THERE IS STILL TIME TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE AND REDUCED-RATE MAMMOGRAMS AT MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTER THROUGH OCTOBER
In Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mount Sinai Medical Center Is Offering Free or Reduced-Rate Mammograms
What: Mount Sinai offers free and reduced-rate mammograms.
When: Through the month of October.
Who: Women, 40 years old or over.
Why: The Lila & Harold Menowitz Comprehensive Breast Center in Miami Beach has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR), because of its focus on service, technology, and expertise.
Early detection of breast cancer is key to early diagnosis and treatment. Breast cancer screenings start at age 40. Regular mammograms can detect breast cancer early, sometimes up to three years before it can be felt.
A mammogram is an X-ray image of the breast that is used to screen for and detect breast cancer. It plays a vital role in early breast cancer detection, leading to the well-being and longevity of patients. How often a woman should have a mammogram depends on her age and individual risk of breast cancer. Screening mammograms can help reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer among women ages 40 to 74, especially for those over age 50.

Are you aging well?
University of Miami experts in kinesiology, nutrition, and lifelong learning offer tips to live a long, active life.
By Barbara Gutierrezbgutierrez@miami.edu
So, you want to live to be 100 years old. Who doesn’t?
The trick is not to live longer but to do so with energy and vigor, so you can continue to do the things you enjoy.
Experts have many theories on how that can be attained. In other words, how can you age well?
Experts say that aging starts after 30 years of age when cells begin to deteriorate. Decades later, however, more evident symptoms of aging appear: gray hair, memory loss, and loss of muscle function, which can result in declines in balance, strength, and the ability to perform activities of daily living. But although some signs of aging are irreversible, regaining muscle function is possible.
Joseph F. Signorile, a professor in the University of Miami School of Education and Human Development’s Department of Kinesiology and Sport Sciences, has written “Bending the Aging Curve,” a book in which he explores how to use targeted physical training to age well.

Alzheimer’s disease may damage the brain in two phases
NIH-funded brain mapping study uncovers which cell types may be harmed first.
Alzheimer’s disease may damage the brain in two distinct phases, based on new research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) using sophisticated brain mapping tools. According to researchers who discovered this new view, the first, early phase happens slowly and silently — before people experience memory problems — harming just a few vulnerable cell types. In contrast, the second, late phase causes damage that is more widely destructive and coincides with the appearance of symptoms and the rapid accumulation of plaques, tangles, and other Alzheimer’s hallmarks.
“One of the challenges to diagnosing and treating Alzheimer’s is that much of the damage to the brain happens well before symptoms occur. The ability to detect these early changes means that, for the first time, we can see what is happening to a person’s brain during the earliest periods of the disease,” said Richard J. Hodes, M.D., director, NIH National Institute on Aging. “The results fundamentally alter scientists’ understanding of how Alzheimer’s harms the brain and will guide the development of new treatments for this devastating disorder.”
