| Cleveland Clinic Researchers Discover New Bacterium that Causes Gut Immunodeficiency
Findings lay the groundwork for potential new treatments for variety of inflammatory and infectious diseases including inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis
SEPTEMBER 26, 2024 – Cleveland Clinic researchers have discovered a new bacterium that weakens the immune system in the gut, potentially contributing to certain inflammatory and infectious gut diseases.
The team identified the bacterium, Tomasiella immunophila (T. immunophila), which plays a key role in breaking down a crucial immune component of the gut’s multi-faceted protective immune barrier.
Identifying this bacterium is the first step to developing new treatments for a variety of inflammatory and infectious gut diseases. These conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, are associated with decreased levels of secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA), an antibody that protects mucosal surfaces.
The study, published in Science, was led by Thaddeus Stappenbeck, M.D., Ph.D., chair of Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Inflammation and Immunity, and Qiuhe Lu, Ph.D., research associate and the paper’s first author.

Baptist Health Treats First Liver Cancer Patients with Histotripsy
The non-invasive treatment offers hope for patients who cannot undergo surgery or have failed other treatments
September 25, 2024 – Baptist Health is among the first few centers in the nation to offer a new non-invasive procedure to treat liver cancer called histotripsy. The technology uses ultrasound energy to destroy cancer tissue.
Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health, was one of 8 hospitals involved in the initial clinical trials that led to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of the procedure and is the only hospital in South Florida to offer the treatment.
“Since FDA approval, we’ve now treated three patients whose cancers metastasized to the liver,” says Govindarajan Narayanan, M.D., chief of interventional oncology at Miami Cancer Institute and a vascular interventional radiologist with Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute. Histotripsy involves a multidisciplinary team from both Institutes.
“We are happy to say that none of our patients experienced any pain immediately after the procedure and they are all doing very well,” he adds.
The American Cancer Society estimates that about 41,630 new cases of primary liver cancer will have been diagnosed in the U.S. in 2024. Thousands more people develop tumors in the liver when cancer that originated in other parts of the body (most commonly colorectal, pancreas and breast) metastasize to the liver. The liver is the second-most common site of metastatic disease. READ MORE |
26-Year-Old Breast Cancer Survivor is Addressing Breast Cancer Disparities in Adolescents and Young Adults

26-Year-Old Ph.D. Candidate Diagnosed With Rare Form of Breast Cancer – Two Separate Tumors in Different Breast Quadrants Her Research Now Focuses on Addressing Breast Cancer Disparities in Adolescents, Young Adults and Marginalized, Minority Communities
September 25, 2024 – LaShae Rolle, a then-26-year-old native of the Bahamas, was working toward a Ph.D. in Community Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine when she discovered a lump in her breast. Given her youthfulness and the fact that there was no family history of breast cancer nor any other risk factors, she wasn’t particularly concerned. But to be safe, she went to the student center for a referral to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System.
To her surprise, the mammogram and a follow-up ultrasound led to a diagnosis of multicentric breast cancer, a rare type of breast cancer that occurs when two or more tumors form separately in different quadrants of the breast, separated by normal breast tissue.
“I have a background in epidemiology,” says Rolle, whose area of study is cancer disparities in marginalized, minority communities. After being diagnosed, she learned that adolescents and young adults (AYAs) are an underserved group. Less than 1% of females under age 30 are ever diagnosed with breast cancer, she says. “But that is around 84,000 in the U.S. annually.” From now on, says Rolle, AYAs will be included in all her research and community efforts.

Falls in Older Adults Can be Reduced by Taking Simple Steps
September is National Falls Prevention Awareness Month
PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL. – September 26th, 2024 – One in four Americans aged 65+ falls each year, according to the National Council on Aging. Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall. Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital and nursing home admissions among older adults. In fact, more than 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture.
Although falls are prevalent in older adults, there could be many ways to help your loved one continue to live safely and independently in their own home.
Falls and accidents seldom “just happen.” “Usually there are several contributing factors that lead to a fall,” says Dr. Richard Shih, an emergency medicine physician on staff at Delray Medical Center. He and several other Florida Atlantic University Schmidt College of Medicine researchers have also done extensive research on falls prevention in conjunction with Delray Medical Center. “The danger in some of these factors can be eliminated or reduced by taking simple steps to make an elder’s home safer.”

Tampa General Hospital Stands Ready to Treat and Support Patients in the Communities Hardest Hit by Hurricane Helene
One of the nation’s leading academic health systems, Tampa General is the region’s only Level I Trauma Center.
Tampa, FL – September 27, 2024 – Hurricane Helene brought heavy rains, strong winds and storm surge to the Tampa Bay region, resulting in flooding in low-lying areas. However, the patients, physicians and team members at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) remain safe, with power on, are providing ongoing patient care and have plenty of supplies to support continued operations.
“The state depends on Tampa General to deliver world-class care, and we are committed to deliver on that expectation while keeping our patients, physicians and team members safe from harm,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital. “That’s why we have strengthened our infrastructure to withstand severe weather, prepared and practiced emergency management, and brought in additional supplies to support our teams and patients through severe weather conditions. I am grateful to all the physicians and team members who remained on-site through the hurricane, and for the exceptional care they continued to provide here while their families sheltered safely at home or away. Because of these efforts, patients at Tampa General are safe, and we are preparing to care for Floridians in the hardest-hit communities.”

Pasadena Hospital installs flood control system to prepare for Hurricane Helene
In addition to the patient transfers, the hospital has implemented a Tiger Dam Flooding Control System around the facility to protect it from potential flooding caused by the storm
SEPTEMBER 25, 2024 – Tampa, FL — In response to the anticipated arrival of Hurricane Helene, HCA Florida Pasadena Hospital has transferred patients to nearby hospitals within the HCA Florida Healthcare network. This decision was made to ensure the safety and well-being of all patients as the storm approaches the Tampa Bay area.
The patient evacuation process was completed swiftly and efficiently, with all patients transferred to alternative facilities equipped to continue their care. This precautionary measure aligns with HCA Florida Pasadena Hospital’s commitment to the highest standards of patient safety, particularly in times of severe weather.
In addition to the patient transfers, the hospital has implemented a Tiger Dam Flooding Control System around the facility to protect it from potential flooding caused by the storm. The Tiger Dam system, provided by US Flood Control, is an innovative and effective flood barrier solution designed to take any shape and protect against rising water levels. The system uses water-filled tubes that can be deployed rapidly to create a temporary flood barrier, ensuring the hospital is safeguarded from the threat of flooding.

During National Diaper Needs Awareness Week, $15.9 Million in Support for the Diaper Distribution Pilot Announced
September 27, 2024 – Today, HHS’ Administration for Children and Families’ (ACF), through its Office of Community Services, announced the fourth cohort of grant recipients of the Diaper Distribution Demonstration and Research Pilot, also known as the Diaper Distribution Pilot. This fourth funding release comes during National Diaper Need Awareness Week and will support a new cohort of seven grant recipients with a total of $8.4 million in awards that will expand diaper distribution and additional wraparound support services for caregivers in six states and one tribe. This funding will also provide $7.5 million in supplemental awards to 13 grant recipients from the first two cohorts of the Diaper Distribution Pilot. Today’s funding of $15.9 million brings the total funding allocated for the Diaper Distribution Pilot to $40.2 million since September of 2022. Diaper Distribution Pilot projects will now serve 24 states and 4 tribal communities.
“When families can’t afford diapers, it affects everything from a child’s physical health to caregiver’s emotional wellbeing,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “By providing funding for diaper needs, we are strengthening the overall health and economic security of the entire family. This is just the latest action we are taking as part of the White House Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis, our whole-of-government strategy to improve maternal care.”
The seven new grants will serve families in Indiana, Georgia, The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Colorado, Florida, Wisconsin and Oklahoma. Grant recipients will work with community partners to strengthen and expand their existing diaper distribution infrastructure and provide wraparound support services to assist families experiencing diaper need. These support services can include job training, educational support, housing services and food and nutrition services.

HHS Adopts New Rules for Federal Financial Assistance (2 CFR Part 200) and Publishes Updated Grants Policy Statement (GPS) to Make Grants More Accessible and Transparent
SEPTEMBER 27, 2024 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Office of Grants in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Financial Resources, announced the pre-publication of an Interim Final Rule (IFR) that implements the 2024 Revisions to the Uniform Administrative Requirements for Federal Financial Assistance (Uniform Guidance) at 2 CFR part 200 (89 FR 30046 – PDF). According to the GAO, HHS is the largest grant-making agency in the Federal government. Scientists discover gene responsible for rare, inherited eye disease
NIH-supported findings pave the way for genetic testing, clinical trials, and therapy development.
September 26, 2024- Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and their colleagues have identified a gene responsible for some inherited retinal diseases (IRDs), which are a group of disorders that damage the eye’s light-sensing retina and threatens vision. Though IRDs affect more than 2 million people worldwide, each individual disease is rare, complicating efforts to identify enough people to study and conduct clinical trials to develop treatment. The study’s findings published today in JAMA Ophthalmology.
In a small study of six unrelated participants, researchers linked the gene UBAP1L to different forms of retinal dystrophies, with issues affecting the macula, the part of the eye used for central vision such as for reading (maculopathy), issues affecting the cone cells that enable color vision (cone dystrophy) or a disorder that also affects the rod cells that enable night vision (cone-rod dystrophy). The patients had symptoms of retinal dystrophy starting in early adulthood, progressing to severe vision loss by late adulthood.
