HANLEY FOUNDATION LAUNCHES NEW SAFE PRESCRIBING INITIATIVE
August 22, 2023— International Overdose Awareness Day is on August 31st, and to increase awareness of this critical topic, Hanley Foundation has launched an innovative Safe Prescribing Initiative, designed to inform parents, patients and healthcare providers on the risks associated with the prescription of opioids to the pediatric population. As a part of the initiative, the Foundation created multiple evidence-based resources, available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Creole.
One of the resources is a Safe Prescribing Toolkit—with audience-tailored content created for parents, patients, and providers. The toolkit provides essential information by highlighting the short-term and long-term dangers of prescription opioids, especially to adolescents. The Initiative’s materials illustrate the risk and protective factors scientifically correlated with adolescents’ misuse of opioids, and research-proven alternatives, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy for pain management and patient rehabilitation. The toolkit and other resources are available at HanleyFoundation.org/SPI.

TGH’S LIMB PRESERVATION PROGRAM TAKES PATIENT-FIRST APPROACH TO PROVIDE WORLD-CLASS CARE
August 21, 2023 – The Heart & Vascular Institute’s (HVI) Limb Preservation and Complex Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Program at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) is the first and only of its kind in the Tampa Bay region to offer an integrated, multidisciplinary and evidence-based approach to the management and care of patients with complex PAD.
Living with vascular disease can be stressful and challenging, which is why our goal at TGH is to make a patient’s care journey as efficient, cost-effective and high-quality as possible. In March 2023, the TGH Vascular Center of Excellence, Medical Director of the TGH Limb Preservation Program and an Assistant Professor with USF Health, was interviewed by WFLA’s Daytime recently to discuss the new South Tampa clinic and its limb preservation services. Among the leading experts in the treatment of PAD and end-stage Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia (CLTI), Dr. Bailey and his team have treated patients from a variety of communities. This includes individuals with health care challenges and disparities who often face barriers to accessing quality care that can provide them with the best chance of limb salvage.

FAU LANDS $4.2 MILLION NIH GRANT FOR AIR QUALITY AND ALZHEIMER’S RISKS STUDY
Research Project Will Focus on Farmworkers and Rural Residents Along Florida’s Lake Okeechobee
August 23, 2023 – Worldwide, the practice of preparing agricultural fields by burning crop residue contributes large quantities of gaseous pollutants and aerosol particles to the atmosphere and is a known cardiorespiratory health hazard. It has been shown that combustion byproducts in smoke cross the blood-brain barrier causing brain inflammation, and repeated inhalation of smoke can contribute to cognitive decline and dementia among older adults.
Federal efforts to monitor air quality have been focused on population-dense urban communities. As such, impacts of smoke exposure from agricultural fires on the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) in rural populations are not well understood.
People who live in the rural communities along Lake Okeechobee are subjected to repeated, intermittent exposures to air pollution during agricultural fires. Not only is the risk of ADRD among aging residents of these communities from repeated air pollution a concern, but smoke exposure also is associated with an anxious, irritable and depressed mood, which could lead to social isolation and thereby impact mental health in general.

‘CLIPS FOR CANCER’ EVENTS THROUGHOUT SEPTEMBER TO RAISE MONEY FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER
August 23, 2023 – The 6th Annual Clips for Cancer, presented by Florida Radiology Consultants, kicks off Sept. 1. The month-long event raises funds necessary to ensure that programs and services are available for local children diagnosed with cancer at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.
Throughout September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the community comes together with a goal of raising $350,000 to benefit Barbara’s Friends – Golisano Children’s Hospital’s cancer fund.
“Last year, the annual event was cut short due to Hurricane Ian, and a portion of the funds raised were used to help families impacted by the devastating hurricane,” said Amy Frith, senior director of Barbara’s Friends. “Since the storm, more than 50 children have been diagnosed with cancer and need the community’s support. Generous donors ensure that no child is denied lifesaving care or turned away because of their family’s inability to cover the cost of treatment.”

CMS ISSUES DRAFT GUIDANCE ON NEW PROGRAM TO ALLOW PEOPLE WITH MEDICARE TO PAY OUT-OF-POCKET PRESCRIPTION DRUG COSTS IN MONTHLY PAYMENTS
New Medicare Prescription Payment Plan will help people pay Medicare Part D costs over the year instead of all at once
August 21, 2023 – President Biden’s prescription drug law, the Inflation Reduction Act, gives people with Medicare prescription drug coverage (Medicare Part D) the option to pay out-of-pocket costs in monthly payments spread out over the year, starting in 2025. Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released draft guidance for comment that outlines the requirements and procedures for certain aspects of the new Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. By enabling seniors and people with disabilities with Medicare Part D coverage to spread out cost sharing over the year, the program could reduce the burden of high upfront out-of-pocket prescription drug costs.
“For people with Medicare Part D who face high costs early in the year, today’s announcement will ease the burden of out-of-pocket prescription drug costs,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “This is one more example of how the President’s prescription drug bill is reducing costs and increasing access to life-saving medicines for our Medicare beneficiaries.”

AMA URGES HIGH COURT TO KEEP FIREARMS AWAY FROM DOMESTIC ABUSERS
August 23, 2023 – The American Medical Association (AMA) and four other health professional organizations filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court asserting that upholding firearm prohibitions on domestic violence abusers who are the subject of restraining orders is a necessary and constitutional protection that saves the lives of family members and others.
The case of United States v. Rahimi does not focus on law-abiding firearm owners but applies to a dangerous subset of non-law abiding and highly irresponsible citizens who are subject to a domestic violence restraining order (DVRO) based on a judicial finding after notice and an opportunity to be heard.
The AMA-led brief contends that a law prohibiting domestic violence abusers from possessing firearms is constitutionally permissible and must be upheld. The brief shares physicians’ strong conviction, informed by their health care work and research, that barring domestic violence abusers from access to firearms when the requirements of law are satisfied is critical to save lives.
