expands access to this advanced level of care to even more patients across the community.

Sarasota Memorial Offers New Leadless Pacemaker Therapy for Select Heart Failure Patients

Oct. 1, 2026 – Sarasota Memorial Hospital is the first hospital in the Tampa Bay region offering a new leadless pacing option for certain heart failure patients who are unable to benefit from traditional cardiac resynchronization therapy.

On Wednesday, Sarasota Memorial electrophysiologists Brian Betensky, MD, and Robert Eckart, DO, successfully implanted EBR System’s WiSE left ventricular endocardial pacing system in two patients at SMH-Sarasota. The novel, FDA-approved leadless pacing system is implanted inside the heart’s left ventricle as part of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), which helps the heart’s ventricles beat in sync and pump more effectively.

Unlike traditional CRT systems that rely on a lead placed in the coronary vein outside the left ventricle, the WiSE system uses a battery and ultrasound transmitter inserted beneath the skin of the chest, along with a tiny electrode—about the size of a grain of rice—implanted inside the left ventricle. The electrode converts ultrasound energy into electrical stimulation, coordinating left ventricular pacing with pacing delivered by the patient’s companion device, to help the heart beat in a more coordinated and efficient way.

OnMed, Jackson Health System and The Salvation Army Deploy OnMed CareStation™ to Extend Care Beyond Hospital Walls in Miami

Health system-sponsored CareStation creates a new front door to comprehensive, everyday care while strengthening connections to Jackson’s broader network of services

SEPTEMBER 30, 2026 – OnMed, the leader in hybrid healthcare expanding access to care through the CareStation, today announced a new partnership with Jackson Health System, Miami’s only public health system, and The Salvation Army to bring essential medical care closer to home in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood. Sponsored by Jackson, the CareStation will be deployed at The Salvation Army’s Miami location at 1907 NW 38th St., providing residents with convenient access to licensed clinicians in a private, technology-enabled care environment.

As workforce shortages and rising emergency room utilization strain traditional models of care, health systems across the United States are increasingly looking beyond brick and mortar options to provide comprehensive care directly in the communities they serve.

American Cancer Society and Baptist Health Announce Partnership to Expand Cancer Screening Efforts

September 30, 2026 — The American Cancer Society (ACS) is expanding its efforts to improve access to cancer screening and early detection in Southeast Florida through an exclusive partnership with Baptist Health. This effort focuses on breaking down barriers to screening, raising awareness about prevention, and helping more people access recommended cancer screening tests.

“This collaboration allows ACS to expand availability of lifesaving screening and education across Southeast Florida,” said Joan Gonzalez, vice president, Development, American Cancer Society. “Together with Baptist Health, we can reach more people with the information, guidance and tools they need to help prevent cancer or detect it early, when treatment is likely to be more effective.”

Through this initiative, Baptist Health plays an important role in the American Cancer Society’s efforts to promote cancer screening and connect individuals with lifesaving resources. As part of the “I Love You Get Screened™” campaign, community members can access education, tools and opportunities to engage with ACS programs and learn about cancer screening, patient resources and local care options.

Mayo Clinic researchers report early results from therapy designed for a single patient with rare genetic form of ALS

OCTOBER 1, 2026 — Mayo Clinic researchers report encouraging early results from an experimental therapy targeting the genetic cause of a rare form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. The study is published in Med.

The single-patient study points to a broader possibility in precision medicine — using the genetic cause of a disease as a framework for testing highly targeted therapies, particularly for patients with rare conditions that have few treatment options.

“I didn’t think I would see this kind of research in my lifetime — identifying a disease-causing mutation, developing an experimental therapy and delivering it to a patient,” says Björn Oskarsson, M.D., a Mayo Clinic neurologist and senior author of the study. “It speaks to the power of science and how far genetically targeted treatments have come.”

How Multidisciplinary Care Helped Treat a Silent Aortic Aneurysm

After years of monitoring a symptom-free aortic aneurysm, coordinated specialists at UHealth determined that Ellis Álvaro Senior needed surgery before reaching the traditional treatment threshold. The planned procedure allowed the team to preserve his native aortic valve.

October 2, 2026 –Ellis Álvaro, Sr., felt no pain and had no symptoms when, in 2019, a routine medical test revealed an aneurysm in the ascending aorta. The diagnosis marked the beginning of years of medical follow-up and, ultimately, a life-saving intervention.

“I didn’t feel anything,” Álvaro recalled. “It was during a routine coronary calcium scan my doctor ordered that they discovered the aneurysm. At the time it was small, but they knew it could grow.”

Over the following years, the aneurysm was monitored through periodic imaging studies. Although the growth was slow, evaluations showed steady progression. In May 2025, tests revealed a turning point. The aorta had reached 5.3 centimeters in diameter.

That finding changed the course of treatment.

Delray Medical Center Introduces Innovative Tissue-Sparing Shoulder Replacement Technique Designed for Earlier Motion after Surgery

Dr. Vani Sabesan is the only surgeon south of Orlando offering the INHANCE INTACT™ subscapularis-sparing approach to shoulder replacement

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - October 2, 2026– Delray Medical Center is proud to offer patients an advanced approach to total shoulder replacement with the INHANCE INTACT™ Tissue Sparing Surgical Technique, performed by orthopedic shoulder and elbow surgeon Dr. Vani Sabesan. Dr. Sabesan is the only surgeon south of Orlando performing this innovative procedure, providing patients across South Florida with access to one of the latest advancements in shoulder replacement surgery close to home.

Traditional anatomic shoulder replacement commonly requires releasing and later repairing the subscapularis tendon, an important component of the rotator cuff, to access the shoulder joint. The INHANCE INTACT™ technique is designed to preserve the subscapularis tendon, minimizing disruption of the shoulder’s native soft tissues during surgery.  Because the tendon does not need to be released and repaired, appropriately selected patients may be able to begin moving their shoulder as early as the first day after surgery, without some of the restrictions traditionally required to protect a healing subscapularis repair.

After Her First Mammogram Revealed Advanced Breast Cancer, This Young Mom Refused to Let a Diagnosis Define Her

At Broward Health, a routine screening led to an unexpected stage 3B diagnosis—and a treatment journey that helped this mother of four take back control of her life.

October 1, 2026 – When Amanda Marchant turned 40 years old in 2025, she did what millions of women do every year, she scheduled her first mammogram, treating it like any other routine wellness visit.

With no family history, lump, pain or symptoms, the North Lauderdale resident assumed the callback for an ultrasound was simply due to dense breast tissue, a common and usually benign occurrence seen in 40% to 50% of women.

Florida Pediatricians Continue to Speak Out Against Efforts to Weaken Vaccine Protections and Endanger Florida’s Children

SEPTEBER 30, 2026 – Tallahassee, Florida – With today’s notice from the Florida Department of Health scheduling a hearing on its proposed revisions to Rule 64D-3.046, Florida Administrative Code, the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FCAAP) remains concerned about efforts to weaken Florida’s school vaccination policies and make   it easier to opt out of childhood immunizations.

Florida’s pediatricians will continue to make their voices heard in opposition to this proposed rule that would undermine the health of Florida’s children and communities. When school vaccine protections are eliminated, immunization rates decrease, leaving more people, including those too young or medically unable to be vaccinated themselves, vulnerable to contracting these dangerous illnesses. The vaccines against Hepatitis B, Varicella (chickenpox), Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib), and Pneumococcal disease are paramount for the protection of Florida’s children, immunocompromised persons, and the elderly from infections of the brain, lungs, eyes, and hearts.

Palm Beach Health Network Encourages Women 40+ to Make Breast Health Part of Their Routine

Scheduling Diagnostic Exams Now Easier Than Ever

WEST PALM BEACH, Fl. — October 1, 2026 — October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Palm Beach Health Network is encouraging women age 40 and older to take a simple step for their health: get a screening mammogram or talk with their healthcare provider about their personal breast cancer risk and what screening is right for them and when. For those women who have specific concerns, such as experiencing pain or other breast changes, Palm Beach Health Networkhas made it easier than ever to schedule a diagnostic exam to determine if they have breast cancer.

“Too often women put off regular screening because they are focused on their families or because screening has become confusing.  While they take care of others, it’s important this October that women save some time for their own health care,” said Sherry Lemon, manager of the Norma E. & Mies M. Zisson Comprehensive Breast Center of the Palm Beaches at Good Samaritan Medical Center, part of Palm Beach Health Network.

The AMA to FAA: Don’t Wing It on In-Flight Medical Kits

The American Medical Association (AMA) is urging the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to reverse course on its proposed changes to the requirements for commercial airline emergency medical kits, warning that allowing individual airlines to determine their own medical supplies could compromise passenger safety during in-flight emergencies.

In a comment letter to FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford, the AMA expressed strong support for updating the two-decade-old onboard medical kit requirements. The AMA, however, opposes the FAA’s proposal to eliminate federal minimum standards entirely. If enacted, the rule would grant individual airlines broad discretion over what diagnostic tools and medications to carry.

An Evening of Hope Celebrating 25 Years of Compassion and Saving Lives

For 25 years, A Safe Haven for Newborns has stood as a beacon of hope for mothers in crisis and a lifeline for vulnerable newborns. What began as Nick’s deeply personal journey to heal a broken heart and honor the memory of his beloved wife, Gloria, following her tragic passing, has grown into an internationally recognized organization dedicated to preventing infant abandonment and providing support, counseling, and critical resources to women facing the overwhelming reality of an unplanned pregnancy. From its beginnings, the mission has been rooted in compassion, dignity, and love — offering hope, protection, and a path forward during life’s most difficult moments.

Over the past quarter century, countless lives have been touched through the organization’s unwavering commitment to offering safe, legal, and anonymous options for mothers seeking help. Through advocacy, education, community partnerships, and around-the-clock support, A Safe Haven for Newborns has continued to remind women that they are never alone. To date, 441 newborns have been given a chance at life — 431 in Florida; nine in other states, and one in Honduras.

This milestone anniversary is more than a celebration of years — it is a celebration of lives, second chances, and the power of compassion to change the future. We invite you to join us in celebrating our Silver Jubilee by visiting our website and selecting a sponsorship opportunity. Or, contact Nick Silverio at safehaven@asafehavenfornewborns.com; 305-882-1304 x103 for more information.
