November 25, 2025- Earlier this month, Nicklaus Children’s Helen & Jacob Shaham Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute received a $7.5 million budget appropriation to advance pediatric cancer research and care. Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis announced the award under the newly created Cancer Connect Collaborative Research Incubator Fund (Incubator).

Nicklaus Children’s is South Florida’s leader in diagnosing and treating pediatric cancer. The hospital engages in more than 40 clinical studies related to cancer treatments and has been recognized as a full member of the prestigious Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a nationally funded consortium of pioneering physicians and institutions.

VITAS® Healthcare Video Honors Caregiver’s Journey and the Power of Hospice at Home

Stacy Noland reveals how VITAS brought comfort and dignity during her mother’s final days.

Nov. 25, 2025 — A new video released by VITAS Healthcare during National Care at Home Month spotlights the hospice story of Stacy Noland and her mother, Sonia Lindo, whose final chapter was marked by compassion and dignity. The expert end-of-life care they received allowed Noland to focus on what mattered most: being a daughter.

Lindo, a Jamaican-born cardiac nurse of 30 years saved countless lives before facing her own terminal diagnosis. “When my mother got sick, it stunned me,” Noland said. “She was strong, healthy and dedicated to her patients. For her to just get cancer, it was devastating, to say the least.”

As Lindo’s sole caregiver, Noland faced overwhelming strain until a hospital physician suggested hospice care. The arrival of the VITAS care team transformed their experience. “It gave me time to be with my mother. I felt closest to her during that time,” she recalled.

Through hospice care at home, Lindo received comfort and dignity surrounded by the same compassion she had shown others throughout her career. “The comforting part about the hospice care was the nurses that they sent,” said Noland. “Once VITAS sent Miss Jennifer, it just made it that much less of a burden for me because I felt so comfortable with her right away.”

Community Invited to Learn About Advancements in Lung Cancer Screening, Early Detection at Holy Cross Health

November 25, 2025 – Holy Cross Health invites community members to attend a free Lung Cancer Awareness Day event on Thursday, December 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby of Holy Cross Health, 4725 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale.

Representatives from Intuitive will share educational information about the Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy and low-dose CT, the only screening test proven to reduce the number of deaths from lung cancer by identifying lung cancer at an early stage when it can be cured.

The Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy uses low-dose CT technology to take many pictures of the inside of a patient’s chest and lungs from different angles and at much lower levels of radiation than standard doses of CT, making this diagnostic test a good choice for those at risk to identify lung cancer before symptoms appear and at an early stage when it can be cured.

Another critical reason to prevent and control diabetes: It is a top cause of chronic kidney disease

November 24, 2025 –  — Diabetes affects how the body uses glucose, also known as blood sugar. It can mean that there is too much sugar in the blood. This can harm people in several ways. One serious complication is chronic kidney disease. Ivan Porter II, M.D., a nephrologist at Mayo Clinic in Florida, explains the connection between diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

Up to 40% of people with diabetes develop chronic kidney disease, also called chronic kidney failure, global statistics show. Their kidneys cannot effectively do their most important job, which is regulating the composition of the blood by filtering out waste and maintaining the balance and amount of salt and water in the body.

AMA statement on CDC changes to website on autism and vaccines

“Despite recent changes to the CDC website, an abundance of evidence from decades of scientific studies shows no link between vaccines and autism. Extensive and rigorous studies consistently show that vaccines are safe and effective at protecting against serious illness. Vaccination is essential to protect individuals and communities from preventable diseases, making it a fundamental element of public health. The AMA is deeply concerned that perpetuating misleading claims on vaccines will lead to further confusion, distrust, and ultimately, dangerous consequences for individuals and public health.”

AMA adopts new public health policies to improve health of nation

November 18, 2025 – The American Medical Association (AMA) gathered physician and medical student leaders from all corners of medicine at its Interim Meeting of the House of Delegates to shape guiding policies on emerging health care topics.

The new policies adopted on the final day of voting at the AMA Interim Meeting include advocating for funding to support school-based mental health, removing barriers to improve access to opioid use disorder medications, improving health care for veterans, and protecting health care professionals from ionizing radiation.

Mental health infrastructure in the school system

With school-based mental health grants being discontinued, the AMA House of Delegates called for sustained and stable funding to prevent disruptions in student care.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Education Department announced it would not continue funding many of the mental health grants beyond the current budget period, effectively rescinding the future funding for about $1 billion worth of awards. The grants were intended for training and placing school-based mental health professionals in K–12 settings.
