S&P GLOBAL RATINGS FOR BROWARD HEALTH UPGRADED TO POSITIVE FROM STABLE
OCTOBER 23 2023 – S&P Global Ratings revised its outlook to positive from stable and affirmed its ‘A-‘ long-term rating on Broward Health’s series 2017B revenue bonds. This upgrade comes on the heels of Moody’s upgrading Broward Health’s revenue bond rating to Baa1.
The positive outlook reflects Broward Health’s improved operating performance, driven in part by increasing demand for services and meaningful tax revenue support, coupled with some strengthening enterprise profile characteristics, including new partnerships and strategic initiatives that could allow for market share growth over time.
“This upgrade reflects our commitment to financial stability and growth, as well as our ability to navigate the ever-changing healthcare landscape,” said Shane Strum, president and CEO of Broward Health. “It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, who consistently strive to provide high-quality care to our patients.” The rating reflects S&P Global Ratings’ assessment of Broward Health’s overall strong financial profile, with improving operating income, steady growth in liquidity, and low leverage.

MEMORIAL CARDIAC AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE REUNITES PATIENTS WITH CAREGIVERS THAT SAVED THEIR LIVES
Individuals All Benefitted from an Implantable Device that Mechanically Pumped Blood When Their Own Hearts Couldn’t
HOLLYWOOD, Fla., October 23, 2023 – An event recently hosted by Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute reunited heart failure patients with the caregivers that provided life-saving treatment, all to celebrate a milestone 10 years in the making.
It was an emotional scene when the individuals, all of whom had ventricular assist devices (VAD) implanted to pump blood when their own hearts couldn’t, returned to the campus of Memorial Regional Hospital. Their presence was a tangible reminder of the impact of the 75 VADs the Memorial program has implanted since it began in 2013. For each, the device provided a necessary bridge to get them to a heart transplant or was destination therapy for those that weren’t transplant candidates.
31-year-old Jade Abbott was one of the current patients in attendance to thank, she said, the team she ‘owes her life to.’ The Riviera Beach mother of four had already survived cancer and had recently given birth to twins when, with her heart only pumping at 3% efficiency, she was admitted to Memorial Regional Hospital. After spending several weeks in a coma and too sick to even be considered for an emergency heart transplant, Abbott had a VAD implanted. The equipment kept her alive and enabled her to resume life with a grateful family while she waits for a donor heart to become available.

INTERNATIONAL CLINICAL TRIAL RESULTS IN PROMISING NEW TREATMENT OPTION FOR REFRACTORY POLYMYALGIA RHEUMATICA PATIENTS
HSS rheumatologist plays a leadership role in pivotal clinical trial
October 24, 2023 – The New England Journal of Medicine published positive results from a Phase 3 international clinical trial demonstrating the efficacy of sarilumab (Kevzara®) in adult patients with refractory polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). Robert Spiera, MD, rheumatologist and Director of the Scleroderma, Vasculitis and Myositis Center at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), served as primary investigator for the trial, which led to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of a new treatment option for patients with PMR who have difficulty tapering off steroids. Steroid related side effects are common in this group of patients and can often result in complications including osteoporosis, diabetes, myopathy, glaucoma, bruising, bleeding and sleep disturbances.
Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) among the most common inflammatory musculoskeletal diseases affecting individuals over the age of 50, causes severe pain, stiffness, fatigue, and at times low grade fever. Traditionally, treatment has relied heavily on steroids, leading to prolonged therapy and severe side effects, particularly in older patients. However, the recent trial, led by Dr. Spiera, validates the efficacy of a new treatment option for select patients suffering from the disease.

NEW STUDY FINDS NEIGHBORHOOD GREENSPACES AND INCOME LEVELS CAN AFFECT BRAIN AND HEALTH
October 25, 2023 — Lack of neighborhood greenspaces and low-income levels can increase risks for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, as well as strokes, according to a new study led by a University of Miami Miller School of Medicine researcher.
“Social determinants of health have a major impact on cognition, as well as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health,” said Lilah M. Besser, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., research assistant professor of neurology at the Miller School’s Comprehensive Center for Brain Health in Boca Raton. “Understanding these interactions is crucial in developing interventions to improve brain health in individuals living in disadvantaged neighborhoods.”
Dr. Besser was the lead author of a collaborative study, “Neighborhood Greenspace and Neighborhood Income Associated with White Matter Grade Worsening: Cardiovascular Health Study,” published on online October 25 in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring. Miller School co-authors were Joyce Jimenez Zambrano, M.D., clinical research coordinator; Simone Camacho, B.S., research associate; and James Galvin, M.D., M.P.H., professor of neurology; chief, Division of Cognitive Neurology; director, Comprehensive Center for Brain Health; and director, Lewy Body Dementia Research Center of Excellence, as well as Dr. Besser’s mentee Devi Dhanekula, a student at Florida Atlantic University.
