Miami Transplant Institute Becomes First Center in the United States to Use New Lung Preservation System

On June 5, 2025, Miami Transplant Institute (MTI) became the first center in the United States to use the X Port Lung Preservation System by Traferox to transport donor lungs from a hospital in the northeast U.S. to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) underwent a lung transplant surgery and received the gift of life.

This newly FDA-approved organ transport unit preserves the donor lungs at 10°C for up to 12 hours, allowing transplant surgeries to happen at the optimal time of day with the goal of better outcomes for the patient and the surgical team.

“This preservation strategy allows us to keep the donor lungs preserved for longer, which allows the transplant surgery to then become a semi-elective procedure,” said Mauricio Pipkin, MD, surgical director of lung transplant at MTI, and surgical director of The Lung Center at Jackson Health System. “This allows us to go further for donor lungs, and allows us to preserve the donor lungs for a longer time, so we can get our patients transplanted quickly and efficiently.”

MEMORIAL HOSPITAL PEMBROKE INCREASES ACCESS TO MARKET-LEADING WOUND CARE WITH ADDITIONAL HYPERBARIC CHAMBER

June 6, 2025  – Memorial Hospital Pembroke, one of the region’s most comprehensive wound care facilities, has now increased the number of patients it can treat with the addition of a new monoplace hyperbaric chamber. The equipment will provide access for an estimated five more patients each day, all of whom spend at least two hours each visit receiving pure oxygen to heal wounds that haven’t responded to other treatments.

Despite the complexity of some of its cases, Memorial has delivered positive results to nearly every patient treated in the first quarter of 2025, with approximately 98% of more than 200 wounds healed. The average time being treated is just over 60 days, corresponding to a typical hyperbaric protocol that delivers 40 treatments during an eight-week period. “The hyperbaric unit follows strict Medicare guidelines for the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy using evidence-based medical protocols,” said Dr. Blane Shatkin, medical director at the Memorial Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy since 1997.

The new chamber, the fourth of its kind on-site at Memorial Pembroke, will eliminate waiting and enable patients to more easily schedule visits convenient for them. The hospital invested more $130,000 on the equipment and has its own supply of oxygen to ensure no further delays.

Mayo Clinic researchers validate blood test to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease in outpatient memory clinics

June 6, 2025  — Alzheimer’s disease, marked by memory loss, trouble concentrating and thinking, and changes in personality and behavior, devastates patients, their families and loved ones. With new treatments available for people with early signs of Alzheimer’s disease, there is a growing need for accessible and cost-effective tests to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease sooner. In a new study, Mayo Clinic researchers confirmed the accuracy of an FDA-approved blood test that can be used at outpatient memory clinics to diagnose the disease in patients with a range of cognitive impairment. The findings are published in Alzheimer’s and Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Standard ways of measuring the buildup of toxic proteins in the brain that indicate Alzheimer’s disease include positron emission tomography, or PET scans, and spinal taps. But these tests can be expensive and invasive. More accessible, non-invasive and cost-effective biomarkers — measurable indicators of a disease — are needed to improve diagnoses broadly in clinical settings.

Mailed self-collection HPV tests boost cervical cancer screening rates

Real-world study found self-collection tests were effective at increasing cervical cancer screening participation in underserved U.S. populations

Women who received the self-collection kits were more than twice as likely to participate in screening compared to those who received only a telephone reminder

These results could inform cervical cancer screening health policy

June 5, 2025 – Mail-in self-collection tests for human papillomavirus (HPV) more than doubled cervical cancer screening participation among never- and under-screened U.S. women, according to a first-of-its-kind study from researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

In the real-world, randomized, PRETIS study, published today in JAMA Internal Medicine, 41% of those who received self-collection tests and a telephone reminder participated in cervical cancer screening, compared to just 17% of those who received only a telephone reminder. Adding patient navigation support to self-collection tests and the telephone reminder further increased participation rates to 47%.
