SHORING UP BLOOD VESSELS MAY OFFER NEW APPROACH FOR TREATING AUTOIMMUNE RHEUMATIC DISEASES
June 13, 2024 – A study from physician-scientists at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) points to a potential novel approach for treating autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis — preventing antibodies and immune cells from leaving the bloodstream and entering joints and other organs where they cause inflammation and injury. The findings were published on June 10th in The Journal of Clinical Investigation Insight.
Current treatments for autoimmune diseases focus on suppressing the parts of the immune system that trigger inflammation and cause disease symptoms. But the immune-suppressing activity of these drugs also leads to side effects, including an increased susceptibility to infections. New therapies are needed that are anti-inflammatory without being immunosuppressive. The new study suggests that if immune cells and autoantibodies can be kept within the bloodstream, inflammatory damage is prevented.

CMS PREPARING TO CLOSE PROGRAM THAT ADDRESSED MEDICARE FUNDING ISSUES RESULTING FROM CHANGE HEALTHCARE CYBER-ATTACK
Change Healthcare/Optum Payment Disruption (CHOPD) Program Provided Funding Lifeline to Medicare Providers and Suppliers
June 17, 2024- Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that payments under the Accelerated and Advance Payment (AAP) Program for the Change Healthcare/Optum Payment Disruption (CHOPD) will conclude on July 12, 2024. Launched in early March, the CHOPD payments were designed to ease cash flow disruptions experienced by some Medicare providers and suppliers, such as hospitals, physicians, and pharmacists, due to the unprecedented cyberattack that took health care electronic data interchange Change Healthcare offline in February.
“In the face of one of the most widespread cyberattacks on the U.S. health care industry, CMS promptly took action to get providers and suppliers access to the funds they needed to continue providing patients with vital care,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure. “Our efforts helped minimize the disruptive fallout from this incident, and we will remain vigilant to be ready to address future events.”

NIH-FUNDED INTERVENTION DID NOT IMPACT OPIOID-RELATED OVERDOSE DEATH RATES OVER EVALUATION PERIOD
June 16, 2024 – A data-driven intervention that engaged communities to rapidly deploy evidence-based practices to reduce opioid-related overdose deaths – such as increasing naloxone distribution and enhancing access to medication for opioid use disorder – did not result in a statistically significant reduction in opioid-related overdose death rates during the evaluation period, according to results(link is external) from the National Institutes of Health’s HEALing (Helping to End Addiction Long-Term) Communities Study. Researchers identified the COVID-19 pandemic and increased prevalence of fentanyl in the illicit drug market – including in mixtures with cocaine and methamphetamine – as factors that likely weakened the impact of the intervention on reducing opioid-related overdose deaths.

CHRONIC HYPERTENSION IN PREGNANCY DOUBLED IN THE U.S. FROM 2007-2021
NIH-funded study shows treatment of condition fell short; suggests need for improved strategies.
June 17, 2024 – The prevalence of chronic hypertension in pregnancy in the United States doubled from 2007-2021, but only about 60% of those with the potentially life-threatening condition were treated with antihypertensive medications, according to a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported study of nearly 2 million pregnancies. The study, which was funded by NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), did not explore the reasons for the increase, but rising maternal age, growing obesity rates, and other factors likely played a role, according to researchers. The findings were published today in the journal Hypertension.
